~ 'Little Red' Is Down, But Not Out ~ {Part 2}

I hurt my right-hand real bad in the bout with David Kotey on November 6, 1976. It was so bad, that I
had to ice it every day for a month.

We took a few months off before I started back in training and working out at the Main Street Gym in the
middle of February 1977.

We were planning on having a 'tune-bout' in Oklahoma City for the 2nd-Week of March, and against Mexico's
Edel Borunda, the Chihuahua State > Featherweight Champion.

And then I was going to make my '1st' Title Defense on April 9th at The Forum and against #6 WBC-ranked
Ernesto Herrera, who is also the Mexican Featherweight Champion.

But my right-hand was really bothering me during the work-outs. The 'pain' was really bad. So my Manager
Howie Steindler had me see a Physician. The doctor examined me, and said that I had bone damage in my
right-hand. He then sent me to a 'bone specialist'.

We got 2nd-opinion, and it was diagnosed as 'bone chips', and the Physician said that he would have to perform
surgery.

So we 'cancelled' both the tune-up bout and Title Defense.

The damaged area was inside the joint on my right-hand {on the palm side} of my middle-finger. They had to
remove the 'bone-chips'. It was a simple surgery, but it did require an over-night stay at the Hospital.

The surgery went fine, but recovery is a different matter. They put my hand in a cast, where it stayed on for
3-Weeks.

Of course, in the meantime, we had the tragedy with my Manager {Howie Steindler}, where he was kidnapped
and murdered. I don't want to go into that, because it makes me both mad and sad.

I guess I will be 'out-of-action' for 3-Months now. I'm probably going to need a couple of 'tune-up bouts' first,
before I make my 1st Title-Defense.

This will be Danny's '1st-Bout' in 8+ Months, since winning the WBC Featherweight Championship
on November 6, 1976.

Danny has recovered from an injury and surgery to his right-hand {bone-chips}.

Jose Olivares is a 'scrappy' Featherweight from Tijuana, Mexico > who is now based in Long Beach.

Jose, a 9-Year Professional, has won '8' of his last 9-Bouts since April of 1976 {15-Months}.

Jose has fought Shig Fukuyama 'twice', scoring a {W Dec 10 and a Draw 10}. He also has a win
{W Dec10}' over tough-nosed David Sotello.

And, Jose has fought the Top-Ranked - Art Hafey 4-Times, going the full-distance each time
while putting in a 'gutsy' performance in '4' losing efforts.

~ Danny Lopez Knocks Out Jose Olivares In 2 ~

Danny 'Little Red' Lopez returned after 8+months, and scored a 'one-punch' Knockout over
veteran Mexican - Jose Olivares @ 1:42 of Round 2.

Danny got off to a slow start in the Opening Round, as Olivares carried the fight to Danny and
scored with several 'left-right' punches to the head.

The punches were not hard, but they got through Danny's porous defense. The Mexican clearly
won the 1st-Round, as Danny was laying back with a slow pace.

In Round 2, Olivares was again the aggressor and moved in close while punching away. But the
Mexican left his guard down, and 'Little Red' was waiting to strike with a counter.

Just at the mid-point in the session, Danny sent out '2' measuring left-jabs, and then came in with
a 'single' overhand-right to the jaw, and dropped the Mexican at Center-Ring.

The Referee -Frank Rustich counted out Jose Olivares who lay on the canvas for the 'full-count'.

'Little Red' will be having his 2nd 'non-title' bout in a row. Danny is still testing his repaired
right-hand {removal of bone-chips}.

Javier Altamirano is a 6-year veteran from Oaxaca, Mexico. Javier was also a 'one-time' sparring
partner for Danny back in {1975 and 1976}.

Javier is a decent boxer-puncher, who has some right-hand power. At one-time, Javier was
a highly-regarded Junior-Featherweight, as had posted a record of 27-3-0 by January 1975.

But over the past 2+ years {since March 1975} the Mexican has only gone 2-6-0 in his last
'8-Bouts', including suffering '5' Knockout losses.

~ 'Little Red' Lopez Tunes Up For Title Defense, Scores KO In 6 in Non-Title Effort In Lake Tahoe ~

Danny came out with a 'slow-and-steady' pace over the first 4-Rounds, much like a lightly-spirited
sparring-session.

The Mexican - Javier Altamirano 'boxed-and-moved' quickly, and was smart enough to not get too
close to the hard-punching Lopez, as he stayed outside and 'flung' light left-jabs and an occasional
right-hand lead while moving fast and 'clowning'.

Danny controlled the bout, but the action was light, as the Mexican would not stand and exchange
with the 'slugging' WBC Featherweight Champion in this 'non-title' bout.

But in Round 5, Danny put on the pressure and backed up the Mexican to the Ring Perimeter, where
he landed some 'sharp-flurries' to the body of Altamirano that slowed him down some. But the Mexican
was still 'tricky', and countered Danny with poking left-hands to the face.

In Round 6, Danny continued with heavy-pressure, and stalked Altamirano who was running out of
both room and steam.

Early in the Round {0:30 Mark} Danny caught his opponent with a 'jarring' right-hand to the jaw,
and then came back quickly with a 'fast' right-hand to the chin. Altamirano was 'staggered', and
wobbled around the Ring on 'shaky-legs'.

But Alatamirano recovered, and started 'clowning' by dancing with his arms down and 'flipping' out
punches as he moved away from Danny throughout the middle-session of the Round.

But by the {2:00 Mark}, Danny had moved in close, and started to work over Altamiano's body with
'thudding-blows'.

Then as the Mexican slowed down near the end of the Round, Danny came in with '2' sharp right-hands
to the head, and then finished off Altamirano with a 'crushing' left-hook to the jaw.

Javier Altamirano went down at the {2:50 Mark}, and he was counted out at the end {3:00 Mark} of
Round 6.

I have my first WBC Title-Defense set for September 13th at the Olympic Auditorium, and against
#6 WBC-ranked Jose 'The Missle' Torres.

I have a 'new' manager in Benny Giorgino. He has taken over for me, following the tragic death
{murder} of my Manager - Howie Steindler on March 9th.

I will be dedicating this fight to Howie, as he was as 'father-figure' to me. Without his help, I would
have never made it in boxing.

After I won the WBC Featherweight Championship last year {November 6, 1976}, I was supposed to
make my 1st-Defense against the former Champion - David Kotey within 90-Days in Ghana. But there
were all sorts of political problems in Ghana, and we couldn't get the problems ironed out.

He was also banged up pretty good, and they wanted a 6-Week extension so he could heal. But that
broke the contract agreement, and we were able to get out of the 'rematch clause'.

We were also talking to #2 WBC-ranked Eiio Cotena of Italy. But he got 'stopped' in his December 1976
bout while trying to 'defend'' his European Featherweight Championship. So, that ended that bout.

I got back to training and working out in mid-February. We had signed up for a 'non-title' bout in
Oklahoma City set for March 15th.

I was supposed to fight Chihuahua State Featherweight Champion - Edel Borunda. He had a record
of 31-7-0 with {11 KO's}, and had won '11-Straight' bouts. It would have been a 'good' tune-up test
for me, as he was a pretty good 24-year-old boxer.

We had also signed a contract to defend the WBC Championship on April 9th at The Forum, and against
#3 WBC-ranked Ernesto Herrera of Mexico. He was the Mexican Featherweight Champion, and he had
a record of 29-4-2 with {19 KO's}. He is young {Age; 23} and really strong. He had gone unbeaten
in '10-Bouts', and was trained by Tony Ayala Sr., as he had moved for Monterrey, Mexico to San Antonio,
Texas.

In the meantime, my Manager {Howie Steindler} was still negotiating with the Ghana Promoters to defend
against David Kotey. They were trying to squeeze in April 30th as a date, but that would have been very
difficult and nearly impossible to pull off.

Then at the same time, Promoter - Don King offered us $95,000 to defend the WBC Title against former
multiple Champion - {30 year-old} Ruben Olivares in Houston, Texas.

But, Ruben had lost his last fight {L KO 6} to Jose Cervantes in a WBC Super-Bantamweight Elimination
Bout 3-Months earlier {on November 19, 1976}.

All the other Fight Managers who's fighter's were ranked above #10 WBC-ranked Ruben Olivares 'cried foul'
to the World Boxing Council and Jose Sulaiman. Well that ended that.

Then in late-February, just as I was getting in shape, I felt some real bad pain in my right-hand. That's when
I found out that I had 'bone-chips' in the palm of my hand, and I required surgery.

Then a little over 1-Week later, my Manager {Howie Steindler} ended up getting murdered on March 9th.

In April 1977, I was offered some 'big money' to fight the winner of the Carlos Zarate vs. Alfonos Zamora
'non-title' Bantamweight bout.

They fought on April 23rd, and Fight Promoter - Don Fraser offered me $125,000 to fight the winner
{Carlos Zarate} in July 1977.

It would have been interesting, but I don't think that Carlos really wanted to take the bout. He claimed
an injury and decided to hold off on fighting me. I'm way too big for him anyway, and he knows it.

Funny thing is, they were waiting for me to defend my Title against Ernesto Herrera, but my hand had
to heal first. And wouldn't you know it, Ernesto goes out and takes a 'tune-up' bout in the meantime
while waiting for me to recover, and he loses {L Dec 10} to Edel Borunda on May 20th.

The same guy who I was going to fight in my 'tune-up' bout back on March 15th, before I found out I
had 'bone-chips' in my right-hand.

Damn, a lot of pressure for a young guy to be under.

Jose Torres is a 'young' hard right-hand punching fighter from Aranda, Mexico. Jose is an upright fighter,
and has both a 'sharp' and quick right-hand counter-punch.

Back on February 1, 1976 > Jose nearly 'upset' Alexis Arguello in a 'non-title' bout in Baja California.
In that bout, Jose came on strong at the end, and 'floored' Alexis in Round 9 and nearly stopped him.
But Alexis got up and hung on, and went on to edge Jose by a 'razor-thin' 10-Round Split-Decision.

Surprisingly, Jose is coming off a loss in his previous bout {L Dec 10} to #4 WBA Featherweight -
Francisco Toro Coronado in Nicaragua back on July 16th.

Danny Lopez is listed as a 'slight' Betting-Favorite at {5-3}.

The Fight

In Round 1, Danny came out by pressing the fight as he was the aggressor. Jose Torres smarty moved to
his left while flinging out an occasional 'up-angle' left-jab {a cross between an uppercut and jab} to keep
Danny from charging in.

But, Danny was landing the sharper puncher as backed the Challenger up over the first {1:50} of the Round.
But Jose was not affected by any blows, and remained calm.

Then Jose came back with a 'hard-flurry' at the {2:00 Mark} and the Olympic Auditorium started chanting ..
"May-Hee-Co, May-Hee-Co"

Jose then put forth with a 'solid-effort' over the last 40-Seconds, as he landed several 'jarring' left-right punches
into Danny's face to edge out the Round.

Round 1 ..... Jose Torres {10-9}

In Round 2, Danny came pressing-hard, and was more aggressive than in the Opening Round.

Jose went to backing away and circling to his left, while staying along the Ring Perimeter. Danny
fored away with good 'one-two' punches as Jose was forced along the Ropes.

Danny landed a good left-hook to the jaw at the {1:02 Mark} that rocked Jose, And Danny came
right back with a good 'left-right' to he chin that drive Jose backwards and into the left-side Ropes.

Danny continued to press and punched away as Jose circled along the Ropes.

By the {2:20 mark}, Jose had circled the Ring and was now near the back-right Ring area. Danny
came forward with a 'left-right' at the {2:30 Mark}. The Danny was 'slow' with a long-left, and
Jose came in with a fast 'right-hand counter to the jaw at the {2:34 Mark} that snapped Danny's
head and sent him to 'the canvas'.

Danny got to one-knee at the '2-Count' and rose, as Referee - Larry Rozadilla issued the 'Mandatory'
count.

Danny was 'shaken', but was clear-eyed. When action resumed at the {2:44 Mark}, Jose came in
with hard left-hook, and then caught Danny with another good right-hand.

Both fighters moved in close, and traded. Jose then caught Danny with a sharp 'right-left' to the
chin at the {2:57 Mark}.

Both moved in close until the Bell.

~ Danny Lopez Comes Off Canvas To Score 7th Round TKO ~

~ 'Little Red' In Bloody Battle, Halts Torres At The End Of 7th ~

Danny Lopez successfully defended his WBC Featherweight Championship for the '1st-Time' by scoring
a TKO as Challenger - Jose Torres could not answer the bell for Round 8.

But the bout was a 'tough-battle' as Danny was dripping blood from his mouth at the end of the 1st-Round,
after taking a series of hard-punches to the mouth from the 'sharp-hitting' Challenger over the last
40-Seconds.

And after controlling most of Round 2, Danny found himself on the canvas near the end of the Round
after taking a 'vicious' right-hand counter from Jose Torres.

But the Champion came out both fast-and-strong at the 'opening' of Round 3. Both fighters got into
a fast-exchange near the left-side Ring area as each traded. Danny then caught the Challenger with
a hard chopping right-hand to the head, and Torres was 'dropped' at only the {0:12 Mark} of the Round.

Torres was up a the '3-Count' and looked to be hurt.

Then Danny tore into the 'stunned' Challenger with a barrage that drove him into the Ropes. But by
the {1:20 Mark}, Torres had worked himself off the Ropes, and was fighting back.

Surprisingly, Torres scored with a 'big-rally' over the last 30-Seconds of the Round, as he bloodied
Danny's nose by landing several sharp-punches to the face.

Danny was equally strong in Round 4, as he 'floored' the Mexican 'twice' with jolting-blows to the head.

But Torres would not quit, and fought back by landing left-hand jabs and right-hand counters when the
Champion let his guard down.

But Danny was unrelenting with pressure, and he battered Torres 'unmercifully' in Round 7 with heavy
punches to both the head and body.

A 'weary' Jose Torres sat in his stool at the end of Round 7, and he stayed there as he could not answer
when the Bell rang for Round 8.

It goes down as TKO 7 win for the Champion - Danny Lopez.

Danny came out aggressively, and immediately started to pump in heavy 'one-two' punches to
the head.

Danny caught Jose with a 'jolting' left-hook to the chin at the {0:34 Mark}, and Jose wobbled
backwards and toward the front Ring area.

Danny then moved in, and slammed in a salvo of punches as Jose was 'pinned' on the front Ropes.

Danny then caught Jose with a '4-Punch' combination to the head that 'stunned' him. Then Danny
fired in a 'double' left-hook to the jaw, and came in with a 'sweeping' right-hand as Jose was falling
down on the 'seat-of-his-pants' at the {0:41 Mark}.

Jose was up at the '2-Count', and wobbled as he walked over to the right-side Ring area as he took
the Mandatory 8-Count from referee - Larry Rozadilla.

When the action resumed, Danny came 'blasting-forward' with fast-flurry as Jose moved to the
front Ropes.

Danny then caught Jose with a big 'sweeping' left-hook to the jaw, and Jose bent down and put
his hands on the canvas from preventing from going down at the {1:02 Mark}.

Jose took the 'Mandatory-Count', and was ready to go. Danny then moved forward, and battered
Jose along the front Ropes with vicious 'one-two' blows to the head, snapping Jose's head several times.

At the {1:43 Mark} Jose was 'badly' hurt from taking several right-hands 'flush-in-the-face'. But
10-Seconds later, Jose fought himself off the Ropes, and came back with an offensive-charge to
back Danny out to Center-Ring.

The bout then turned into a 'Rock-em Sock-em' slugfest as both fighters traded good punches on
each other over the last 40-Seconds of the Round

~ Danny Lopez Wins A Brawl ~

WBC Featherweight Champion - Danny Lopez sends Challenger - Jose Torres to the canvas early
in the 4th Round, after tagging his opponent with a '2' hard left-hooks to the jaw.

Round 5 >

Danny came out blazing and tore into Torres with a fierce 'two-fisted attack' over the first {1:00}.
But Danny started to slow down, as he was arm-weary after dishing out a non-stop barrage.

Suddenly the Challenger came alive at the {1:25 Mark}, and started dishing out a 'steady-flow' of solid
left-jabs and 'stiff' right-hands into Danny's head. Jose 'jolted' Danny several times, and wobbled him
'twice' with straight right-hands to the chin as the crowd cheered > "May-Hee-Co, May-Hee-Co".

Jose completely dominated the middle-session, as he kept Danny off-stride.

But Danny came back over the last 20-Seconds of the Round, and put forth a solid rally just before
the Bell.

It was all Danny Lopez, as he pressed aggressively and drove hard-punches into the face of Jose Torres.

Danny kept moving forward, and kept Jose on the outside and along the Ropes for nearly the entire Round,
as he drove a 'non-stop' and steady flow of 'one-two' punches into the Challenger.

Jose took a vicious pounding, but he would not quit, as he did fire back with an occasional left-jab and
counter-right to the head.

check out on the fighter, while discussing his condition with the cornermen.

Round 7 >

Danny came out with another aggressive attack, and he hammered away at Jose Torres who was on the
complete defensive. Danny battered Jose with a series of solid '2-Punch' and '3-Punch' combinations
while keeping the 'courageous' Challenger on the Ropes.

Depsite the beating, Torres did fight back with brief spurts. But he was completely over-matched, and
could no longer back up Danny or get any distance.

At the {2:10 Mark}, the Bell was mistakenly rung {with 50-Seconds still left in the Round}. Both fighters
went back to their respective corners and sat down.

The 'Time-Keeper' alerted Referee - Larry Rozadill of the mistake, and both fighters were called back
out at the {2:26 Mark} with 34-Seconds still remaining the Round.

Danny went back to a steady attack, and fored Jose to back away on the defensive.

Round 7 ............ Danny Lopez {10-9}

Note:
After the Round was over, Ringside Physician - Dr. Bernhard Schwarz went into Jose Torres' corner and
told the corner that he was recommending that the bout be stopped.

The Jose Torres corner agreed, and Jose would not come out for Round 8.

Danny Lopez

It was a real good fight. Jose Torres was a lot better than I thought he was. I saw him fight on TV a few
times, and he looked good. But, he's a lot tougher than I thought.

I went down in Round 2, but I wasn't hurt. It was good punch on the 'chops', and I went down. But I
was clear headed.

I didn't know a lot about Jose Torres, but I found out that he could punch. But he also could take one
as well. He fought hard in every round. He's one tough Cookie.

I'm lucky that they stopped the fight after the 7th Round. I was very tired during the Round, and my
right-hand swelled up. I was in pain, and I'm not sure how many more Rounds I could have fought.

Now, I'm going to take 6-Weeks off, and come back in November. I'll probably take another 10-Round
non-title bout to stay sharp.

I guess I'll be defending my Title against #1 WBC-ranked - David Kotey in early-1978.

Danny 'Little Red' Lopez has been terrific from the beginning, I know it has to end one of these days and I'm not looking forward to it. Really appreciate the work you put into these threads and I'm hoping we're going to see a book at some point. Excellent work!

Danny came out aggressively, and immediately started to pump in heavy 'one-two' punches to
the head.

Danny caught Jose with a 'jolting' left-hook to the chin at the {0:34 Mark}, and Jose wobbled
backwards and toward the front Ring area.

Danny then moved in, and slammed in a salvo of punches as Jose was 'pinned' on the front Ropes.

Danny then caught Jose with a '4-Punch' combination to the head that 'stunned' him. Then Danny
fired in a 'double' left-hook to the jaw, and came in with a 'sweeping' right-hand as Jose was falling
down on the 'seat-of-his-pants' at the {0:41 Mark}.

Jose was up at the '2-Count', and wobbled as he walked over to the right-side Ring area as he took
the Mandatory 8-Count from referee - Larry Rozadilla.

When the action resumed, Danny came 'blasting-forward' with fast-flurry as Jose moved to the
front Ropes.

Danny then caught Jose with a big 'sweeping' left-hook to the jaw, and Jose bent down and put
his hands on the canvas from preventing from going down at the {1:02 Mark}.

Jose took the 'Mandatory-Count', and was ready to go. Danny then moved forward, and battered
Jose along the front Ropes with vicious 'one-two' blows to the head, snapping Jose's head several times.

At the {1:43 Mark} Jose was 'badly' hurt from taking several right-hands 'flush-in-the-face'. But
10-Seconds later, Jose fought himself off the Ropes, and came back with an offensive-charge to
back Danny out to Center-Ring.

The bout then turned into a 'Rock-em Sock-em' slugfest as both fighters traded good punches on
each other over the last 40-Seconds of the Round

Round 4 ........... Danny Lopez {10-7}
