If you want to see a great performence full of emotion watch Forrest Whittaker in ' king of scotland ' or Gary Oldman in Dracula now they are good actors compare that with RDN in Frankenstien i honestly thought it was a comedy .
Watching Robert De Niro is like listening to the Lighthouse Family or watching Ainsley Harriot cook .
He plays the part convincingly. Jake LaMotta would be the first to admit that he is not Joyce nor Shakespeare. DeNiro convincingly portrays a selfish, chauvanistic, crude and angry man who also happened to give a lot of great fights and who even managed to beat a prime SRR. Looking and acting somewhat emotionally stunted and looking a bit mean and moody is part of having the character down pretty well.
Im not going into a defence of DeNiro as an actor but he has certainly played a number of great roles. Taxi driver, Goodfellas and the second Godfather spring readily to mind. If you are looking for overt sentimentality and a good old weep then these roles will not be to your taste.
The fight scenes in Raging Bull are not about showing boxing reality. They are almost choreographed pieces and are designed to appeal to those approaching the movie as a piece of expression and not as a reflection of a live fight per se. And what is the definition of a "good boxing actor" exactly? You lost me there!
Gary Oldman can be a good actor but his role in Dracula is hardly something that inspires. DeNiro was crap in Frankenstein too as you rightly pointed out.
Watching DeNiro is more akind to listening to Lou Reed than the Lighthouse family. The early stuff sizzles with life whereas the latter stuff blows more hot and cold but has its good points.

As for RDN what can you say he is badly flawed and limited as an actor Raging Bull was in my honest humble opinion one of the most overrated bits of cinema ever !
You mention the choreagraphed scenes as a piece of expression not a refelection per se and I'd agree but in live time the fight scenes were poor maybe you've got me there , the knockout scenes for example more a depiction of a state of mind and his inner psyche and maybe i approached it with the wrong state of mind being a boxing fan and not a Lamotta fan , but it certainly was needlessly over gratuitous,amatuerish and unrealistc.
Too me honestly it stank of a 6 week intrest .
it certainly seemed to be taking itself seriously as a boxing film and for me a real turn off .

If Raging Bull is so poor as you percieve it to be then I would be more than interested to know what you regard as a good movie. Dracula is really no comparison. I really dont understand what you think is so overrated about Raging Bull. Its well shot, its story is intriguing and overall its well acted.
The St Valentines day massacre is called so for good reason....it needs to be a little gratuitous...
