Well there is the statment of "where the rubber meets the road"..meaning this is where something is finalized or resolved. I'd imagine the term rubber match predates this though.

Yes. Bridge is the place where this is used most frequently ... but it is applied in almost every other case of a deciding third competition, from sport to elections to whatever.

rubber bridge is the source of the term ... a rubber is the best two out of three games. If same team wins two straight games the rubber is won, no need to play the third game, like when a team wins 4 straight in the world series.
To call a third fight after two split wins a rubber is just to use the bridge term in a different context. Just another way of saying best 2 out of three. It's a loose fit at best.
Got nothing to do with bands that can march either way or stretch either way or with boxers (or boxing fans) that swing either way.

It's like two guys having protected sex with a girl days apart and she getting pregnant and this is the paternity test on Maury to see who pays for the child. See... that why they call it a rubber match to see which one's stood up the best ;D  In the last case Pacquiao's Trojans stood up to Morales' Magnums.  Why do you think there was a "glove" issue in the first fight.. you know the phrase "no glove no love" which is why Pacquiao said he wanted clitoris gloves(a condom) ;D  It all makes sense!!!
