Golovkin v Steve Rolls
Oh my. Saw mention of it for June 8th. Was definitely hoping for better for the big Golovkin Dazn debut. Maybe at least someone ranked in the top 12? Adams had a decent run a few years ago on the Espn Boxino tourney but it didn't end so well for him. They could be floating this low ball with intent to leverage up, let's hope.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
This is an unacceptable fight for GGG. I get he’s old and isn’t wanting to take a super tough fight, but you have to put him in there with at least a top 6-7 guy.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Who gives a fuck ? Sold his soul to the devil. Good luck to him.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
How many years do we see it before people accept it? Water is wet, it’s always been, it always will be

I will agree that GGG probably won’t go down in history as great as he should have been. I feel like he could have if at this point of his career he fought more for legacy than money. I don’t blame him, but it is what it is.
-
Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Wtf... you have to sign up for boxrec now? Never heard of Adams. It is too bad GGG basically gave up everything to chase Canelo, but I completely understand it, he wouldnt have made nearly as much money doing anything else. He will likely still just fight a few soft touches in hopes of getting a rubber match.
-
Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Three of Golovkins last four fights have been against Canelo and Jacobs. This money grabbing "ducker" narrative is silly. He specifically signed with DAZN to get a 3rd Canelo fight (plus they have the other belt holders), he's chasing his "legacy" as well as money, there's not a bigger middleweight match than those two.
-
Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Yes that came across differently than I meant it, Im not in that camp per say. My thing is GGG clearly won the first fight, then sat around waiting(through no fault of his own, and assuming you dont put much in Vanes as a late sub), and clearly showed the age in the rematch, I think theres a fair case that he did lose that. As much as Ill root for him, I think by the time a 3rd fight happens he’ll likely be well beaten by Canelo. Again, only a moron wouldnt do the same thing when you look at the money, and they were both great fights to watch. Guess I dont have much of a point at all come to think:D

36 years old, name his top 5 opponents. If he was an African American his resume would trashed for his crap opponents. A Kazak deserves equal treatment. Everyone, always, deserves equal treatment
3 decent opponents in an entire career, yeah, he’s earned more weak opponents SMDH. 2 of his 3 big opponents couldn’t win a round against a WW, a WW that started at 130.

I don't reckon he's ducked anyone, far from it. I just think he's made piss poor decisions waiting on and begging for Canelo . It's too easy to say "he couldn't have made the money he made fighting Canelo." but I see it different.
he spent so long waiting on Canelo that his career lost momentum. if he had gotten on with his own career, Canelo would've still had to resort to finding shitty catchweights and that pool was running dry , along with his credibility. if GGG continued winning, wiped out the division, gone up in weight, he could've been a big noise himself.
Instead , in the last 3 -4 years , he's fought 5 times , one of them was a defence against someone 2 weight divisions lower. in the 3-4 years before that he fought art least 10 times. I know he's getting older and won't fight as many times, but he spent too much time hanging off Canelo and GBP's Ball sack. it is what it is. He's no ducker, but he's MW ATG either. Ultimately , despite all the talk , it's your record and who you fight and who you beat and the titles you win that define your career.

Good explanation. I agree with your assessment. The issue is that GGG was on the road to ATG status until he played the game with Canelo and slowed his career. The issue is that the division started getting stacked right as the whole Canelo saga began. So instead of fighting the influx of fighters at middleweight, he chose to wait for Canelo instead.
Again, I don’t blame him at all. Most of us would have done the same thing. It’s just as fans, it would have been nice for him to fight other fighters instead.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Awesome perspectives and I'm a fan of his but can feel some faults in how Golovkin settled into being the runner up in the whole Canelo sweepstakes. Honestly though Golovkin has really been damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, he's been screwed by the judges row and he's been screwed by Canelos conduct and the process. He was blasted for taking Vanes so he could fulfill an agreement rather than just flipping the script and basically meeting Charlo as a TBA. To me that was unrealistic and Golovkin wasn't the one who screwed the fans in the first place. But then we see what Korobov could do with him. Hindsight. I'm off the road here, basically I would have loved to see GGG not so eagerly pursue a man he's already beaten twice and again leave some fans with that feeling of backseat driver and observer as Canelo gets the accolades and constantly has his little ginger pubes groomed by promotion. But alas...money. I get it. On both ends. Golovkin has seen it first hand and I like to think there is also some focus on redemption and getting the deserved nod over a tough high class rival. But I think all they're doing is timing Golovkin out and treating him like an adopted pooch. Again.
He's better than a Brandon Adams. It's almost an insult and pre set to keep him on the 'also ran' side compared to Canelo scooping up title trinkets as door prizes and is poised, with an impressive win, to eclipse anything Golovkin has done in years. He has signed a 6 fight deal so I understand there has to be some cannon fodder but assuming the golden goose that is Canelo gets to pick and choose his way why on Earth should Golovkin have to wait even 2,3,5 fights? Dazn needs to showcase Golovkin on the highest levels certainly with age a consideration. He's an equal to Canelo. They throw the casino and sho in v AJ at Wilder who couldn't box groceries and lost his last fight but more than likely Golovkin with mop the mat with Adams getting some criticism while doing so :-X and be matched with Andrade by 2020 :p. I'm all for unifications that would be fine.

I've heard this argument a million times, even before the internet was invented, every "great" fighter who dominates a division gets accused of having a "weak resume/ducking," there's always fighters "they should have fought."
Substitute Golovkin for Hagler, Calzaghe, Hopkins, Roy, Michalczewski, Floyd, Tyson, Naz - It has nothing to do with skin colour or nationality, even ignoring obvious prejudice and bias (hate), boxing fans have always demanded more, there's always someone new coming along.
Golovkin is simply history repeating itself.

Exactly! Which is precisely why Golovkin IS an all-time great (hall-of-fame cert). He dominated the middleweight division, spent years and years P4P rated, headlined massive shows all over the world and most importantly left his mark on the sport as a "must watch" brutal sparko machine, a "middleweight Tyson," a boxing superstar (assuming he doesn't do a Roy, of course).
Don't mean to be condescending but.... you need to remove your personal feelings to fairly assess fighters. It doesn't matter what you, me or any tiny minority think about Canelo, the fact is he's universally recognized as a boxing superstar, a multi "world" champion, a P4P standout.
It doesn't matter what anyone thinks about Charlo or Saunders or whoever you want Golovkin to fight, they are minnows compared to Canelo. Golovkin beat him TWICE - in the majority of fans eyes - and those fights will sit alongside the other great middleweight matchups when it's all said and done. And it's still his biggest fight possible.
-
Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
This is true really. The Charlos were/are also 154 pounders, Jermall couldve lost his last fight and first at 160, Jermell did lose(bad decision but not a robbery imo) his last at 154 against a guy who had been well beaten there prior. Who else was GGG to have fought? Theres Saunders as you say, who has shot himself in the foot and done little to make himself a standout. andrade is there now, fuck knows what hes been doing. Canelo and Jacobs are clearly the best guys he couldve fought.

you say I need to remove my personal feelings, then you go on to say Golovkin BEAT Canelo TWICE. well , to prove my personal feelings don't get in the way and indeed to prove our agreed perception on legacy, I would say that Canelo is more of an ATG than GGG in the division, because he beat him and drew with him.
Hagler , Obviously was ahead of GGG for all the reasons we gave, SRL could even be classed above GGG at MW , because he beat Hagler. SRR also naturally is ranked above GGG and all other MW's and indeed fighters IMO. RJJ is ahead of GGG, as is Carlos Monzon. Bernard Hopkins made so many more defences that he is ahead of GGG. Sergio Martinez dominated the division as much as GGG and was higher ranked P4P than GGG.
so with all these guys ahead of GGG, how is he an ATG? aren't we diluting All time great a little if every fucker is an ATG?
-
Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Ive never heard anyone make a case that GGG didnt win the first fight. Hopkins would be ahead due to the defences for sure, but the opposition he beat wasnt much, if any, better. If he gets credit for longevity then GGG should too, right? I still havent bothered to sign up for boxrec so im going off memory, but what actual mws did Martinez fight? Only Pavlik comes to mind. Your argument becomes, if a handful of undisputed Legends are ATGs, it dillutes it to put anyone else there:confused:

GGG’s longevity is nothing compared to Hopkins’.
But GGG will go down as a HOFer for sure. He will be a top 10 middleweight of all time possibly (depending how you judge it with old timers). It depends how you define ATG. I think he will be remembered on the level of someone like Cotto. Really good fighter and a for sure HOFer, but not that elite HOFer.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
I didnt say it was; but RJJ, martinez and SRL literally only had one significant fight or two at mw and he puts them above, I was just wondering what the criteria is. Agree with the rest.

Leonard was never a great middleweight and should never be rated at that weight.
Roy Jones was not there long enough either.
Both great fighters and p4p ATG.
I think Golovkin has achieved more than Sergio Martinez at the weight as well.
So overall I agree with you.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
I never said GGG isn’t a future HoF er. Of course he is. My point was , what is the criteria for ATG? Top 3 in the div, top 5, top 10?
As far as I’m concerned, it’s top 2 or 3 that can be called ATG. And GGG isn’t top 5 IMO.
And the reason I made the point was if he had made different decisions and left Catchweight king Canelo to drown in his own piss, he may well have been a MW ATG.
But hey, he’s made money , and that’s fine. But if you sell your soul to the devil , don’t fucking whinge when it all goes pear.

Thats all fine, but he isnt the one whinging is he? Realistically there were only a few guys he might have fought instead of Canelo, and none of them brought any more legacy points, not to mention nearly the money. Hes been fighting his whole life, came around in a fairly weak era for MWs and doesnt have much time left, hes doing the same thing anyone would do. Plus, if he gets a 3rd fight with Canelo and wins, wouldnt that give him and everyone else more satisfaction than anything else?
-
Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
I think most people’s problem is that he already beat Canelo twice. The first fight he pretty clearly won and took a rematch with Canelo instead of with Jacobs who he had a much closer fight with. And Jacobs won in many people’s eyes. Then Canelo got caught cheating and GGG waited around again for him instead of moving on. Now he wants to fight him a third time even though most people thought he won both fights. His legacy is already that he bested Canelo twice. It would have been better for his legacy to beat Andrade, Charlo and Saunders instead of having to beat Canelo three times.

I didnt have a problem with the second fight going either way. I agree he should have rematched Jacobs, but lets not forget he and Canelo are fighting soon. If Jacobs wins that and GGG still fought Canelo a third time, then thats obviously going to look real bad. Like it or not, fans tend to remember the official decision regardless of what happened in the ring. He has a win over Jacobs and not Canelo, on paper. Why would a win over Andrade have been a big deal? That guy might retire or lose with his best result being a close decision over Vanes at this point. I dont think the Charlos or Saunders beat Canelo today to be honest, granted those would be good wins as well though.

He did plenty of whinging after the first fight, he then saw Canelo fail a drug test , and He STILL fucking waited on him.
Canelo came into the fights with no titles at MW and had been losing credibility with his catchweights and what most people saw as avoidance of GGG.
GGG gave Canelo a way in. And as for the “winning twice” mandate , which I don’t really go along with if I’m honest, what is it they say? “Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.”
He knows he ain’t getting a decision, the same way Jacobs didn’t get the decision against GGG.
And do you know what? In a few weeks, this forum will be full of people posting that Jacobs got robbed on the cards. And they’ll probably be right, but it won’t change anything. And I will probably be one of them.
-
Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Well he had a right to complain didnt he? I think Canelo will beat Jacobs fair and square, but if its at all close of course I agree hes likely to have the judges in his corner as usual. Just realize GGG could have fought literally 4 or 5 times against all the other top challengers and not made as much money as he did for the rematch with Canelo. Like it or not, he made the best choice for himself and his family. To boot, is GGG vs the winner of Canelo-Jacobs not still the best fight at 160?
-
Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
A lot of blah, but I think the most obvious and pertinent thing to say is that this is a naff fight and that GGG appears to be coasting having taken so much time off. I think he won both times against Canelo, so I do not not why he fights unknowns, people on long lay offs, or people way out of their weight class. Big fights at the tail end of a career otherwise people will lose interest and your reputation will be hurt.

As we talked about in another thread, saying that so and so would beat so and so doesn’t make it so. That’s why fights are made against top fighters. You could say that GGG and Canelo beat Andrade, but Andrade is a solid fighter that could shock either one of them. That’s why I give more credit to beating a plethora of good fighters than beating a great fighter multiple times. Stylistically it’s harder

Maybe I sm rather austerity minded, but I like to think several million invested and self growth beyond boxing is more than enough security for a family. When it comes to kids they should make it on their own terms rather than waiting for an inheritance. In the words of the immortal bard himself "What makes a legend most"?

Rather austerity minded isnt exactly the first description that springs to mind:p forget his family then. He might rather make 20 million than five or six for whatever reason he pleases.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Hold up, @primo, who is "we?" I didn't see anyone arguing about Golovkin's ATG status, I saw you claim he isn't (Powerpuncher changed his mind and Ron is Ron) . You didn't give any reason why Hagler, Hopkins or anyone else rank above him, and now you're basically naming famous fighters and assuming they rank above, all the while only showing your own bias (personal opinion) and making my point (don't get hung up on this, it's not criticism).
Do you know who Hagler and Hopkins most famous fights were against? BOTH these all-time greats were considered "average" champions until facing famous welterweights at the end of their middleweight reigns. They both started underdog against welterweights!!! Hagler - 50 fights into his career - was the underdog against Alan Minter!!!
My whole point is - Individual fans don't get to decide who the greats are, the popular concenus decides. In 20 years the MAJORITY of fans and history books will do exactly what you've just done, list a bunch of famous fighters who shone brightly during their ERA, it won't matter that Golovkin defended his title against Vanes Martirosyan and Matt Macklin, just as it doesn't matter now that Hopkins defended against Robert Allen (50 times) and Carl Daniels, all that matters is they were long standing champions.
Golovkin's legacy isn't harmed by the controversial loss to Canelo, just as Hagler's controversial loss to Leonard doesn't harm him, it enhances the mystique (and GGG still has time to right it).
As for all-time great lists? I have history books of the HUNDRED greatest fighters of all time. Shit... back in the day old Britkid used to do his HUNDRED ATG middleweights every bank holiday on here :D

Exactly, it's not just the most lucrative it's the biggest and best defining fight in the division. If you polled the general public, Golovkin vs Canelo-Jacobs winner would win by a landslide.
Some people confuse personal preference with wider opinion.
Instead of blaming Golovkin and Canelo the finger should be pointed at Charlo and Saunders and Andrade and the like. If they fought each other the public profile of the victor would rise, which inturn would greatly enhance their chance of landing the jackpot fight.

Golovkin's legacy isn't harmed by the controversial loss to Canelo, just as Hagler's controversial loss to Leonard doesn't harm him, it enhances the mystique (and GGG still has time to right it).
As for all-time great lists? I have history books of the
HUNDRED greatest fighters of all time. Shit... back in the day old Britkid used to do his HUNDRED ATG middleweights every bank holiday on here :D

where have I said “we” if I did , it’s probably user error or I’ve lost track. I’m giving MY opinion.

how far down does ATG go? Are you telling me you rank Hagler and Hopkins below GGG in ATG status? As for my own bias (personal opinion) , of course it is. Isn’t that what a forum is about ?? Not hung up.👍

The fact that Hagler was underdog and BATTERED Minter, (who I was supporting btw, and was gutted because my Mate went and I had to work!) puts Hagler even higher . When has GGG Done that?
(I have to say it also shows a long standing ignorance by British Sports fans in general, who show no respect of talent to people outside the UK . Anybody that is World level at any sport from the U.K. is “the best in the World!) don’t believe me? Johnny Nelson reckons Khan will beat Crawford ffs. Just one example.

I saw a similar sound bite to this the other week. Please , please, let’s not put Canelo & SRL in the same bracket.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Wow I didn't think GGG would get this much flak over the Brandon Adams fight. Three pages and no end in sight. ;D
Personally, I've always been a Golovkin fan. Humble... comes to fight... and always entertains fans who want to see action fights. I, as well as 99% of the boxing world, thought GGG won BOTH Canelo fights but... what can you do against the GBP Vegas Mafia. :dontknow: Can Golovkin be blamed for fighting Canelo once and waiting on him for the 2nd fight? I don't know but I'm not him, so I guess I'll just leave it as "it's a personal choice." All I know is GGG has never ducked anyone (to my knowledge) and just loves to fight. Maybe that 2nd Canelo fight was a product of his frustration at having the 1st fight taken away from him by the corrupt judges.
Fighting Canelo a 3rd time is another story, however. That won't end well. It'll end with a Canelo knockout victory, because GGG will be that much older, while Canelo is still relatively young. Plus, Canelo has that iron chin which, along with the GBP Vegas Mafia, is what keeps him propped up in some sort of relevance at middleweight. A Canelo KO over GGG will ruin boxing for me, as it will represent the pinnacle of one of boxing's biggest and best orchestrated hype jobs.
But I digress, as I'm prone to do when anything about Canelo comes up. Hey.... I don't like GGG-Adams either. Just like I don't like Fury-Schwartz. But that's what we're getting. We are made to wait for the big ones. Only in GGG's case, I'm not looking forward to a 3rd installment of the Canelo-GGG Show. I already know the ending, and it's cringe-worthy.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
When you think about it Golovkin v Brandon Adams fights the winner of Canelo v Jacobs it is a very good move from GGG.
A few years ago GGG beat Jacobs and went on to fight Canelo. Now the tables have turned.

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
After all this, it looks like Adams is fighting Charlo! ;D;D;D

Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
Now it's Hassan N'Dam for Golovkin.
https://www.boxingnews24.com/2019/04...s-hassan-ndam/
Critics will say N'Dam is another deplorable opponent. ;D
But one thing's for certain........... Adams ducked Golovkin to get to Charlo. ;D
-
Re: Golovkin v Brandon Adams ?
N’Dam isn’t much better. Either way, I don’t have much interest in a fight against a non top guy. When you are at the status of GGG, I expect you to be fighting top guys on the regular. Guys like Charlo get a pass because they can’t just pick their opponents. They get avoided and take what they can get. So GGG and Canelo are both in the same boat to where they are held to a higher standard because they can choose whoever they want to fight. If they don’t fight a certain fighter, it is most likely a duck.

No, GGG had Charlo to fight as mandatory for over a year, didn’t. He had an owed Jacobs rematch, didn’t. He had that whack job Saunders to be undisputed, didn’t. He had his mandatory against Derevyanchenko but instead got stripped to fight yet another never champion 154lber. Should we count all those he fought? If he actually fought the MWs he would be good. But he looked above and below for easy pickings. Or do you deny he looked to go up as far back as Steiglitz? Then was focused on the division, but fought Ouma, Fuchigami, Proksa, Rosado, Ishida? Not sure how these 154lbers helped him clear out 160. But he couldn’t get a shot from the big names right? Except this leads into Ward wanting to fight him and GGG couldn’t because of 100 different excuses including wanting to clean out 160 which ^, but also, remember Chavez, he was at 168 and GGG was willing to go up, remember Froch, he was willing to go up if Froch would come out of retirement. But he’s focused on cleaning out 160, except for if you look at what he did or what he was willing to do. But here you are, GGGs just a victim of circumstances haha, so predictable. Yep, he’s just like Hagler. Hagler had a ton of fights available to him but didn’t. Since it’s the same to you, how about you name the great MW fights Hagler didn’t accept.
I expect you to switch your argument and not name, prove me wrong.
