If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
I just watched his fight with Trinidad again, and if he tries to fight Calzaghe, expecting to fight at that pace he is dead. Calzaghe will use intelligent pressure like he did against Hopkins, but unlike Bernard, Roy doesn't move anymore, and his defensive style of the ropes isn't cagey, he just covers up, and Calzaghe doesn't get tired, so unless he uses more footwork than I've seen from him in over 6 years, or he decides to actually put some leverage behind his punches like he used to, then he might as well not even go to New York becuase he will make Joe look a lot better than he is, and he will make himself look like a fool.
-
Re: If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
This is why I've been saying all along I think Roy's chances of winning are very slim.
He just backs up to the ropes and covers up. Can you think of a worse guy to do that against than Calzaghe? Joe will just unload those fast combos all night while Roy covers up against the ropes. He might not even land clearly all that much but he'll certainly win the rounds unless Roy either finds a way to hurt him or turns back the clock and discovers the legs to box and move for 12 rounds. I obviously don't see that happening.

Re: If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
Jones is going to back into the ropes like always. And just cover up. And Calzaghe will just keep punching him. Jones will than realize this muthafukka ain't really punching me. Hes just slapping me. And it doesn't hurt. Jones will proceed to open up and knock Calzaghe out. Pretty simple fight

Just like Hopkins, Kessler, Lacy... :)

Although I would say its that elementery, I would have to agree you got the right Idea.. I give Jones the edge in Hanspeed as well as Sharp accurate punching not fast openhanded blows like Calzaghe uses more often than not... Joe got raked quite a few times by Hopkins right hands, if Roy landed those same punches Calzaghe would have been counting light bulbs

Totally agree. Joe should have demanded the fight be at smw because he just looked awful at LH against a 43 year old man. Also Jones as we know has struggled for a long time to make weights below LH and struggled with that for a few fights after his stint at heavy weight but seems very comfortable back there now. ROY WILL WIN THIS FIGHT!!!!!!!

So what your trying to say is he didn't use good footwork against Woods and Ruiz???????
Some of his best ever footwork was in these fights and both were in the last 6 years.
Also I'm expecting a different fighting style to the one he used against Tito he knew he could just stand there with him and I felt that he could have landed much harder punches at any time if he needed to and have knocked him out. Instead he went in there got twelve rounds under his belt and went looking for Calzaghe. Believe me Ive been following roys career for over 15 years now and he's been planning this for a long time. ROY WILL WIN THIS FIGHT!!!!!!! If he doesnt I will change my name on here to "Roy Jones is a bum" i'm that confident.

I agree as well as been at the top of the mountain and then knocked off by tarver and then kicked while he was down by Johnson and Jones has picked himself up and restablished his confidence and evolved his style to compensate for his diminished reflexes... Again Jones has been humbled and battled thru adversity, that alone gives Roy a big advantage over Joe who hasnt experienced that, and at his age its gonna be a hard lesson to learn on the job and Roy will get him in the deep waters and win a war of attriction to a 12 round win....

Re: If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
Jones to me at least hasn't been showing that kind of power lately. He still hits hard enough to get people's attention but it didn't seem to me in any of the Tarver fights, the Johnson, the Ajamu fight, or Hanshaw or Tito that he was really punching that hard. He's still fast but he doesn't seem like he's got the explosiveness he used too.
Hopkins at 175 seemed to be hitting fairly hard with his right hand, look at the Tarver fight, he stunned Tarver with it more than a few times.
Anything's possible but Calzaghe's got a good enough chin, I doubt he gets hurt that badly.
-
Re: If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
I reakon this one could be closer than most people think. Jones will be a lot more attacking against jc bcos he knows he lacks 1 punch ko power, and we all know jones is at his best when in offensive mode. If jones can muster up 60% of he used to be he will win, and dont forget joe c isnt a spring chicken himself, will be atleast 37 coming into the fight.
Its a shame they didnt fight in there primes!!

Like I posted before... I guarantee Roy will knock him down and have him on queer street... Roy will punch thru the open handed blows of Joe and will land the more meaningful shots enough to discourage Joe from his usual workrate.
Hopkins throws like 5 punches around and could have easily gotten the nod in that fight, Roy will land more and will do more damage
Joe has a great chin but Roy digs to the body with the best of them and will rake Joes ribs as well

I dont even think jc's got that good of a chin either. In the kessler fight he was clearly hurt and if kess had alittle more to him he could of finshed that fight, just depends on jones current power. I just hope jones wins bcos all jc nuts will be saying jc is the altimes greatest etc and roy's legacy would be hurt aswell which he doesnt deserve.

Oh please. Lacy was made for Calzaghe. You will never find a post of mine where I stated Lacy would beat him. Cuz one doesn't exist. Other than that I'm 1-1. I was wrong on the Kessler fight. But was right on the Hopkins fight. Hopkins beat him. If you think otherwise than your a bigger idiot than i originally thought you were. And believe me I consider you a big fukking idiot.

I feel Jones if he could would use more footwork but at this stage of his career he just can't do it.

Re: If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
Against Trinidad Roy knew what was going to happen.
Tito isn't a defensive wizard nor an evasive master. Roy iknew he'd be coming forward in straight lines; Over confidence in his power has bred this into Tito.
Roy may not have appeared fleet footed, but his little shuffling movements meant he was getting his feet into the right locations to punch accurately with force.
Roy actually boxed a lot better than people give him credit for in that fight. It may have been his physical superiority over Trinidad that allowed him to do it, but he showed sound fundamentals and calculated movement.
Watch it again. Tito moved, Roy shuffled a little with his feet....placed them and hit Tito....Tito went back came forward again and got hit.
Easy peasy.

I don't think he was even remotely worried about Trinidad being able to hurt him. That's why he did that. It was like a sparring session.
It's all about incentives. Sure he's not at his best, but when the incentive to win is as big as it is against Calzaghe, we may just see a rejuvinated Roy Jones.
Ok he may be nothing like the prime Roy Jones, but he can still make this a very interesting fight.

Re: If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
The fight would be far more appealing if there was some animosity between them.
But really it's just a nice safe fight for both.
I notice everyone picking Roy is expecting the KO. Says it all really.
If they don't coast - Jones will quit when he gets tired. ;)

When does Roy ever get tired? Calzaghe is the one who hits people once or twice then ties up for the rest of the round. Roy has always been super fit and whatever happens I can't see him tiring.

Joe will brutalize this shadow, could be a Lacy but i think Jones will get TKO`d!

Everyone gets tired. And you tire a lot faster at 39 than 29. Why do you think Roy spends so much time on the ropes?
Hopkins resorted to acting and cheating when he couldn't handle the pace.
Calzaghe sets a pace that PRIME 20+year-olds can't handle.
The more tired Roy gets the more chance of Calzaghe's punches overwhelming him. So I see Roy quitting on his stool rather than getted KO'd. ;)

I came across a bit rude there, apologies.
But looking up stats, he averaged 84 punches a round in Calzaghe vs Kess, which is alot for a SMW, especially a relatively ol done

Roy quitting on his stoll will never happen...... FACT!;D
Not to mention Joe is older than Roy (now) was by the time he slowed down for Tarver and Johnson... Joe is getting older and both know that this is time sensitive thats why this fight is in 2 months rather thatn the customary 4-6months.. Joe is getting older too... FACT!!;D

Yeah they're both old boys.
But Calzaghe has been mixing in the highest class of late whereas Jones has been in exhibition matches.
Joe will have to have drastically "gone" overnight for Roy to have any chance other than a "lucky" KO.. otherwise he will simply overwhelm Roy with his superior output.
I'd rather see Roy QUIT on his stool than Calzaghe punch him silly. ;)
-
Re: If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
Love Roy but he is a shadow of his former self...The only way Roy Jones wins if he catches Joe C. early or Joe fights at Roy's pace which I can't see happening...What I do see is Calzaghe pressing and exhausting Roy with Joe C winning by late round stoppage...the pace will be too much for Roy, sorry....
-
Re: If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
One thing I'd like to point out.
Joe is a reactive counter puncher.
He lets the oppoent lead and then he reacts and overwhelms them, but seldom can he be called the aggressor.
Thats why the fight with Hopkins looked so awkward. Hopkins wouldn't lead, forcing Joe to come forward and creating an ugly fight.
-
Re: If Roy doesn't use more footwork, he might as well not show up
I disagree. roy is the faster and stronger guy imo at this weight and should be backing Joe up. Roy fought a smart fight vs trinidad by keeping a tight desence and allowing Tito to touch his forearms and gloves, getting him in range to throw his own punches while pressing foward. Calzaghe tends to lean in and roy will have even more sucess with his right hand cause he tends to folllow up on his punches when he lands them, Hopkins throws one right hand and holds. Joe has never fought anyone like Jones even at his age, experience counts for something.
