But I do have a feeling that, because there's such a backlash against Margarito from the PBF fans, that if Margarito took the fight and then beat Williams, some people who've talked up Williams would pull a 360 and talk about how untested he was, and what a garbage fighter he was.

Quintana would outbox him IMO. To me, he's the best prospect at 147.
CC excellent points and reminds me of the Cintron scenario, but there would not be much of a backlash here(apart from maybe JT ROCK and FrozenSolid~ ;D),we all see Williams is dangerous. I think Williams should take 1 or 2 more fights before Tony, maybe a Cintron fight or Collazo,I want to see him against a strong WW. Actually just saw Floyd transcript on boxingtalk saying that even if Tony beats Williams or vise versa, would prove nothing. That is a joke! Williams is correct,I don't think lil Floyd wants any part of these big boys at WW
Come on bro who's Williams beat... a shot Mitchell. A win over Williams doesn't do sh*t for Margarito but prove he can beat prospects! He needs to start beating champions. Judah, hell even Mayorga or Spinks, Forrest or Quartey are around. Start fighting some names. If he strings together enough good wins over the likes of Cintron, Clottey, Williams & Quintana he starts looking appealing.
Re: opponent for Williams
It's not just the win though, look at Williams,he has to be one of the biggest WW ever. He's a threat and is just as dangerous as Judah etc if not more so. Here's my hitlist for Tony
Clottey(will be bloody tough)
Williams
Quintana/Collazo/Mosley
If he beats 2 of those, that's great and no one can deny him. They are ALL dangerous in 1 way or another.Remember all Baldo did is beat Zab and a shot Gatti,so Tony's wins over the above mentioned guys would be sensational resume wise.

I agree with most of what you say, but if he beats 2 as you say it looks more than likely it would be Clottey (no givin) & then Williams. Doesn't look that great to me. But add a Quintana & Collazo then things look interesting. Remember Baldomir's beat Judah who was the world welterweight champion coming in. I'm not saying wins over those guys for Margarito wouldn't be sensational but the only guy you mention who is a former champion is Mosley.

Zab Judah the three time world Champion and Undisputed Welterweight Champ when Baldo beat him and Gatti was challenging for his 3rd Title in as many weight divisions. ;D Clottley, Williams, Quintana, Collazo? maybe tougher wins but resume wise :P
