I hate the way the NHL is reffed. Not that the Wings didn't deserve a penalty, but the refs let so much go in the overtime it's ridiculous.
It just seems inconsistent the way it's reffed, you never know what they are going to let go or what is fair play, although the last one was an easy call to make and the right one obviously. Still, lots of tense power play time and I didn't think any of it was warranted.
I agree, it makes the league look very amateurish. I especially hate the make-up calls. If one team gets a powerplay in the 3rd period, you're almost guaranteed to see that same team get a bullshit call against them to even things up. I hate it and it needs to be addressed. There's also a completely different standard of officiating in the playoffs than there is in the regular season.
I agree it's like make up calls are an accepted part of the game and if you kill a penalty you're entitled to a shot of your own. Ridiculous absolutely ridiculous I HATE that more then anything. Make up calls suck. I'll give them credit it's a very hard game to officiate and I think the league does a good job with reviews but there has to be a set standard to how a game is called. In the NBA Stern emphasised that a game is to be called exactly as it would in the opening minutes then it would in the closing seconds and in hockey that's just not true. I don't mind it but in the Sharks - Stars 4 OT affair you had 2 calls and both were absolute must calls. They called 3 ticky tack fouls in this one with the Cup on the line, just no consistency.
It's beyond stupid, I don't know of any other league that has as many blatant make-up or even-up calls. For all his faults, Stern's got it right on this issue, the game should be officiated in the same way no matter what the clock says or what time of year it is.
Edit: Have you heard the rumor about Marleau + unnamed player being traded to Columbus for Zherdev and the 6th pick in the draft? It's nothing more than an unsubstanciated rumor, but I thought it was interesting.
Yes I had heard on the Mercury blog and at first it didn't make much sense to me because Marleau is the captain of the team and we need to bulk up on defense. But with a high pick in supposedly a pretty stacked draft the plan would be to pick a defenseman in the draft who could play right away. If that's the case then I guess it wouldn't be so bad. Zherdev is a huge question mark though, great player but it seems all I ever hear about him is off-ice stuff and how no one likes him. But of course a change of scenery could fix that.
I don't know, I would prefer they not part with Marleau but if they could pull off that deal and draft a really stellar defenseman then I could live with it.
Whoa!!! What a fucken game that was...
I can't think of another more exciting game then that one in recent times for me...
I mean the simple fact that's it's the Stanley Cup alone is crazy but add the tempo of the game the come from behind and the overtime and you've got yourself a game that a sports fan dreams of.
I am NOT the biggest hockey fan nore do I claim to even know the names of a lot of players but I enjoy a damn! good competitive game of just about anything.
What happened last night was just brilliant.
Fleury all in all had a good game the left hand/leg save he made was a fucken beauty.
My girl and I were at a friends house having dinner for his birthday and I told 'em throw on the game while we BBQ outside so he brought the tv and we watched the game. We were screaming and yelling he didn't even know who was playing or anything but like any other sports fan you know brilliance when you see it.
It truly was an amazing game. Not sure I've ever seen so many crossbars been hit in a game, and I've watched plenty. Plus the flow, Pens ahead, Det. comes back and goes ahead...Pens score with seconds left...then triple freakin overtime. Detroit I figured for sure had it when it got tied up 2-2. Then went up 3-2 and I was almost ready to shut the tv off and go to bed. I prob. shoulda cuz if fugged me out of a decent nights sleep.
There's still hope for my Pens!! :)
The Pens need to be more physical on D....there's no reason Fluery should have had to make 55 saves!
If you hit guys they won't be so happy to see the puck passed to them.
That's what I always did playing D...if you were going to score while I'm on the ice then you're going to earn it, same in lacrosse
I tried to watch game 3, just couldn't get into it.
The thing is I actually like seeing Hockey live, there was like a minor league team where I lived during high school and watching the games live was fun. Its just not a sport I like to watch on TV for some reason.
I think the NHL playoffs are by far the best playoffs in all of sports. That's saying a lot considering how great the NCAA tournament is but I think the drama of playoff hockey is unparalleled to me. It's probably only second to boxing in terms of drama.
HD is the NHL's friend....watching the Pittsburgh-Buffalo game played outside was CRAZY in HD.
ref had no choice but to call that high stick. other than that his whistle was basically in his pocket.
mick, if you want to see great goaltending, go back 10 years and search for Curtis Joseph footage when he was a Blue and an Oiler. Or when the Leafs played Carolina. The guy was almost unbeatable.
I hated the guy b/c he was the only reason the Blues would have any chance in hell of beating the Leafs. Then, in game 7, Wendel Clark rung one off his cage that spun his mask around. I remember hoping he'd be hurt.
Now he's my favorite player of all time. him and gretzky.
