Thanks is present tense, while Thanked is past tense.
If I'm giving you "thanks" I'm doing it in the present tense. After I click the button, I have already given it to you so it becomes past tense, hence the usage of "thanked".

Rees was outclassed but considering Kotelniks amateur background, size and skills, Rees did better than I thought he would. In all honesty he is very lucky he was champion at all and I doubt he will be again, but he is a tough fighter with a lot of heart and determination so I wish him well. Kotelnik on the other hand has good skills but I dont see him being a major player in the future, though he may make a sucessful defence or two.
