Re: Jean Pascal - Lucian Bute, fight discussion thread and picks
The French speaking part of Canada is as big on boxing as maybe anywhere else in the world. The Top Rank and GBP of Canada did a joint promotion tonight. Their main event was two guys who were imported because there are a lack of native Canadian boxers to take advantage of the Canadian market. There wasn't a single Canadian boxer on the undercard in the biggest boxing event in Canada for thirty years. This does not augur well for the future of boxing in Canada.
Re: Jean Pascal - Lucian Bute, fight discussion thread and picks
Pascal said he was being hit on purpose...its all about the rematch. Bute agrees and wants it. WTF ???
Will sell kidney for Stevenson v Kovalev. Thanks.

Montreal is the only place in Canada that gives two fucks about boxing. Montreal is a MASSIVE fight city for boxing and MMA (due to the popularity of these guys, and GSP). But yeah, seeing the supposedly two biggest Canadian stars put on a lackluster show like that doesn't bode well for boxing in canada.

How can there not be any prospects though? There's nobody they can put even in a six rounder before the main event for an easy knockout?

There were a lot of Canadian fighters on the card, they just dodn't get on the broadcast. Why would HBO want to show a 6 round blowout by an unknown Canadian fighter?
Calling Bute and Pascal "imported" makes it sound like they didn't move to Canada under their own free will. Like the Canadian government has a program to import athletes because they can't grow their own. Its one of the most senseless things I read on this site today.

Zewski and Gauthier were on the card but yeah boxing is pretty lame in this country east and west of the Quebec border.
Re: Jean Pascal - Lucian Bute, fight discussion thread and picks
I didn't even watch it.
Sounds like I didn't miss out...

Why did they move to Canada? Because they got attractive offers from Canadian boxing promoters that they considered were the best business moves they could make. Otherwise they'd be American or German or British-based fighters.
Re: Jean Pascal - Lucian Bute, fight discussion thread and picks
After the Froch fight I said Bute should fire his trainer. I still say that today. Bute has not recovered from the Froch beating. I think he's done.

They may like Canada as a place to live dumb ass.

I'm not sure why they never. Would have been nice to see Montreal native David Lemieux on the undercard. He was gonna be the next big thing in Canada until he lost to Rubio. Huge puncher, would have been a good showcase to get him back in the public eye.
Dierry Jean is fighting Lamont Peterson next week, would have been great to get that bout on the undercard. Dierry is another Haitain-Canadian with big potential.
Logan McGuinness is a decent prospect, don't know why they never got him.
Who knows

Lovely weather this time of year. You've got to plug your car engine into an electric heater when you go to the supermarket so it isn't frozen solid when you come out. Just like southern California.

Lemieux is the only guy I can name. If you lose to Rubio though you've pretty much lost to a gatekeeper. I was thinking of somebody on the way up that they could at least give an easy KO opponent to before the main event to give him some kind of buzz with fight fans on a big stage.
