Haye should forget about Vitali and either retire or fight someone else
Quote:
By Michael Collins
It’s kind of sad to see former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) still hanging around waiting and hoping that he’ll somehow get a big fight with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. It’s pretty clear that isn’t going to happen, and he’s just wasting his time talking about the fight all the time when the signs are pretty clear that there’s just no interest from Vitali’s side.
With all this wasted time by Haye, he could be fighting four times a year and making the money that he would have received in a fight with Vitali. It might take Haye two fights to get what he would have gotten in one against Vitali, but who cares?
It’s not as if Haye will need to take on anyone good in order to make good money in the UK. Haye could essentially do what UK heavyweights David Price and Tyson Fury have been doing by taking on old guys like Martin Rogan, Matt Skelton, Audley Harrison, and Vinny Maddalone , and Haye would do really well. I think it would be more admirable for Haye to stand up on his hind legs and take on Price and Fury, so he can prove that he’s the best fighter in the UK.

Jonathan Banks interview (from The Ring website):
http://ringtv.craveonline.com/blog/1...nitely-changed
Quote:
Ring: How is everything?
Johnathon Banks: I can't complain. I can not complain at all. I'm here in Detroit, and I can not complain at all.
Ring: How has life changed for you in Detroit?
JB: Well, you know, I was told by a very good friend of mine, Jameel McCline -- as a matter of fact, I just got off of the phone with him.
But we were in camp when I was training with Wladimir when I was told by Jameel McCline, you know, he said, "Listen young man, I'm going to tell you this now."
He said, "If you pull this off, meaning that if you train Wladimir, and you get him this win, and then, you go to Atlantic City, and you get yourself that win, then your life will never be the same."
He said, "I kid you not, but just be prepared for it." Then he said, "I'm looking into your eyes, and I'm seeing the intensity that you're training with, and I believe that you're going to do it."
But when he told me that my life would never be the same, it sort of went into one ear and out of the other. I just didn't think that it would be this way.
Then again, the week of the fight, he said, "Are you ready for your life to change?" I said, "Of course," but really, I didn't pay him no attention.
Ring: So was he right?
JB: Yeah, he was right. My life has definitely changed. But I had a lot of heart break as well, because I just buried an extremely close cousin of mine this past Saturday.
So there has just been a lot of heartache more so than anything, because I had to deal with Emanuel, and then, I had to deal with the fight, and then, after the fight, there was celebration.
After the celebration, I got some calls and did a lot of interviews, but I also got some calls about my cousin being killed. He was just buried this past Saturday, so it's been crazy.
Ring: What sort of demands have been made on your time?
JB: I've been doing so many different speaking engagements. I've been going to so many different juvenile homes and institutions and juvenile delinquent centers and youth homes.
I've been speaking to a lot of children. I've always done that, but now, the demand is higher and the attention rate has improved.
They're paying more attention because the majority of them have seen the fight. So since they've seen the fight, that's what I've been doing. I just did a television show yesterday.
A lot of people were shocked that I was working on Christmas day. But any message that I can get out to the children, then I'll do it.
The guy that I was on the show with, he's a local from Detroit, he said that he's never received that large of a call volume.
Ring: Will you continue to be the perceived underdog entering the rematch?
JB: I will come into this fight the same way that I did for every other fight, including the last one. My focus will be the same, and my game plan will be the same. My plan will be the same.
I'm not about to start changing anything because I have no reason to change anything right now. Just because I was the underdog before doesn't mean that I'm not the underdog now.
Ring: What do you mean?
JB: Well, there's a reason that they want this fight, and there is a reason that they want this rematch right away. They saw something that they think they can capitalize on, and all that I can say is, "Okay." You know?
So that's what they're coming to do. They're coming to try to capitalize on something that they didn't do the first time.
So a rematch is actually more dangerous than the first fight, because they fight has already happened and it's been said and done.
In the rematch, so much can be gained, and so much can be lost from the first fight when you go into the second fight. So that's what this is all about.
This is boxing. Boxing is what I do, and boxing is my life. Am I worried about the rematch? No. Was I worried about the first fight? No.
Am I confident about the rematch? Yes, just like I was confident about the first fight. I don't underestimate Seth Mitchell.
I say it once again, just like I said after the first fight, that I take my hat off to the guy. I have nothing bad to say about the guy.
He's a big guy. He's still a strong puncher. I still have to be careful. I still have to bring my best. If I don't, I'll be in trouble.

Charr targets Haye
Quote:
Charr targets Haye
Heavyweight contender Manuel Charr has targeted David Haye in order to fast track a rematch with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. “I will do whatever it takes to make this fight happen,” said Charr. “I can only hope that Vitali doesn’t retire. I heard that David Haye wants to fight him, too. Well, David, we both have the same goal – so let us find out in the ring who should have the right to challenge Klitschko. I am hereby officially challenging you for an elimination bout!”
Another chance to secure a title shot would be winning the WBC World Cup which is supposed to start in May. “The WBC is looking for eight contenders for the World Cup,” states Charr. “I am honored to be on the short list. The winner of the tournament will become the mandatory challenger for the world championship.” The only problem is the World Cup is scheduled for a whole year which means that Charr – in case he wins the tournament – would be world title challenger in 2014 when Vitali Klitschko will most probably be retired. But the “Diamond Boy” desperately wants to face Klitschko again to show the world that he can beat the best heavyweight fighter in the world. “That’s why I am calling out David Haye. I am not ducking anybody and only looking for the biggest challenge out there. David, if you’re reading this, come on and fight me! I’m ready and only waiting for you – let’s get it on!”
it would be interesting to see charr v some other good guys... he put in an interesting performance v vitali... he didnt seem to be too bad... but heavyweight conteders hardly ever fight each other so it is hard to grade them... hopefullly he gets in the ring with some o the better ones before another title fight... haye will never fight him though.

Boxing Insider Heavyweight Boxer of the Year for 2012: Kubrat Pulev
Quote:
by Johnny Walker
HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHTER OF THE YEAR: KUBRAT PULEV
“Kubrat who?,” I can hear some of you saying. Well, you won’t be saying that for much longer.
Of all the top tier heavyweights this year, it was talented Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev (17-0, 9 KOs) who made the most progression. He took out the durable Brit Michael Sprott, then faced giant Ukrainian-born German Alexander Dimitrenko for the European heavyweight title. Dimitrenko’s sole loss going into the fight was a majority decision dropped to slick American Eddie Chambers in 2009, but Pulev gave him a thorough beating, with six-foot-seven-inch tall Dimitrenko going down and counted out from a stiff Pulev jab, no less, at the end of round eleven.
Pulev then went on to humiliate another giant, the nearly six-foot-eight inch tall undefeated Russian Alexander Ustinov, giving him a convincing beating that resulted in the bloodied challenger surrendering after a quick flurry from Pulev put him down early in round eleven.
With these dominant wins over bigger men, Pulev, himself no midget at nearly six-foot-five inches tall, has thus prepared himself well for the eventual task of facing one of the world champion Klitschko brothers. Pulev’s not a showy fighter (he saves that for his life outside of the ring –he is known as a prankster and dates sexy Bulgarian pop diva Andrea), but, with his extensive amateur experience, he is as solid as they come, his greatest strength perhaps being his ability to remain patient and calm no matter what the situation is in the ring. Unlike many others who make the journey, Pulev truly looks at home when he steps into the squared circle.
Look for Kubrat Pulev to continue his rise to the top in 2013.
HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHTER OF THE YEAR, RUNNER UP: WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO
The true world champion continued to smash all comers in 2012, and Wlad would have topped this list had he been able to find some better competition.
In retrospect, the Klitschko camp’s decision to award to title shot to Jean Marc Mormeck–a former cruiserweight who had already been knocked out by David Haye and who needed a hometown gift to get by Timur Ibragimov–counted against the champion, as the resulting fight was as big a mismatch as it seemed on paper. It’s not a stretch to say that Michael Sprott would have put up much more of a fight than the Frenchman did. It strains credulity to say that Mormeck was the best optional defense the K2 camp could come up with.
Wlad then did his job in a mandated rematch against hapless American Tony Thompson, who really looked as if he wished he were eating donuts back home instead of eating punches in Switzerland. Thompson provided far less in the way of resistance than he did in 2008 during the first match between the two men, perhaps as a result of the fact that was now 40 years old instead of 36, the champion’s current age.
Today in Moscow, Oleg Maskaev stopped Owen "What the Heck" Beck by TKO 3.
http://www.boxingscene.com/oleg-mask...ov-wins--60958
Beck looked awful today, all he did was hold to survive after Maskaev knocked him down in round one.
Maskaev was badly cut over an eye by a Beck headbutt early in round 3, but then knocked Beck down twice. Although Beck was up at the count of nine after the last knockdown, he wasn't steady on his feet so the ref waved it off. Beck looked like he wanted to quit anyway.
Oleg is slow now, but it appears that he still has power.
Can't see any reason for Oleg to make a comeback. He isn't going to make any major waves at Heavyweight and is more than likely at risk of being seriously injured.

Manuel Charr reveals WBC World Cup tourney plans
World Boxing News: Charr reveals WBC World Cup tourney plans - want's Haye, Vitali first
Quote:
Heavyweight contender Manuel Charr has big goals for 2013. "I hope to get another chance to fight Vitali Klitschko for the WBC world championship," states Charr.
"I will do whatever it takes to make this fight happen. I can only hope that Vitali doesn’t retire. I heard that David Haye wants to fight him, too. Well, David, we both have the same goal – so let us find out in the ring who should have the right to challenge Klitschko. I am hereby officially challenging you for an elimination bout!“
In his first world title shot in September in Moscow Charr was stopped by a cut in the fourth round. "Vitali didn’t beat me – his doctor did it for him“, says Charr. I think David Haye said the same thing right after his fight (with Wladimir).“
'The Diamond Boy' has already checked different options to get a rematch against the older Klitschko brother. After winning the WBC Silver international championship in March, Charr added the WBC Baltic and WBC Mediterranean title to his collection of minor regional belts by knocking out tough contender Konstantin Airich in one round on December 21st.
"There are seven minor WBC belts – and I want to unify them all," says Charr. "Once I have all the 'small’ belts the only one missing will be the big green and gold title and that’s what I’m looking for.
"Another chance to secure a title shot would be winning the WBC world Cup, which is supposed to start in May. The WBC is looking for eight contenders for the World Cup and I am honoured to be on the shortlist. The winner of the tournament will become the mandatory challenger for the world championship."
The only problem is that the World Cup is scheduled for a whole year which means that Charr – in case he wins the tournament – would only be world title challenger in 2014 when Vitali Klitschko will most probably be retired. But Charr desperately wants to face Klitschko again to show the world that he can beat the best heavyweight fighter in the world.
"That’s why I am calling out David Haye," said Charr. "I am not ducking anybody and only looking for the biggest challenge out there. David, if you’re reading this, come on and fight me! I’m ready and waiting for you – let’s get it on!“

Maskaev impressive in beating Beck
Quote:
By Rob Smith:
Former WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev (37-7, 28 KO’s) didn’t look half bad in defeating Owen Beck (29-12, 20 KO’s) by a 3rd round TKO on Sunday night at the Sports Palace in Moscow, Russia. Maskaev put Beck down three times in the fight in stopping him in the 3rd round at 2:59.
Beck was knocked down once in the 1st and twice more in the 2nd round from big shots from Maskaev. The finisher came from a short right hand from Maskaev that put Beck down. To Beck’s credit, he did make it back to his feet but he was unable to stand without swaying from side to side and then caused the referee Viktor Panin to stop the fight.
Maskaev hadn’t fought since being stopped in the 1st round by Nagy Aguilera in December 2009. That’s a long time to go in between fighting for someone Maskaev’s age, but he looked good.
It’s unclear how far Maskaev can go in the division. He’ll have to be matched carefully for him to be able to get a title shot, because I have a feeling if they put Maskaev in with someone of decent quality, he’ll get stopped again. He’s really easy to hit and his lack of hand speed makes it easy for his opponents to flurry on him to get him out of there like Kirk Johnson and Aguilera did.
However, Maskaev has good enough power to rise up the rankings and get another title shot if they can match him the same way that other heavyweight contenders like Tyson Fury and Manuel Charr have been matched. Maskaev can beat the kinds of opposition that Charr, Fury and David Price have been fighting. That would be pretty easy for him because those three fighters have been matched with the utmost care in selecting for beatable opposition.

Price training hard for Thompson showdown
Price-Thompson is LIVE on Wealth TV and WealthTV.com on February 23
Famed British promoter Frank Maloney says David Price and his trainer Franny Smith are two of the best professionals he has ever worked with. The British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion faces world ranked American Tony Thompson at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on February 23rd in a 12 round international heavyweight contest that can be seen on Wealth TV and WealthTV.com.
Despite training for four twelve-round contests last year, 6ft 8in Price (15-0) took just a week off following November’s win over Matt Skelton. Maloney said, “David and Franny are a dream team and stayed in the gym over Christmas and New Year. After the Skelton fight they asked if the Thompson fight could be delayed until March to allow David a longer rest. We tried to switch the date, but the venue had no available dates and there were no complaints from them. They just said ‘okay,’ and got on with it like the true professionals that they are. Some fighters you have to be calling up and checking what they are doing, but I can rest knowing David is doing everything correct.”
Price, 29, is now ranked 9th in world by the WBC and rapidly closing in on the heavyweight divisions big guns, Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko.
Southpaw Thompson (36-3) brings a wealth of experience and has knocked out 24 of his opponents. Two of his defeats came against Wladimir Klitschko in world titles challenges. Back in July 2008 he lost in 11 rounds and earlier this year was beaten in six. Thompson is ranked 10th in the IBF world rankings.
In the chief supporting bout, another Liverpool boxer Kevin Satchell (9-0) will defend his British and Commonwealth flyweight titles against Belfast’s Luke Wilton (13-2-1).
Top British light-welterweight contender Adil Anwar (18-1) will box a ten rounder against a selected opponent.
There will be a press conference in Liverpool next week to announce other boxers on the bill including another British championship contest.
Price-Thompson can be seen on WealthTV nationally on Verizon FiOS TV channel 169 and 669 in HD, AT&T U-Verse TV channels 470 and 1470 in HD, along with over 100 cable systems across the country as well as on line viewing on numerous connected devices and via WealthTV in High Definition and 3D.
