You know it's going tits up when:

1. We in the UK don't do anything despite the death penalty being illegal here.

2. Somehow, our glorious leaders linked him with the war on Terror (whatever that means) when he had nothing to do with any terrorist activity outside his own country - and certainly not 9/11 or London and Madrid.

3. Saddam gets done for crimes against humanity, when our invading force into a sovereign country has terrorised (there's that word again) and killed over half a million civilians.

4. He gets done for gassing civilians, when we just attack them with missiles and call it collateral damage.

5. We in the west armed and supported him and kept him on power for over 20 years

6. We invaded him because he tortured people and imprisoned them without trial. Then we did the same in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.

7.Our occupation troops routinely refer to the Iraquis as filthy towelheads, sand niggers etc (and so do some people on this board). Hearts and Minds, eh? We've done well there.

8. We invaded him the second time because he had WMD (ha!), was a trynannical dictator, did not allow any democracy, presided over a system of corrupt judges etc. Yet we don't invade Kim Il Jung in North Korea. What is the obvious answer to every tinpot third world nutter ...... make sure you actually DO have WMD and nobody will dare attack you. maybe those Iranians aren't stupid after all!

and finally

9. When a mass-murdering megolomaniac dictator has more dignity and courage facing death, than the cowards that we have now decided to put in place to replace him.

Didn't see them shouting 'Muqtadr' too much when Saddam was in power, but it must serve the interests of jihad to do so to an unarmed, bound 70year old who is about to die

I like wars, generally - we Brits are very very warlike .......... but this one stinks and I feel consistently lied to. If they remade Apocalypse Now about the Iraq war, Marlon would not be quoting 'The horror, the horror', it would be 'The hypocrisy, the hypocrisy'

Did you know that in Britain and the US it is illegal to lie to a government official, but not for the government to lie to the people?

can you tell me what is the source for the 500,000 dead iraquis? There has been a story that varies a bit from time to time, but it basically says that sanctions caused 500,000 iraqui children to die. The source most often quoted is UNICEF but that report, I could not find it on their website. Someone gave me this link http://www.unicef.org.uk/index_s.asp...news/iraq1.htm, and it did not work. again, I searched on their website and was unable to find anything.

I am beginning to suspect that this is an urban legend and in fact bogus. BUT maybe my darling missy can give us the source of the report.

I really don't know how we let it get that bad. I dunno why the majority of america was convinced to re-elect bush thinking he'd finish the war with alittle more time in office. My favorite line of this reasoning "in a second term he'll have the confidence to pass important bills" ::** . He started his presidency by throwing the surplus right out the window. We'd be in substantial debt even if the war and stuff didn't happen. Thankfully he has to leave office in '08 regardless.

Hi Mad_Dog, happy new year to you. I don't have a source for the 500,000 figure - it's just something that have seen bandied around by talking heads on the TV. It may well be untrue .... but my point was about the fact that we have killed innocent civilians, and probably more than Saddam did.

I don't have the answer to the problem out there, if I did, I would be shouting it from the rooftops, but I'm pretty sure that I would have mishandled things less badly than the idiots running our respective countries.

it appears that this figure originated from UNICEF but there was misrepresentation of facts that even UNICEF had to clarify itself. Seems like this 500K figure is a bogus one. The ol M_D will return with resources as soon as his family responsibilities allow
