Aren't 'classics' usually competitive?
Not always. From a British point of view it was a classic performance and in the wider international Boxing sense it was a perfectly executed example of what makes this noble art so exciting, visceral and unpredictable. Classics do not have to be perfectly matched 12 round tit for tat wars.
Some times one sided beat downs are worthy of the title.
I disagree entirely. I can't think of a single one-sided beating that I would consider a classic.
I agree with Greenbeanz. A classic can also be an underdog upsetting the odds and smashing their opponent up. Calzaghe/Lazy will always be a classic in that regard. This one should be considered one too. It was intense, exciting and had everyone on their feet. That's a classic.
I wouldn't consider Calzaghe - Lacy a classic either. I saw the fight once, I have no desire to see it again. It was a career-defining fight for Calzaghe and it was a masterful performance from an underdog, but that's all it was (to me at least).
Re: Lucian Bute vs. Carl Froch Saturday fight thread
I can write up a big post but in the end I think all it would say is that I am proud of Froch. My hats off to him.
Re: Lucian Bute vs. Carl Froch Saturday fight thread
Well Kessler was at ringside, I know they were setting up a fight with Bute :o But that would be gone now.
I would like to see Froch Vs Kessler II, but this time in England ;D, but we will see if Saurland just want´s to milk the cow, I am affaid it could be Kessler vs Brian Magee, in Denmark.
Re: Lucian Bute vs. Carl Froch Saturday fight thread
On reflection you would have to put that up there with anything Froch has ever done. He came out, didn't start slow and took it to his opponent. It was his most aggressive showing since Pascal and it's been missing at times in some fights. You sense that Froch hasn't let it all go in the ring and Kessler and Ward were those kinds of fights. I would like to see Froch against both Kessler and Ward again and with this search and destroy mindset.
He took Bute's soul today and there is no point in a rematch whatsoever. Bute was in it for all of a minute.
Calzaghe/Lacy is a classic for me and I never tire of it. This was a cracking fight too. All those that picked Bute might disagree, but I am laughing at them. Hahaha! ;D

I'd be tempted to give both round three and four as 10-8's.

Round 3 for sure. Froch dominated the fight. It was almost too easy.
Bute showed himself up in a very bad way. He was supposed to be good with all these people predicting him to win.
He was flatout Lacy'd.

good night for boxing and an amazing night for Froch
Re: Lucian Bute vs. Carl Froch Saturday fight thread
I'd like to feel vindicated about my bitching about Bute being overrated but I totally didn't see Froch's career coming. I remember thinking, before he stepped up, that he was way too open defensively to be a top fighter.
Re: Lucian Bute vs. Carl Froch Saturday fight thread
Not to piss on Froch's parade but did the foot injury hamper Bute, he was easy to hit.
