Re: Winky Wright vs. Ray Leonard at 160
I don't think this is a good matchup for Winky.
Winky as he's gotten older has gotten more and more flat footed. He edges forward with that peekaboo and I've gotten the feeling more and more that Winky would have trouble with a true stick and move fighter because he's become pretty flat footed. He really hasn't faced many stick and move guys. Shane's fast but never really been a true boxer mover, Taylor probably could do it but all he does is back straight up into the ropes.
I think Ray would win a close decision. Power on either side wouldn't matter, nobodies getting knocked out in this fight. I think Ray would move a lot, turn Winky and throw flashy combos, they might not really land that much but I think he'd end up edging it out.
Re: Winky Wright vs. Ray Leonard at 160
SRL is far more superior than anyone Wright has been in the ring with. SRL would school Tito, SSM, JT. His speed, power, reflexes.
I actually see SRL flurrying and breaking down Winkys boring defense wall. You got to be fast in order to do that Winky can only cover up so fast, thats why I thought PBF would even have a good chance against Winky as well.
Re: Winky Wright vs. Ray Leonard at 160
Leonard wasn't all that fast at middleweight, and ther is no way he could break down Winky's defense. Also IMO I can't see Leonard schooling Jermain for the life of me. He is way too small, and though he is a better boxer than Jermain he certainly wasn't faster or stronger than Jermain at middleweight. I don't see Leonard schooling Shane Mosley either who would also give Leonard a great fight and is a comparable fighter to Leonard. I think PBF would have a better chance against Winky because 1. He's faster than Leonard 2. He is a smarter fighter. 3. He can avoid the jab. 4. He has better defense.

It's a good analysis, but I think that Winky still has very fast hands, and he still has good reflexes. Nobody can jab against him which is a key weapon for Ray on the outside, and if he can't win that war he can't win the fight because Winky would keep Ray on the outside for most of the fight, and unlike younger Leonard, the middleweight Leonard IMO couldn't run away all night, and on the inside at first his quick combinations would work, but his lack of power and defense while throwing combinations would allow Wright to walk him backwards and land the straight punches which eventually dictate the fight. I think he is a better schooled, and stronger man who is fast enough to hit any version of Leonard let alone old Leonard who was being tagged quite a bit by an old Hagler.

so your also saying JT would be able to defeat Hagler, Hearns, Duran?
at 160 SSM would not be any where near his prime. he was so much more faster and stronger and powerful at his initial lower weight classes.
is PBF smarter than SRL? hmmmmm perhaps, but id say def more safer. we'll see more answers after cinco de mayo
Re: Winky Wright vs. Ray Leonard at 160
I don't think Taylor could beat Hagler at all, but Hearns I think he would knock out simply because he has Hearns' height and speed, but he is too strong for Hearns IMO. I think Duran as well is far too small and by the time he was a middleweight slow to beat Taylor. I don't get the SSM piece? Are you saying he wasn't at his prime? If so neither was Leonard when he fought at middlewieght, and SSM wasn't comming off 3 years retirement, but he was just an example of somebody who was fast and threw good combinations that was still not enough to beat Winky or even come close, but he is a little smaller than Leonard and thats why this fight would be closer. BTW I am not saying Leonard would lose hands down I just think Winky would get the best of him, but I could easily see the big hearted and even more talented Leonard pulling off a well earned victory.

You know...I don't have any expectations of Taylor anymore...I honestly dont know what the fwock happened to the kid. I shit you not...since HBO started pumping money up his ass crack...he aint been worth shit pumpin out of a gooses ass.
Really.
Look back through Taylors career & youll see some serious fights from Taylor. Some very clean decisive wins & some heavy handed TKO's. It's either the fact that he stepped up the opp...or he's just fallen the fwock off mentally.
I say it;s the latter.
Also...back to the bulk of this post...no way that Taylor can compete against the fantastic three.
Hagler, Leonard, or Hearns would eat his ass alive. Taylor starts that backin out shit...not throwing on the back foot...just pedalin...he's out.

Its kind of double standards because he did hold his own against Winky who could compete with all three of these guys. IMO Taylor might not have that special ko gift, but he is strong enough and fast enough to compete with maybe any fighter. I mean he hasn't won IMO, but he has held his own against Hopkins and Winky, and though Hopkins was old he had beaten everybody for a very long time very decisively until he fought Taylor.
Re: Winky Wright vs. Ray Leonard at 160
i'll say this IMO Winky can decision JT, and even B-Hop, but i dont see him winning against a prime Hearns, Prime Hagler or Prime SRL.
we all know Winky aint no slouch hes got hands down the best defence in the game but nobody of Hearns, Hagler or SRL CALIBER was around to test Winky.

I don't see that he held his own against Wright. I think he lost that fight.
Taylor might be atheletically sound...but he's not fundamentally strong nor is his head all in the game. Taylor does best against smaller men & not legit 160lb fighters. Most of the middles that he fought & dispatched early in his career were gents on the rise from 154lbs.
Also...main issue, IWO, is the letting go of Pat Burns.
It just makes no sense to me...I still say that this was cooked up by HBO execs to raise Taylor's status & super star potential putting him with a super star trainer in Steward.
Re: Winky Wright vs. Ray Leonard at 160
CC IN 24 Wack,I agree with everything you say about JT. I have been willing to give him chance, have defended him at times and respect the fact that he fights anyone BUT I just cannot get a real liking for him,he is just far far too flawed. He's just a pure brute force guy but what when he fights someone who is his match physically, whom he cannot just backup or outmuscle? I'd like to see what happens then.
As for Winky v SRl,Winky is a defensive genius against anyone he has fought thus far but NONE of those peeps compare to SRL.I pretty much agree with Oumafans post, excellent analysis bro.I think SRL by quite a few points in an UD.
Re: Winky Wright vs. Ray Leonard at 160
leonard would outland winky but punches would be hitting arms and elbows winky would land most affective punches but leonard would throw more its pick em depends what judges we get do they like accurate and clean punching or do they like punches that are thrown in bunches and more active guy ??

Re: Winky Wright vs. Ray Leonard at 160
Ray Leonard never 'schooled' anyone of consequence above welterweight. Not only would Winky right win a unanimous decision over him at middleweight, he also would outpoint him at 154 as well. Leonard never impressed me above 147. And he sure as hell wouldn't get away with that little last 30 second of a round pitter patter that stole him his undeserved Hagler W against a technician like Winky.
