Karl Mildenberger ~ 'I Had The Formula To Beat Cassius Clay'
Karl 'Milde' Mildenberger
~ The German Southpaw Heavyweight ~
I had the 'Formula' to beat Cassius Clay. It was straight forward pressure, and
with a steady-rate of jabs into his mid-section.
Then when he backed up, I stepped in and threw stiff left-hands into his belly.
He didn't like it down there, and that is where I targeted.
Unfortunately for me, I was not a big puncher, and my 'whiskers' were not up
to German standards that night.

"Decades from now, some obsessive geriatric will make up a quote which I never said, litter it with 'unnecessary' apostrophes and post it on a boxing forum to make some irrelevant, meaningless point" - Karl Mildenberger
-
Uh, I don't think you did have the formula. Is it locked away in a vault with Oscar's blueprint? 😄

Re: Karl Mildenberger ~ 'I Had The Formula To Beat Cassius Clay'
Karl 'Milde' Mildenberger
By September 1966, Karl Mildenberger {Age; 28 years, 10 months} had compiled an impressive record
of 49-2-3 with {17 KO's}.
Karl started off as a Professional n October 1958, 1-Month shy of 21 years-old, and as a Light-Heavyweight.
After 8-Years and 54-Bouts, Karl was ready.
Though regarded as a good boxer/puncher, the southpaw German didn't really 'pack-a-punch' worth noting.
And the 'chin' was suspect, as Karl had visited the canvas quite a few times, especially against American
Heavyweights, and average ones at that.
Still, Karl had moved up to the #1 WBA ranking, in part thanks to winning the European Heavyweight
Championship on October 17, 1964 - as well as making '3' successful Title Defenses.

Excellent Observation Triple 'B'
Cassius had a 'little dog' in old the bread-basket.
Karl bruised up his belly big-time. If Karl had a little more punch, he would
have put Cassius down a few times.

Great point Bill. Ali did take a good shot to the kidmeys though. But straight down the pipe to the ol belly he winced and didnt like it.
George Foreman: <Muhamad> 'winced' more than TEN TIMES in the 2nd round in Zaire from my straight body shots.

Re: Karl Mildenberger ~ 'I Had The Formula To Beat Cassius Clay'
September 29, 1961
Sportpalast ~ Berlin, West Germany
{NR} - Karl Mildenberger ~ 26-1-0 {13 KO's} ~ 6' 1 1/2" ~ 190 lbs.
vs.
{#29} - Young Jack Johnson ~ 25-14 -1 {12 KO's} ~ 6' 3" ~ 235 lbs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Young Jack Johnson is a 8-Year Professional from Los Angeles, California. The 33 year-old is
a big and strong Heavyweight plodder, who also is a sparring-partner for Sonny Liston.
Despite his size, Johnson is an average puncher at best, and usually wins his bouts by using
his size {not punch} to wear his opponents down.
Johnson has 'two' decent wins recently over World-Rated;
* June 7, 1961 ........ {W Maj. Dec 10} ~ {#9} - George Logan
* February 18, 1961 .{W Split Dec 10 } ~ {#27} - Willi Besmanoff
Johnson has only been stopped 'twice' in 40-Bouts, and both of those stoppages were
due to cuts. The American has a 'granite chin', and claims to have never been floored
or hurt for that matter.
Johnson has been brought over to be a 'safe' test opponent for the German, as the
Amercan is a 'slow-fisted' and heavy-legged plodder.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ German - Karl Mildenberger Defeats 'American Giant' - Young Jack Johnson ~
Young 23 1/2 year-old German Heavyweight - Kar Mildenberger scored his '1st' big win over
an Amercan Heavyweight by scoring a 10-Round Decision over veteran Young Jack Johnson.
Mildenberger {190 lbs.} was out-weighed by {+45 lbs.} to Johnson {235 lbs.}. But the
fleet-footed German used a steady flow of right-jabs and left-hand leads to the mid-section
to keep the 6' 3" Johnson at bay.
The German was in control from the outset, and easily scored on the slow-footed Johnson who
never seemed to get untracked.
The 33 year-old Johnson was an experienced fighter, but he was no match in the skill department
as the young German southpaw Heavyweight out-punched him 4-to-1.
Johnson's only success was in Rounds 7 and 9, when he was able to 'bull-rush' Mildenberger into the
Ropes, where he slugged the German with heavy right-hands to the body.
The Associated Press scored the bout { 7-2-1 } in Rounds for Karl Mildenberger.

Ernst Merck Halle ~ Hamburg, Germany
{#30} - Karl Mildenberger ~ 27-1-0 {13 KO's} ~ 191 lbs.
vs.
{#19} - Wayne Bethea ~ 27-13 -2 {12 KO's} ~ 199 lbs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
29 1/2 year-old veteran Amercan {New York} Heavyweight - Wayne Bethea is brought in to be Karl
Mildenberger's toughest test to date.
The durable American {6' 0" and 199 lbs.} is a strong-fighter, and has only been stopped 'once' in his
career, and that was to Sonny Liston {L TKO 1} back on August 6, 1958.
Wayne has scored '3' recent 'upset wins' over ;
* August 29, 1961 ........ {W Dec 10 } ~ Willie Ray Richardson
* January 17, 1971 ....... {TKO 7} ~ Dick Richardson
* December 5, 1960 ...... {W Dec 10} ~ Ernie Terrell
Wayne Bethea is currently World-Ranked as the #19 Heavyweight.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ German Mildenberger Defeats Wayne Bethea Over 10 ~
German Southpaw - Karl Mildenberger used a variety of right-jabs and 2-Punch combinations
to handily defeat veteran American Heavyweight - Wayne Bethea over 10 Rounds.
The 23 1/2 year-old Mildenberger kept his busy right-hand in the face of Bethea, who was not able
to get in close enough to deliver his heavy right-hand counters.
After a feeling out first 2-Rounds, Mildenberger picked up the pace in Round 3 and scored with
repeated right-jabs and 'right-left' combinations over the next 4-Rounds {thru Round 6}.
Bethea was able to have better luck in Rounds 7 and 8, when Mildenberger slowed down some,
as the American became more aggressive and 'tagged' the German with several good right-hand
counters.
But, the German picked up the pace in Round 9, and out-sped Bethea by landing stiff right-jabs
into the American's face and mid-section. Bethea who was now on the defensive, could only land
an occasional punch over the last 2-Rounds.
The Associated Press scored the bout { 6-2-2 } in Rounds for the ever-improving German.

vs.
{#20} - Howard 'Honey Boy' King ~ 41-19-8 {14 KO's} ~ 6' 2" ~ 200 lbs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 34 year-old veteran Heavyweight from Reno, Nevada was a tough old veteran who was
not an easy guy to fight.
King had just come off an 'upset' {W Dec 10} over European Champion - Dick Richardson
on September 5, 1961.
Howard was now World-Ranked as the #20 Heavyweight.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ Karl Mildenberger Shuts Out 'Honey Boy' King ~
Rising 24 year-old German Heavyweight - Karl Mildenberger won a 'shut-out' 10-Round
Decision over 34 year-old American Heavyweight - Howard King.
Mildenberger {189 lbs.} a fast-handed southpaw, took control from the Opening Bell,
and smacked the veteran King {200 lbs.} with right-jabs and left-crosses to the face.
The German 'staggered' the American in Round 3 with a 'right-left' to the jaw, and then
added in a barrage that had King holding on throughout the rest of the Round.
Mildenberger battered King with 'right-left' combinations from the 4th Round thru the
7th Round.
With the bout well-in-hand, Mildenberger then cruised in Rounds 8 and 9 by moving
and circling.
Mildenberger then added the final touches in Round 10, where he battering King and
had the American in desperate trouble over the last 40-Seconds of the Round.
King was out-punched in every session, and was a badly-bruised fighter at the end
of the 10-Round bout.
The Associated Press scored the bout (9-0-1} in Rounds for Karl Mildenberger.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following this win, which improved Karl Mildenberger to 29-1-0 he was slotted as the

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The German - Karl Mildenberger will be facing his 4th-Straight American Heavyweight.
Karl is listed as a {5-1} Betting-Favorite.
The 'highly-touted' Mildenberger is on the march for the European Championship, and has
his eyes on the World Championship quite possibly for 1962.
The American - Pete Rademacher {Columbus, Georgia} a 4-Year Professional, has seen his
career fall into a 'tail-spin'.
As of April 1961, Pete was ranked as the #14 Heavyweight, was on the verge of breaking into
the Top 10.
But 'back-to-back' Knockout losses sent his career on it's ass.
* April 29, 1961 ........ {L KO 5} > Doug Jones
* August 17, 1961 .... {L KO 2} > George Logan
Then, Pete was embarrassed by near 45-year-old Light-Heavyweight Champion - Archie Moore.
Pete was floored '8-Times' and stopped.
* October 23, 1961 .. {L TKO 6} > Archie Moore.
But, Pete did make a rebound, and was fairly impressive in stopping {TKO 9} tough Texan
Buddy Turman on November 30, 1961. For that bout Pete came in at a fit {199 lbs.}.
For this bout, Pete is coming in at {213 lbs.}, which is {+21 lbs.} than he was when he fought
Archie Moore only 4-Months earlier.
This bout was originally scheduled for the previous Saturday, but Pete suffered a 'wrist injury'
and required a 1-Week rest period and postponement.

~ Karl Mildenberger Scores Narrow Win Over Pete Rademacher ~
~ Mildenberger Overwhelms Rademacher ~
Germany's brightest prospect' in years Karl Mildenberger won a 10-Round Decision over veteran
American Heavyweight - Pete Rademacher last night in front of 9000 cheering German compatriots.
Heavily-Favored {5-1 Betting-Favorite} KarlMildenberger got off to a 'slow-start' early, as the
American - Pete Rademacher was aggressive right from the start, as he took the fight to Karl during
the first 2-Rounds.
Late in Round 2, Mildenberger 'cut' Rademacher around his left-eye with a 'slashing' right-hand,
but the American still charged forward with clubbing punches.
Despite the 'cut-eye', Rademacher stayed aggressive, and started to wing 'haymakers' in Rounds 3 and 4,
and kept the German on the defensive and outside.
But Mildenberger slowly progressed in Rounds 5 and 6, as he peppered Rademacher with numerous
right-jabs to the face, and counter left-hands to the mid-section.
Mildenberger stepped up his attack in Round 7, as he caught the American with 'solid' punches.
But Rademacher caught Mildenberger with a good right-hook, and opened up a cut over his 'right-eye'.
Just as it looked like Rademacher would hold his own with the fast-punching German, he was caught
by a whistling right-hook to the chin, and went down. Rademacher took a '3-Count'.
In Round 8, Mildenberger gave the American a thorough shellacking, and dropped him again with a
'pin-point' right-hook to the chin. Rademacher took an '8-Count', and barely survived the Round.
http://www.hr-online.de/servlet/de.h...0yNTQ0MDM2Mg__
In Round 9, Mildenberger poured it on, and raked over the American with 'rights-and-lefts' to the
face, and sent him reeling backwards into the Ropes several times. By winning the Round,
Mildenberger nailed the Decision.
In Round 10, Rademacher showed 'heart-and-determination', as the threw numerous right-hand
'haymakers' while looking for the one-punch knockout, as the German retreated and smartly
stayed on the outside.
The Associated Press had Karl Mildenberger winning by 3-Points.
Boxing News had Karl Mildenberger winning by {5-4-1 in Rounds}, but gave him a 2-Point edge in
Rounds 7 and 8 as a result of the Knockdowns.
The Referee {sole-scoring Offical} scored the bout for Karl Mildenberger {47-44}.

Karl Mildenberger will be the 'home-country favorite' as he challenges Welshman - Dick Richardson for the
European Championship.
Karl is currently World-Ranked as the {#9} Heavyweight. Karl is listed as a {4-1} Betting-Favorite.
Dick Richardson will be making the 3rd Title-Defese of the Champinsjip he won 2-Years earier on

Richardson, a 7 1/2 year Professional is a big-hitter with the right-hand, but he is cumbersome and rough
around the edges. Richardson is World-ranked at {#24}, and a win here will move up his World standing
significantly.
In his last bout {September 15, 1961} he lost a 10-Round Decision to veteran American - Howard 'Honey Boy'
King. The same fighter that Karl Mildenberger defeated on November 24, 1961.
Despite being the Champion, the Wales born Richardson is listed as a {4-1 Underdog}. By trade, Dick is

Mildenberger came out banging at the Opening Bell, as he attempted to surprise the Richardson with a
barrage.
The German was quick with right-jabs and left-crosses, and was displaying excellent footwork over the
first 2-Minutes, as he was in complete command during the 1st-Round.
Then Mildenberger stepped in close, and started to bang and trade with the big-hitting Welshman.
Richardson was keen to the invitation, and slammed back at the 'overly-aggressive' German. The Welshman
landed several punches on the inside shaking Mildenberger, and then caught him 'square-on-the-chin' with a
powerful right-hook, dropping him flat on his back near the Ropes.
Referee - Philippe De Backer counted out Mildenberger at 2:35 of Round 1.

The 24 1/2 year-old German was steady with right-jabs, and fast combinations as he was

Mildenberger was cautious during the first 3-Rounds, as he was measuring Friso with long
right-hands while moving side-to-side. But once he realized that Friso posed no danger,

John Robert Henry is an American {New York} Heavyweight that has been campaigning

John Robert has won all '4-Bouts' in Sweden, and is a durable fighter who has only been

This bout will be scheduled for 8-Rounds.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ German Mildenberger Impressive In Decision Over American John Henry ~
Karl Mildenberger took control from the out-set and scored an impressive 8-Round Decision
over tough American - John Henry in 8-Rounds.
The southpaw German used stinging right-jabs from the outside to neutralize the American's
big right-hand swings over the first 3-Rounds.
In Round 4, John Henry did 'tag' Mildenberger with a big right-hand to the chin that had him
wobbly for a flash, but the German held on and boxed his way put of danger.
But in Round 5, Mildenberger took it to the American, and slammed away with heavy hooks to
both the body and head. Late in the Round, the German caught John Henry with a 'jolting'
left-hook to the ribs, and dropped him for a '6-Count'.
Mildenberger then 'dropped' the American again with another left-hook near the end of the Round.
John Henry took the full '9-Count' and then went fleeing backwards until the Bell sounded
ending Round 5.
With the bout well in hand, Mildenberger sent repeated right-jabs into the John Henry, who
spent the last 3-Ronds backing away, and holding whenever Mildenberger got in too close.
The Associated Press scored the bout for Karl Mildenberger {6-1-1} in Rounds.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Karl Mildenberger will take on another 'durable' American Heavyweight who has limited power.
Alonzo Johnon {Rankin, Pennsylvania} is a small Heavyweight, but he is an aggressive and durable
boxer/counter-puncher.
Alonzo has only been stopped 'once' {by Cleveland Williams} in 32-Bouts. He also took the
'highly-touted' Cassius Clay a tough 10-Rounds, in a bout that many thought Alonzo should
have earned at least a 'Draw' in Cassius Clay's hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.
Alonzo is a certified 'trial-horse', as he has only gone 5-10-0 in last 15-Bouts. But he still has
some 'tricks' up his sleeve, as he has recently upset 'touted prospects' in;
* December 8 1961 .... {W Dec 10} > Tony Hughes
* January 16, 1962 .... {W Dec 10} > Tod Herring
The 6-Year Professional should be a 'stern test' for Karl Mildenberger, who still has to answer
questions about his 'chin'.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ German Victorious Over American - Alonzo Johnson ~
German Heavyweight - Karl Mildenberger mixed in solid jabs and quick hooks to the body to win
a solid and convincing 10-Round Decision over American journeyman Alonzo Johnson.
The German, using his southpaw-stance, scored with repeated spearing right-jabs into the Johnson's
face, as the American pressed forward over the first 6-Rounds.
Though the Amercian made-the-fight, he was unable to solve the mystery of Mildenberger's southpaw
stance and sometimes awkward attack.
The American only had good Rounds in the 3rd and 6th, when he tagged Mildenberger with solid
lead-rights to the head, and short left-hooks while inside.
Mildenberger opened up on Johnson in Rounds 7 and 8 with 'heavy' left-hooks into his body,
that had the American bending low and protecting his ribs.
With the 'bout-well-in-hand' Mildenberger scored with more solid hooks in Rounds 9 and 10, as
Johnson was now backing away and was on the complete defensive, and only looking to survive.
The Associated Press scored the bout for Karl Mildenbeger {7-2-1} in Rounds.
Following this victory, Karl Mildenberger was back in the World-Rankings at #26.

anyone a difficult time in the Ring.
Bygraves is a former British-Commonwealth Heavyweight Champion {1956/1957}.
Bygraves is coming off 'back-to-back' losses. A bad beating at the hands {LTKO 7} of former

And a one-sided Decision Loss {L Dec 10} to American - Wayne Bethea on September 22, 1962.

Both fighters banged their heads hard into each other during a 'wild' Round 2. The German
left the Round with a 'welt' on his forehead, and Bygraves was sporting a swollen left-eye lid.
In Round 3, Mildenberger again attempted to box, but Bygraves bull-rushed the German into

While inside and close, both fighters banged heads again, and each suffered damage to their

Karl Mildenberger takes on another tough American 'journeyman' Heavyweight.
Archie McBride is a solidly-built 5' 11" ~ 181 lb. small-Heavyweight. Archie has massive biceps
and is a physically strong in-fighter.
Archie is based out of Trenton, New Jersey and is managed by Author - Budd Schulberg.
Archie is a 16-year Professional who's been competing since 1946. Archie had retired in
1959, but came back in 1962.
He has had both of his bouts here in Germany, which he has won both impressively.
* September 29, 1962 ..... {W Dec 10} > Ulli Nitschke
* December 7, 1962 ........ {TKO 9} > Albert Westphal
Archie McBride >
"I won't go away as long as I win impressively, like I was in my other '2' bouts here.
I plan on pressuring 'Milde', and to back him up right outside the Ring, down the
hallway and outside the Arena."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ American McBride Holds World-Rated German Mildenberger To A Draw ~
Archie McBride, a near 34 year-old 'journeyman' Heavyweight from Trenton, New Jersey
held 'highly-regarded' German Heavyweight Karl Mildenberger to a 10-Round Draw.
The veteran, who was out-weighed by 10 lbs. and nearly 9 years older than his younger
German opponent, was the aggressor from the outset, as he continuously backed up
the German with short-and-powerful punches on the inside.
McBride was clearly the stronger fighter over the first-half of the bout, as he prevented
Mildenberger from getting off his fast-combinations.
Mildenberger was 'throttled' each time that he made a charge, and McBride was the
better man on the inside, especially in the middle-Rounds where he hurt Mildenberger
several times with heavy-hooks to the ribs.
Desperately behind after 6-Rounds, the German rallied with several flurries in the 7th
and 8th Rounds, but despite scoring, Mildenberger's punches lacked power to hurt McBride.
Both fighters traded crisp-punches over the last 2-Rounds, but neither had a clear advantage
The 'UPI' scored the bout for the American - Archie McBride {5-3-2} in Rounds
They gave Archie McBride > Rounds 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6.
Karl Mildenberger was given > Rounds 4, 7 and 8.
Rounds 9 and 10 were scored 'Even'.

~ Former Champion- Joe Louis Brought In To Help German Heavyweight - Karl Mildenberger ~
Bruno Mueller, Manager for German Heavyweight - Karl Mildenberger has brought in former Heavyweight
Champion Joe Louis to help improve the punching power of the fast-boxing German.
The 25 year-old Mildenberger has failed to score a Knockout in his last '10-Bouts', and there is concern
about his punching-power, which has slowly diminished.
Bruno Mueller {Manager} >
"I'm a bit concerned with Karl's sudden lack of power. He's hitting guys solid, but he is not hurting them,
even when catches them flush on the chin. We may have to make an adjustment with his leverage and
footwork."
"I've put a call in to former Heavyweight Champion - Joe Louis to come here to Kaiserslautern to take
a look at Karl's punching style and to offer his suggestions. I'm a bit perplexed at this stage, and we
need to get some more power in Karl's fists if he wants to progress, and move into the Top 10."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Karl takes on German Countryman, the 29 1/2 year-old Ulli Ritter.
Ulli Riitter is a 6' 0" - 204 lb. strong and durable fighter, but he is a slow-moving plodder.
The 7-Year Professional is a 'cannon-fodder', and has only won '1' of his last 18-Bouts. But, he
has only been stopped 'once' in 44-Bouts.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ Mildenberger Scores Easy Win Over Veteran Ritter ~
Highly-touted Karl Mildenberger scored an easy 10-Round Decision over veteran Ulli Ritter.
Fromt the outset, the fast-handed southpaw pressed forward, and delivered stiff right-jabs
to the face, and hard left-hooks into the body of Ulli Ritter.
Ritter took a pasting, but he still hung in there during heavy-punishment, and proved his
durability.
Despite getting beat to the punch everytime, the veteran refused to quit and would not
go down, even after getting 'badly-thrashed' over the last 3-Rounds.
The UPI scored the one-sided bout for Karl Mildenberger {9-0-1} in Rounds.
Karl Mildenberger improved his record to 35-2-1, and is now World-Ranked as the #12 Heavyweight.

Von was supposed to face {#2} World-Rated Light-Heavyweight - Gustav Scholz. But the German
fighter suffered an injury on Wednesday May 8th, and was forced to pull out.
Karl Mildenberger, who fought only 20-Days earlier was willing to fill-in as a 2-Day replacement

As for Von Clay, he's only won 2-of-8 bouts since December 1961, and he's now fallen to

~ German Boxer Defeats Clay In Berlin ~
~ German Heavy Defeats Clay ~
#21 World-Rated German Heavyweight - Karl Mildenberger forced the action from the
opening bell, as he slammed visiting American - Von Clay around the Ring throughout
most of the 10-Round bout.
Mildenberger was persistent with his right-jabs from the start, while also digging left-hooks
into the rib-cage of the American thru the first 3-Rounds.
Von Clay did make a brief-charge in Round 4, when he caught Mildenberger with several good
right-hooks to head, and opened a 'cut' over Milde's left-eye.
But Mildenberger stepped up the pace in Round 5, and continued with his '2-Fisted' barrage.
Milde then dropped Clay, when he caught the American with a 'hard-right' to the body,
and a 'straight-left' to the head.
Von Clay was up quickly, but took a '5-Count'.
Mildenberger continued with his assault in Rounds 6, 7 and 8 - as he had Clay moving backwards
and fleeing.
The German put on a spectacular-finish in Rounds 9 and 10, as he pursued the 'weary' Clay around
the Ring while slamming in right-hooks to the head.
Over the last 1:30, Mildenberger trapped Clay in a Neutral-Corner and unleashed with a vicious
barrage that had the American 'groggy'.
Clay, who was nearly out on his feet, was saved-by-the-bell ending the Bout.
The UPI scored the bout for Karl Mildenberger {8-1-1} in Rounds.

Joe Louis analysis of Karl Mildenberger
The southpaw has good technical skills. He has a very good right-jab, in that it
is accurate. But he doesn't snap it, as he tends to push it out there.
His left-hand is a mystery, as it looks like a good punch, but it has little power.
Karl doesn't get his body behind the punch. It is a long-armed punch, and there
is no 'zip' at the end of the punch.
The other thing, is that Karl squares up. It's like he isn't sure if he wants to fight
orthodox or southpaw. His feet get too close together, and when he throws a punch
it has no 'mass-force' behind it.
He must have been taught wrong early in his career, and he never re-adjusted.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the '2nd-Bout' between these two Heavyweights. Karl won a solid 10-Round Decision
over Wayne 20-Months earlier, back on November 3, 1961 in Hamburg, Germany.
Karl has now moved up to #15 World-Ranked, and a win here should move him back near
the edge of the Top 10.
The 33 year-old American - Wayne Bethea has suddenly moved into the 'spotlight' following
several upset wins.
Wayne's career appeared over in March 1962, and he retired. But he decided to give one
more try in September 1962.
That was followed with impressive performances against;
* September 22, 1962 ... {W Dec 10} .. Joe Bygraves
* March 22, 1963 ........... {KO 4} ......... Franceso De Piccoli
* April 5, 1963 .............. {Draw 10} ..... Guilio Rinaldi
* May 5, 1963 .............. {Draw 10} ..... Santo Amonti
* May 23, 1963 ............. {W Dec 8} .... Guiseppe Magliardi
Wayne's last '4-Bouts' were held in Italy, where he has been labeled as the 'Italian Slayer'.
Wayne has been asking for a Championship Bout with Champion - Sonny Liston since scoring
the upset {KO 4} over 'highly-touted' Francesco De Piccoli on March 22nd.
The word is, if Wayne can defeat Karl Mildenberger, he may just get a chance at Sonny in
September, possibly in Italy.
Wayne Bethea >
"They thought that I was a broken down 'War-Horse'. But I steam-rolled those guys in Italy. In
those '2-Bouts' that were Draws, remember they were in my opponents home-country. If those
bouts were held anywhere else on this Planet, I would have gotten the Decision easily."
"The last time I fought Mildenberger, I was just going through the motions. Now it's a different
story, because now this is an Elimination Bout with a chance to get Sonny Liston again, but this
time for a World Championship."

~ German Beats Wayne Bethea ~
German Heavyweight - Karl Mildenberger {191 lbs.} scored an impressive 10-Round Decision over
veteran American Heavyweight - Wayne Bethea.
The southpaw Mildenberger took off from the Opening-Bell, and scored with solid right-jabs,
right-hooks and left-crosses on the 33 year-old Bethea {204 lbs.}, who was unable to match
the young German's speed.
The German was more accurate and much faster than the slugging American, and controlled
the first '8-Rounds' of the fast-moving match with quickness and excellent footwork.
Hopelessly behind on Points, Bethea made a gallant charge in Round 9, when he was able to
get in close to deliver hard-punches to Mildenberger's body, to slow the fast-moving southpaw
German down.
But Bethea expounded all his energy in Round 9, and was exhausted at the Bell.
Mildenberger picked up the action in Round 10, and easily out-classed the tiring Bethea with
'crisp' right-left {one-two's} to the head and body throughout the Round.
The UPI scored the bout for Karl Mildenberger {8-1-1} in Rounds.

Karl has gone {7-0-1} in his 8-Bouts since getting {KO'd in 1} by Dick Richardson 20-Months ago,
back on February 24, 1962.
Joe Erskine is a cagey and smart '10-Year' veteran from Wales. Erskine is a former British Heavyweight

Erskine was also a World-Rated Top 10 Heavyweight for 6-Straight years in;

Erskine had retired in April 1962, after getting {TKO'd in 9} by Henry Cooper for the
British Heavyweight Championship on April 2nd.
But Erskine returned in November 1962, and has won 4-Straight' bouts to earn a #20 World Ranking.
Though Erksine is generally considered a 'tough-as-nails' fighter, all '6' of his losses have been by stoppage
{TKO'd of KO'd}.

~ German Mildenberger Scores Tight Decision Win Over Former British Champ Erskine ~
~ Ex-British Champ Erskine Loses To Mildenberger In Dortmund ~
German Karl Mildenberger fighting before a home-country crowd, rallied over the last 3-Rounds of the bout
to win a narrow 10-Round Decision over veteran Joe Erskine.
The action was heated early, and fought on relatively even grounds. Mildenberger was aggressive, as
he fired in with his right-hand, while the visiting Welshman used thudding body-punches while in close.
The best action occurred in Rounds 3, 4 and 5, as both fighter landed their best punches, rocking each other
with solid blows to both the head and body.
The veteran Erskine came on strong in Rounds 6 and 7, as he scored with good hooks and maintained a
steady-attack to the body, to gain a slight-edge in Points over the German who was forced backwards
and on the defensive.
But Mildenberger sped up the pace in Round 8 as the veteran Erskine slowed down. The German then
out-scored the short-plodding Welshman with repeated right-jabs and right-hooks, and with left-hands to
both the head and body over the last 3-Rounds.
The UPI scored the bout for Karl Mildenberger {6-4-0} in Rounds.

Karl started off an as Amateur Wrestler, where he won numerous Championships and Awards. That success
brought him to the Amateur Boxing events held in his hometown of Kaiserslautern in Rheinland-Pflaz in 1954
when he was only Age; 16
By 1956, Karl was an unbeatable boxer in the {81 kg} Light-Heavyweight Division in the Rheinland Region.
He was feared by everyone. In one Tournament, Karl knocked out 9-of-10 opponents, as only '1' boxer made
it past the 1st-Round and lasted the 3-Round distance.
In 1957, Karl fought in the Germany National Championships at Kiel on October 19, 1957 > where he made
it to the Finals, only to lose a 'close' 3-Round Decision to George Krenz.
On June 21, 1958 > Karl fulfilled his Boxing goal, and won the National Championship at Dortmund in the
{81 Kg} Light-Heavyweight Division by defeating {TKO 2} Hubert Helfer.
Immediately after that win, Managers and Advisors lined up to convince Karl {Age; 20 years, 11 months} to
turn Professional. Karl posted an amateur record of { 52-12 }.
Though he was in demand, many {Boxing Experts} thought that Karl would have a short career as a Professional,
because as though he was a hard-puncher, the southpaw-banger lacked finesse, and Karl was not that good of a
Ring-tactician.
But, Karl did turn Professional, and signed a Fight Contract' with Willi Knorzer, a Stuttgart Radio Enthusiast.
Karl Mildenberger fought under the nickname of 'Knockout Karl', and 'KO Karl'.
Karl turned Professional on October 15, 1958 > and thru 1-Year posted an undefeated record of
11-0-0 with {4 KO's}, while earning the #4 Ranking in the German Light-Heavyweight Division, while
earning a position in the National Championship Eliminator.
