Sure if somebody is throwing punches he go into his shell, but he is always throwing punches, and always comming forward. Winky does not weight for his opponent to make a move he comes in lands the jab and his straight left along with a right hook to the body and then goes into his shell when his opponent tries to counter back. He made the Taylor fight interesting to watch, and he brought the fight to Ike Quartey whom alot of you thought would beat Winky, but instead Winky outpunched Quartey just did everything better. Winky is the second best fighter on the planet with the best resume of any fighter over the past 4-5 years. IMO he has made most of his fights exciting (except the Soliman fight, and the first Mosley fight) and this fight will be no different. Regardless of Hopkins age he will be comming in, in good shape. Hopkins is a great inside fighter, and he is tall which may alow him to hook around Winky's guard more effectively than Quartey, but Hopkins isn't quick enough to stay away from Winky, and he will have to resort to his rougher style. This fight is a blessing for boxing fans. It may have come late, but it will still be great.
You are correct, Winky is definitely a pressure fighter, but he's unique, because he's a pressure fighter #1 with defense and #2 who doesn't use pressure looking to KO. He come forward relentlessly behind that jab, but he never really looks for the big KO punch. He is the 2nd best fighter on the planet, just like you said.
This will be a great fight for real fight fans, students of the game. More casual fans, who like KO's and don't understand the subtleties might find this fight a little boring. If Hopkins gets rough, it will be in typical Hopkins rough fashion, which is not necessary fun to watch, even if it's effective. I'm looking forward to the fight, and I know I'll enjoy it, but I'm sure this fight will be interested to many casual fans. They won't appreciate what they are seeing.
Re: Winky IS A PRESSURE FIGHTER.
I thought Winky was trying to knock out Quartey more so than he has other opponents of late, and thats why he go thit more than usual, but also because if anyone knows the wrinkles in that style its Quartey.

Its not so much that Winky could make the fight boring, as boring as i find him.
Its just that Hopkins can be such a snake charmer at times, i fear the worst.
Good post though, its hard for me to remember Winky's a real brave dude.

Both guys are old. haha :) FACT It's an intriguing matchup, but not an exciting one.
Frazier is a pressure fighter. There really isn't no real pressure fighter today, other than about ONLY 3 fighters, and sometimes their gameplan is to retreat. So really... newbies to boxing don't know how a real pressure fighter fights... So this label of Winky as a pressure fighter is ridiculous.
what happens if theres a comic book convention that weekend tho?

Re: Winky IS A PRESSURE FIGHTER.
Of course he is, I guess what some people find boring about him is that every round tends to be the same, because he lacks explosiveness. Most of his fights just fall into a pattern, with Winky coming forward, blocking, jabbing, some body punching. Its just repetitive. I don't find him boring though, he's not one of my favorite fighters but I don't think he's boring.
And its interesting, look at the Taylor-Wright fight, who was the one making the fight? Clearly Winky, yet he's the boring one while Taylor's exciting.

Re: Winky IS A PRESSURE FIGHTER.
i havent watched much of winky. his fight against trinidad, taylor where i thought he was pressuring cos he thought thats the onli way he can win, and against ike it was semi pressure.
but realy i didnt think winky was a pressure fighter, made me wanna watch the fight a little more! cc!
Re: Winky IS A PRESSURE FIGHTER.
I wanted this fight to happen for awhile, (Taylor had to throw a wrench in it). This will be a great fight. I just hope BHOP isn't too big for him.
Re: Winky IS A PRESSURE FIGHTER.
I won't say Winkey is a pressure fighter....But there is something else he does better...
Due to Wright's Defense....And MAN IT IS IMPRESSIVE!!!!!!
It appears he is easy to hit...and he does get hit...but not in the spots you need to hit him...if that makes sense....Wright has that shell in which invites guys in thinking they wil get through...causing them to fight his fight...You almost cant help but to try and come in on him and go for the shots...like a kid next to a bag of candy telling him not to touch it until after dinner and it is only 3pm....Temptation too much.....
you get drawn in Wright keeps his tight defense and gets off when needed....
He doesn't pressure guys he makes guys do exactly what he wants them to....
He is one of those fighters who are a prime example of why the sport is called "Sweet Science:"......
A method to his madness but effective...Wright lets you do the work for him...
