Re: I REALLY needed to vent this somewhere
Well a lot of different responses there, to be honest i wrote that under a bit of crazy hysteria so i'd like to clarify a few things.
Firstly she is not just some cheap girl who'd want to come and live with me and all that shite. She signs in a band and stays in the 4 star hotel where they play a 3 hour gig every night. Ive been there seen them so i know this 100%. She spoke excellent English and was obviously pretty educated cus she knew a fair bit about quite a few things. Obviously gets paid a fair bit too cus she was drinking cocktails all night (twice) and never mentioned spending too much once. She was definately not some cheap ass girl
When i first met here i actually really liked here, she was outgoing witty a lot of fun and everything i said was pretty honest with a couple of white lies that everyone makes (those shoes look nice ect...). Then she became really insecure and needed reasurence about EVERYTHING. When a girls doing that and you still like her then its pretty hard not to say a couple of half truths and a few downright lies. Then it becomes kind of intoxicating to have that much influence over someone. In the end im not really sure whether she fell for the real me or the one I projected. To be honest i am only 18 and damn she was 27 was what was keeping me going near the end. I mean come on if you were that age thats some good bragging rights right there. Whether it was worth it .... probably not actually.
All that faithfullness stuff and saving it for someone you actually care about : Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt, got cheated on ..... twice, been dumped for an ex and finally had my family insulted. So im not particularly keen on going down that road anytime soon, I'd like to find a stable girlfriend and all that shite and the last two lasted a fair bit and were getting serious, but they always end up treating you like crap in the end.
Miles your right it SHOULD be hard to teach without a uni degree, thats what i was told but i did it anyway because people on the TEFL course told me otherwise. I think Vietnam is a real up and coming country but is in desperate need of native English speakers and doesn't have anywhere near the amount that Thailand for example does. Of the 4 other people who worked at the same place only 1 actually had a degree.
3 days later i have no idea why the hell i started this thread its all chilled, had a talk with her, sorted it out (mostly) and feel like a bit of a pussy .... oh well nothin i can do now ;D
Cheers for the comments and critisim CC"s all round for helping in my hour of self imposed need ::**
Re: I REALLY needed to vent this somewhere
Actually, I was being a bit harsh there anyway. If there is a demand for teachers and not enough qualified teachers to do the job then they've got to get what they can I suppose. Does Thailand have a lot of native instructors? Ive never been to Thailand, and would never consider working in most South East Asian countries. The money just isnt good enough.
I live and work in Korea and the conditions are somewhat stricter regarding illegal teaching. Many illegal workers are deported every month. Usually for not having VISA's or being caught doing private lessons. Strangely most of them herald from Canada. :-\
You are right, Vietnam is developing but is still some way from being what I would class as a developed nation. Incomes are too low over there to atract a great deal of qualified teachers. Much like China. Much of that should change over the coming decade as they seek more business English. What kind of school are you working at?
Oh and :coolclick:

Wow you work in Korea, I'm really not surprised about all the people getting deported and the lark over there. Its a really developed place, more so than most Western countries. I would never dream of working there unless i had a job set up over there and the chances of that are slim to none without a degree.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head with with the lack of qualified teachers and that over here, that's why its so easy to get a job. It was quite funny actually, I went to go talk to the school and they asked me how old i was, i said 18 (Look more like 21 really). She looked a bit shocked as all Easterners do when i tell them that but then she regained her composure. She said "So your 25 then are you" I was saying no im 18 and she cut me off and said "So your 25 yes". Went along with it and got the job. This was at a private school as well for gods sake, it was a primary school for kids aged 5-11 and was pretty well stocked. All i had to do was one demonstration lesson (which didn't even go that well as i was crapping myself) and i got the job. Amazingly easy only 4 days after I arrived.
A lot more English speakers go to Thailand as they see it as more "Western" but that wasn't really what i was looking for. Know what you mean about the money, not sure how old you are but if your living in Korea and settled down then SEA and for you really. For me however i was earning a whopping $15 US an hour which is more than earn at fucking home. Doing 25 hours a week, paying $150 a month in accommodation in a house me and other teachers rent, and thats a hell of a lot of money for someone my age and a really great life compared to back home. You'd be surprised you know, Vietnam is really up and coming and in 15 years i'd really expect it to be near the level of Korea. Some stuff needs work on like the roads and stuff but this place is a lot lot more developed than i expected it to be especially in the city's.
I would give you a CC but I gotta wait 24 hours, cheers for the interest :coolclick:

An interesting post, pal. Sounds like you are having a very interesting time. If you are really into the teaching I do really recommend getting qualified. It would really help you for the future and for teaching in other countries If that is something you would like to do also. Like you say, Vietnam will grow in the future and therefore will incomes and then other qualified teachers will come. You need to stay ahead of that development. Even I am just finishing my Masters in an online course in TESL at Birmingham University. There is always room for learning. If you are only in it for the short term then dont worry about any of that and just enjoy your ride.
Yep, been in Korea now for a good while. My 5th year began in September. Its been an interesting journey with its ups and downs as ive managed to work out how to get the system to work to my advantage. I really like life out here now, things are going very nicely. Korea is a very good place to live for me. Costs of living are low, rents are cheap. Nice place to save money and still enjoy your quality of life. People in the west have the perception that Korea is still an economically undeveloped place, but that is far from the truth. Seoul is as modern as a capital city can be. Korea is the place where Ive finally grown up. Got settled here, got married here and plan on sticking around for many a year more! Im the ripe old age of 27 BTW.
I wouldnt mind seeing Vietnam on one of my travels actually. Done the Japan trip 3 times, been to the Philipines, wouldnt mind checking out more of South East Asia though.
