Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
I just read this (Grand Rapids Press)
Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25KOs) frenzy has hit the sport. The rumors about the possible return of Mayweather, tentative for July 11, has caused quite a stir with boxing fans and the media. According to the story going around, Mayweather's team is talking with HBO about a possible return on the July date. The biggest obstacle, at the moment, is Mayweather's desire to fight on regular HBO, which is causing an issue because of the money required to make that possible. Mayweather is said to be asking for a sum so hefty that HBO is trying to do everything possible to keep the fight from becoming a pay-per-view event.
Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, sat down with Brian VanOchten of The Grand Rapids Press and gave his take on four possible opponents for Mayweather in 2009.
Manny Pacquiao(48-3-2, 37 KOs) - "Of course, if Manny Pacquiao would win against Hatton, I don't care who you put in front of him, big or small, he would be the pound-for-pound champion. To put him and Mayweather together, it would be for all the marbles. If you think about each one of these fights, even if you were a casual fan, you would have to get excited about them," Schaefer said.
Ricky Hatton(45-1, 32 KOs) - "If Hatton would beat Pacquiao, just imagine the huge draw of a sellout crowd at Wembley Stadium in London with 100,000 people, where Ricky Hatton would say, 'Well, last time I fought in your hometown in Las Vegas. Now, you're gonna to come to my part of the world and we're doing to do it from Wembley Stadium and that's going to be the rematch.' It would be a huge, huge, historic fight," Schaefer said.
"Sugar" Shane Mosley(46-5, 39 KOs) - "Mosley's speed could neutralize Mayweather's speed. He's a bigger and stronger guy, so Mayweather would have to utilize all of his skills in the ring. It would be interesting. It would make for a great fight," Schaefer said.
Juan Manuel Marquez(50-4-1, 37 KOs) - "Marquez just came off the biggest victory of his career by knocking out Juan Diaz. He is today the No. 1 fighter from Mexico. So, you're going to have all of Mexico standing behind Juan Manuel Marquez. He's a smaller guy, but, as he has moved up in weight, he has gotten better and better. Mayweather hasn't fought in like 16 months. Marquez is a pound-for-pound star. That would be an amazing matchup," Schaefer said
And Schaefer even gave his take on a rematch between Mayweather and De La Hoya. Ironically, Mayweather told his handlers that he was not interested in a rematch with De La Hoya.
Oscar De La Hoya(39-6, 30 KOs) - "Well, you know, maybe down the road. Sometimes, fighters take some time off to reflect and let their bodies heal and then they go for one last run. And that could be the case with Oscar, or it could not. The fact is, Floyd Mayweather, irrespective of Oscar coming back or not, clearly could be involved in several huge, huge mega events in the next couple of years," Schaefer said.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
Either one of these three boxers Manny Pacquiao,Shane Mosley or JMM would be great fights for Floyd Mayweather to take. With all do respect to Ricky, but Hatton-Mayweather 2 is :tombstone:/nono after their first bout. Oscar De La Hoya is still in question about his future(plus Mayweather's not interested as of right now)
-
Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
DLH is over, done, dusted. No need to even talk about him after the Pac debacle. Personally, I would like Floyd to fight Mosley as I think that is where the real challenge lies. Floyd would probably prefer to ignore that one though.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
If PBF plans to fight July 11, I don't think PAC will be ready by that date (unless PAC smash Hatton in 1 round on May 2)... So that eliminate PAC for the July 11 fight date...
PBF been out for 15 months so probably he plans for a tune-up fight this coming July 11... Out of the 4 mentioned names, JMM fits as a tune-up opponent since PBF is expected to win easily over JMM... PBF has all the advantages over JMM, too big and too fast for JMM to handle...
But I rather want to see PBF having a tune-up against a "southpaw" welter like maybe against Collazo or Quintana... ;) You know in preparation for a super mega huge event fight towards the end of the year...

Mosley doesn't seem too busy at the moment. It would be the ideal fight for fans, and would mean Mayweather has the opportunity to really be the man at WW. Beating Judah off of a loss and then Baldomir, doesn't quite cut it for me. :-\

I was just thinking the same thing when I heard he was coming back. As long as his hands allow him to punch then ok come back but if he cant use his fists, then what good will it do? He will be boring if he cant punch but considering that he knocked out Ricky Hatton with one punch, I think he still has enough left in hands to still fight a few more times.

Mosley said openly that he's waiting for the PAC-Hatton winner that's why he's not tied to any fight as of the moment... He's hoping to be lucky to land in a fight with these small kids... ;D
If PBF will go straight with Mosley on July 11 without any tune-up fight then well and good... but I highly doubt it...

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
floyd would not want any part of JMM even at 147 and you can hardly blame him for it.
Same deal with Cotto - Mosley fights a possibility but all logical sense would suggest if he is to make a return it`ll be against the winner of mays superfight!!
-
Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
Marquez and Hatton shouldn't be an option.
No one wants a Hatton rematch and Marquez is too small.
I would love to see a Pacquiao or Mosley fight though.
-
Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
The only fights that would be acceptable for Floyd to tke are Cotto or Mosley.
-
Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
Wouldnt be surprised to see Floyd Cotto in july... Especially if Clottey isint a done deal yet for Cotto...
A win vs Cotto and then beat Pac... would make Floyd undisputed best fighter of this generation and top 5 alltime

Im surprised Cottos name isnt on that list, lol I know he's tied down to Clottey as of right now ,but still sometime in the near future they should get it on :D

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
I think Money will face the winner of Hatton/pac first (after a possible tune up). Than Maybe Mosley or even Cotto. Those are the biggest money fights.
If Money comes back like he left I dont see him losing to any of the fighters I just mentioned.
-
Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
I would like to see PBF enter back in against Berto or Collazo at 147
THEN go for a mega-fight.

I could be wrong but i dont think we will ever see PBF in the ring with Collazo or Berto for the same reason we wont see Hopkins fight Dawson.
-
Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
Though a fight with Pacquiao would make the most money, I really want to see him up against Mosley. That would show what Floyd is made of and maybe we'd see the jab he hasn't used for so long.
-
Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
Id like to see PBF vs. Cotto then Mosley Then Pacman.
-
Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
This is with respect for all Hatton fans , but i don't know why to see Hatton again with PBF , what we can expect in Hatton in a rematch with PBF ? IMO i think we would see the same thing.............
Although PBF vs ODLH , that is another fight that i could name it as an Entertainment fight......................and of course PBF vs Pac , PBF vs Cotto , PBF vs SSM , that is a competitive fights that would be more exciting................

I think Hatton would do abit better in a rematch but Floyd is just to good for Hatton fact.
I would still be there to cheer Hatton on though if it happens after all 2 fighters are in the ring anything can happen even if it is only a very slim chance it,it still could and i would be praying it did;D

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
Does anyone have a link to a video or direct quote from PBF himself that he's coming back? Or is it still 3rd party hearsay?

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
I would love to see Hatton get a chance at Mayweather again in England. Hatton has improved and for the first 6 rounds it was an even fight before Cortez took a point away for nothing, while Mayweather was using his elbows etc. and Hatton got pissed and the last few rounds didn't go as planned. IMO, I think a rematch would be great in England and at 140 and Hatton would give Mayweather his first loss.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
I'll start by saying Mayweathers obviusly an ATG .I wouldnt want to see JMM Pac Hatton or Mosley. I think he beats all thos guys.None of em would do anything for me.
I think the man with the best chance of beating Mayweather is Cotto.
If he came back and beat cotto I would be ready to call him one of the greatest ever.
-
Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
I noticed Paul Williams is left out of the equation when possible opponents are being mentioned. I think he is one of the most avoided fighters right now. And he will be even more avoided when and if he gets by the Winkster.

Yeah Paul Williams isn't a guy that anyone would wanna fight. Tall lanky guy has power in his distance shots but if you close the distance he'll just throw 100 punches a round, with a good chin. Yeah he is pretty nice.
If he added a consistant jab he'd be unstoppable.

I wouldn't go THAT far with it, it is a stretch picking Hatton to beat Mayweather in a rematch, but it's not like it's fantasy talk. I'm not saying Hatton would knock him out in the 2nd round all I'm saying is Hatton in England at 140 has a very good chance to beat Mayweather.

And why do you think PBF would go down to 140 to fight Hatton?? Is it because Hatton honestly accepted that he's too small for 147?? ;D

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
Yet another article:For Mayweather, it's not if, but who?
"If Shane Mosley feels even slightly frustrated at the lack of response to his frequent demands for a fight with the semi-retired/pseudo-retired Floyd Mayweather, he has his own similar lack of response over the last decade to blame.
That is not to say his requests are not being heard, or that they are failing.
The telephone rang late one night a couple weeks ago, before Mayweather's sparring session in Las Vegas was reported and before the specter of his unspecified impending announcement this week was leaked. A source close to Mayweather's situation was on the other end of the line. The source virtually is without peer in accuracy, short of hearing the words come from Mayweather's own mouth, although the source's name never has appeared in any story about the erstwhile pound-for-pound king. That's how the source likes it. That's how it will remain.
"Floyd's definitely coming back. He'll fight this year," the source said.
Wow. Some news flash.
You've got do better than that.
"Floyd doesn't like it that Shane's calling him out," the source continued. "It's one thing when (Ricky) Hatton does it, or when (Manny) Pacquiao does it. But another African-American fighter calling him out is different."
Now that's something we've rarely considered.
Mayweather could make his comeback announcement this week....." click on the link to finish the complete Ring article......

I think that Floyd beats all of the above but I think Mosley poses the biggest threat of them. Shane has just come off a great win but there is not a chance in hell that Floyd would stand there and let Mosley pot shot him all night in the way Marg did. My prediction for this one would be Floyd UD.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr - Four Possible Opponents in 09
If I ranked the 5 possible opponents according to who will give PBF the toughest fight, my list would look like this:
1. Mosley
2. PAC
3. Hoya - we've seen this before and Hoya gave a split decision result
4. JMM
5. Hatton - we've seen this before and Hatton was KO'ed by the ring post
