A crashing left and right dumped Moore to the floor. He struggled around on one knee trying to rise immediately and Charles then applied the finisher, another right. Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
I didn't realize Merchant was over 70 when he threw that right hand at that guy- that was a pretty good punch. I saw Zaragoza win a world title in his second fight with Cermeno, I think it was.
Arroyo put in a lot of effort and patience setting up the right hand that started the end for Alli.
Palomino dropped that split to benitez, and he lost to Duran. His only other two losses were to Andy price, who had been a top amateur and was a solid pro, early in his career; and he lost to Wilfredo Rivera when he was 49. Top quality fighter.

Man he was a bad ass. That final fight with him and Pep must have been something. All three on the canvas at times and Miller leaving the ring to pull them apart. Nat Fleischer in The Ring, December 1951, page 3, this was an extremely dirty fight, with "wrestling, heeling, eye gouging, tripping, thumbing- in fact every dirty trick known to the old timers.." Referee Ray Miller "let the bout get out of hand..."

Thanks for that trip down memory lane. :)
Duran is an ATG, but he was always such a jerk.
Only his devastating KO loss to Hearns later on seemed to humanize him a little bit.

I always thought him a real dick but he was just a bad ass and it worked for years. Seemed the same guy both in and out of the ring. I enjoyed that fight immensely. He changed later as we all do with age.
It was touching that he visited Dejesus on his death bed and hugged and kissed him when he was dieing of Aids. I'll never forget this photo.http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/a...pslzufwngk.jpg

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
I think Duran once said De Jesus was one of the few opponents he really respected. De Jesus dropped him a couple of times, I think, including a fight De Jesus actually won. That was extremely rare during Duran's heyday. Still... Duran's penchant for not giving his opponents their due early on was pretty grating on the nerves.

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
De Jesus was extremely fast and surprised Duran with the knock downs. Very underrated fighter.
