Brutal bodyshot!!!
While it's still June 23rd here, it's already June 24th elsewhere.
Anyway........ June 24, 1995. RJJ vs. Yo Vinny Pazienza. Ahhhhhh..... the memory of it still makes me smile.
Yo Vinny would've needed the help of some of Corleone's men to beat Roy that night.
It was a beauuuuuuuutiful mismatch. ;D

I showed my friend that combination at the end and he was in awe. Had to rewind it multiple times for him as he could not believe them.
One of those outsized egos who thought he was God's Gift. Thought he was better than he really was, when in reality he was just a pug. Got a lot of notoriety from his comeback from injury, which of course is admirable, but just made him the bigger-than-life personality he always thought he was. Yo Vinny was a jerk.... and I thoroughly enjoyed his beating at the hands of RJJ.

So great to hear Reg and Jim the best double act of commentators we ever had on these shores (Ian Darke gets a special mention)

That was peak Benn just getting ready to a rematch against Eubank.

Puerto Rican lightweight Carlos Ortiz stops Sugar Ramos via TKO to defend his WBC and WBA belts.
This was their 2nd matchup, since Ortiz had also TKO'ed Ramos the year before.
This is from their first matchup in 1966.

Puerto Rican superfeatherweight Alfredo Escalera retains his WBC title via UD against Shinichi "Buzzsaw" Yamabe in Japan.
Escalera had beaten Yamabe via TKO 3 months earlier in Japan as well.

Wilfredo Vazquez v Jae Won Choi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwvPwP1eCxY
Wilfredo Vazquez was a very good fighter that Naz destroyed with complete ease.
Good find. ;D
It was nice to hear the commentary after the fight about that being Wilfredo Jr.'s first time seeing his father fight live, and about his showing off his own potential boxing skills. Junior did go on to have a fairly good career, but nothing at all like his father, which is the case more often than not in father-son boxing careers.
Vasquez was a guy I really enjoyed watching. I remember watching that fight. It is fascinating to me to watch Vasquez destroy that guy while trying not to hurt him. He saw right away that he was levels above his opponent and ended the fight but never really set down on his punches; he only hit him as hard as he needed to.

8 JULY 1990 - Breland v Davis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3Z4_RRZUvo
He was underappreciated in so many ways from skill set to what he came back from before wba title run. Truth be told though Hamed got in with a well worn 34 yr old version of Vasquez who was extremely 'fortunate' to get nod over Rios in fight prior to Hamed. It was a terrible decision with Rios outpunching and out working him throughout from angles and Vasquez punches had little to no effect on the unknown challenger.
Classic fight! 2 New Yorkers fighting in Vegas!
Breland went on to beat Honeyghan and win a title so he was still successful.
Well
July 11 ?
had to be 1996
and
this one ;D

Santos v Alcine
Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67KSf7XOHO8
Daniel Santos was a very slick southpaw. Oddly enough, he never achieved the levels of acclaim here in his native Puerto Rico that other fighters did. I personally witnessed his second fight against Margarito here in San Juan.
I don't know... it may have been a combination of several factors. One I would have to mention is that his career coincided very much with Trinidad's. Trinidad's shadow probably didn't do Daniel much good. Also, there was this general perception that Daniel had other interests, and didn't give boxing the priority it deserved. That one is probably pretty unfair and maybe inaccurate, IMO. Finally, Daniel got in with some lousy promoters who mismanaged at least part of his career. It is thought that Daniel, with better promoting, could've gone even further. Still, he had a pretty good career, and was a very difficult opponent for many. He's one of Puerto Rico's past boxing champions, so it's not all bad in the public's eye.
Remember Santos beating Takaloo and holding the wbo title for ages. He beat some good fighters.

Cintron v (Walter) Matthysse
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6DK5TB6UGo
One of Cintron's brightest moments. For all he accomplished, it always seems he could've gone a lot further. He had amazing natural, physical gifts.
