marvin hagler vs roy jones: who would have won and why?

When I think of Marvin Hagler I think of a professional guy. He took the best punch Tommy Hearns had to offer and wobbled but stayed up. Unbelievable chin and desire. Jones would not have knocked out Marvin, and to win a decision. no way down the stretch. Strategy was needed more than anything, and Jones was fast but would have been worn out by Marvin's jab and just relentlessness. Someone mentioned if Ray could do it Roy could. Ray studied Marvin for years and watched him as commentator on HBO.. For 6 years he thought about fighting Marvin and saw his buddies like Hearns and Duran fight Marvin. And he knew Hearns and Duran better than anyone and gauged Hagler from those fights. He knew what to do with Hagler and what not to. Ray also had a style to beat Marvin most guys did not. He fought lateral and moved lateral the whole time and most guys cannot more laterally like that the whole fight like Ray. He did not stay on the ropes, He hit and then moved. He just timed Marvin well. Talk about studying a guy. Roy reacted more in fighting but I do not think he looked for weaknesses like Ray. My pick is Marvin to stop Roy in 10 rounds in a good fight for Roy for a few rounds of boxing but a boring start, and then Marvin slowly getting to him and Roy spending too much time on the ropes. This is not all those other opponents of Roy like Gonzales who fought Roy and couldn't do much when Roy leaned on the ropes, this is Marvin Hagler.

yea but if roy on rope tactic didnt work he would just change tactic and move around ring he wouldnt stay on the ropes if it wasnt working roy was quick possibly faster than ray leonard and roy hit hard remember that body shot he koed hill with ?? well i think roys much better speed and ring movement would beat hagler he would just follow roy all night halgers jab wouldnt bother roy at all roy is one of best fighters ive ever seen in his prime it would take a hell of a man to beat him in my opinion anyway i see 12 round ud for roy

Totally agree with X.....Jones would have become worried when Hagler had no respect for Jones power. john Mugabi hit harder than Jones hands down. Hagler took the best Mugabi had to offer. Not that Mugabi was anywhere on the skill level of jones but power wise he was far superior. I also do not believe Jones was a better boxer then Leonard so if Hagler was able to deal with the ring craft of Ray Roy would not be able to overly outbox him...IMO Marvin by TKO late in the fight. Jones becomes dejected and Marvin catches him about 10 or 11

I agree with you wholeheartedly. This thread is not a put down of Jones, there is no shame in losing to a fighter like Marvelous Marvin.

I just don't see Roy being able to stay away long enough before getting caught. Hagler KO/TKO.

You can't use the Ray Leonard fight to compare for a few reasons. 1st, hagler was robbed in that fight. 2nd, hagler wasn't at the top when he fought leonard. 3rd, hagler fought leonard right handed unnecessarily to prove something. 4th, roy jones dont have the chin of leonard.

Jones at Middleweight? Was near unstoppable, and he was unstoppable at Middleweight. Jones only had trouble at Light Heavyweight(if Delvalle is considered trouble for one round)

But Jones only showed weakness aftr moving back down in weight.

if this is 100 percent Jones at Middleweight(his prime wasn't until Super Middleweight) then he may be near unstoppable but Hagler would be more experienced.

leonard wasnt in his prime either he hadnt fought for 3 years plus hagler wasnt robbed it was close fight but he gave away first 4 rounds and it was his own fault for trying to box with leonard first 4 rounds

and i agree with majesty roy jones was near unstoppable in his prime no one knows how good roys chin was he was never hit in his prime at his proper weight with power punch he was only koed when he was past his prime plus it was at lhw when he had just fought at hw took alot out of roys body

hagler wins. only because roy has way too many bad habits. i don't think his natuarl abilty won have a fight with hagler

If anybody could stop Hagler it would be JOnes IMO... Whether he ko's Hagler or not this fight is easily JOnes'. Not that he would win easily every time, but that he wins this 9/10 times. He is too fast, and more importantly too big for Hagler who never fought a big guy who was also a better boxer than him... Think Leonard-Hagler, but in this fight Jones is faster than Leonard was at that point, and he hits hard enough that HAgler can't walk through his punches to counter like he did against Leonard.

are you on drugs? How can you say that Mugabi hits harder than RJJ? Thats bullshit. Its just as stupid as saying Hagler is a better boxer than him... Hagler didn't outbox Leonard, He sure as hell didn't outbox Hearns... The only person he had a close boxing match with was Duran, and Duran was 25 pounds above his original weight, and wasn't nearly the power puncher he was in comparison to his earlier days. Hagler was a good boxer, but he was more of a pressure puncher who could take punches, and I am not debating whether or not RJJ can KO him which I think he could, but that RJJ could keep Hagler away with his power, and that his footwork, angles, skill overwhelms Hagler worse than it did Toney who was a much better defensive fighter than Hagler, and a faster fighter than Hagler with a heavyweight chin, more skill than Hagler. If RJJ could hit Toney that often then he would be able to hit Hagler with his eyes close.

jones jr had the superier boxing skills,he would out box hagler for a ud...IMO jones is probably the fastest ,most elusive middle weight ever....but in saying that i prefer to watch pressure fighters like hagler,every one loves a ko specalist ;D

Marvin was relentless and always busy and working. He was never just sitting there with the exception of the Duran fight where he expected an aggressive Duran. That was his only glitch in all his fights. Duran was just a fighter he never expected to fight. But I think that Marvin had a 4th gear and usually fought in 4th . He did not have many different gears. When he fought Hearns he fought in 6th gear. But I think he was just a very determined and sharp fighter who knew his craft and I think he would have outworked Jones and stopped him. Jones never fought a guy as good as Hagler really, and Hagler fought a few guys as good as Jones

Jones fought Toney, Hopkins who were both easily as good as Hagler if not better, and Griffin was technically way better than Hagler.. Also Hagler wasn't always relentless in the Hagler-Leonard fight he thought he could box with Leonard, and lost the first three rounds, and also against Duran he tried to box him. Against Hearns he was lucky it ended when it did because they both couldn't go 12 rounds at that pace. Nobody came close to outworking prime Jones so there is no evidence he would have been worn down by the smaller, not as strong Hagler.
