I really wouldn't have expected to find much argument here either. Kind of surprising.
And I was equally surprised at the Hopkins doubters before the fight and even though I was silent on the issue, I thought Hopkins would win. I really was never sold on Tarver...ever.
You're not the only one surprised, trust me.
Well, considering that I logged off to watch both fights on sky, meant I eventually got some sleep at around 6am, and have pretty much either been unconcious or working since, so I thought that now I have found a lull, I'd throw my views on both fights into the blender, where they will get whizzed, digested into really small parts, and eventually come out as nothing resembling what I actually think.
First up was B-hop v Tarver, and to be honest, I had only seen sporadic clips of Tarver, and in most of them he looked pretty damn good. After hopkins' two previous defeats I did have some doubt that he might be too old, and that he would lose out as the fight went on and his fight dwindled, but here I am, dodging dinner as I am busy eating my words. Nonetheless, I think that Tarver just didn't turn up at all, he looked as if he'd smoked a few j's before coming into the ring, and half of him was floating outside the ring, watching himself get beaten up. Congrats to B-hop, and I hope he doesn't come out of retirement, now that he's sealed his legacy with the wonderful win over Tarver, mesmerising him, he just needs to kick back and enjoy the fruits of his labour throughout his career.
Now then, Cotto v Malignaggi. I though Mali did well early on, despite the knock down and the cut above his eye, and through bleary eyes I had it even at the halfway point. Bu as speedsters going up against classier heavier fighters will find, the gas starts to run out as the rounds go on, and as Paulie lost his speed, so he started to get hit more, and by the end then there was only going to be one winner, though Paulie showed absolute bags of heart to take it to the judges, and he should be applauded for that. However, I'm not sure who was hanging on the most, as I had to stand up for the last few rounds to stay awake!
Two good fights, a great evening of boxing, a very tiring weekend.
