Roy didn't really pick his spots as much against Toney... he fought alot.. and I see Toney countering Calzaghe quite easily... When he fought Nunn he was able to counter the whole fight, and hit Nunn with cleaner shots than he was being hit with, and gradually broke Nunn down, but also Nunn was a faster and better boxer than Calzaghe as well.

Highly doubtful. A supermiddleweight JT was much faster than you give him credit for I think. I can see Calzaghe winning the first two or three rounds. After that it would be Toney doing the picking. To win JC would have to fight a perfect fight, boxing, moving in and out and not making one mistake because Toney had awesome one punch power at super middle. JT could hurt Calzaghe whereas Calzaghe could not hurt him is what Im saying. All Toney would have to do to come out victorious is just be James Toney. He was just as good a boxer at 168 as Calzaghe and he hit a lot harder and had a better chin to boot. Calzaghe puts up a valiant effort for two rounds and then is timed as Toney gets settled into his rhythm and begins to land big shots and keeps coming forward. By the later rounds, Calzaghe would not be able to keep him off, get away or outland the stronger JT and would end up getting KOed, most likely in spectacular old school James Toney fashion ie, Michael "Second To" Nunn. In the end, he's just not strong enough to deal with Toney, who was a brute at that weight class.Quote:

Did he fuck, he was behind on the scorecards by 4 rounds, 6 rounds and 7 rounds respectively. He caught Nunn with a great left hook. If he was breaking him down he certainly disquised it well. I think Toney vs Calzaghe is a close fight. I've been watching quite a bit of james toney over the last 3-4 days and from what i can gather, his best wins seemed to be against fighters who were a bit past their prime. He was lucky to get the win against MCCallum. Iran Barkely had already been stopped inside 1 against nigel benn. Even when he beat Williams, williams went on to get a technical draw (altho he was well behind) and lose to Merqui sosa in his next 2 (they do say hindsight is 20-20). It just seems to me that he never really did anything spectacular and his record is pretty easy to pick apart. So i'm sitting with ICE COLD on this one, so whilst i give Toney is dues for being a great fighter, i think Calzaghe has a very good chance of beating him.Quote:

Calzaghe i have followed since i can remeber, and i don't think we have ever really seen the best calzaghe over a few rounds. Lacy was a superb fight and he was brilliant, but IMO that fight 5 years ago, calzaghe would have been even better. someeone like toney in his prime would of driven calzaghe to fight his best, most fights he had in his prime he either finished them in the first few rounds (viet, mitchel) fights that were enough to get him motevated he finished so fast that it is hard to see just how good he was then, the other fights you could see a frustrated calzaghe who didn't perform they way he could.
tony may of be a big hitter, but calzaghe has one hell of a chin, he has walked through some real big hits, been in there with some big hitters and never really looked troubled - hell lacy didn't seem to be able to phase him.
i think joe would take this with a UD

Calzaghe has never been in with some who had the power, speed, and skill of James Toney at 168. He might have fought guys who matched Toney in ONE of those areas, but he probably hasn't fought someone who could match Toney in TWO of these areas, never mind three. Lacy couldn't phase him because he couldn't hit him...I take that back, I think he caught Joe with one hook. You can't compare Toney to Lacy, Veit or Mitchell.
