He wasn't a great inside fighter... but he was good at it... he stood in the pocket for 8 rounds against George Mo Fo'ing foreman and I'm guessing you've seen the Thrilla right? More to inside fighting than just punching... the few fighters strong or skilled enough to get on the inside against Ali couldn't get to him.

He just held his arms up and let people pound away at him thats not good inside fighting thats just hoping the other fighter wastes up enough energy so you can take him out later in the fight but if fighter took his time and didn't waste so much energy you would be in big trouble but holding your arms up letting people pound away at you is not good inside fighting and if any trainer see you doing it he would tell you your an idiot more than likely and make you change it in a hurry.

When did i say he was one dimensional ?? he never done it in his early career he done it later in his career and it was bad tactic and if boxer knew how to deal with it properely it wouldn't of worked but it was new then and people were confused by it fair play to Ali for making it work but its a bad tactic imo and no trainer would tell you to use it.

There must honestly be a lot that you don't see when you're watching a fight if you think he just held his arms up and absorbed punishment... a lot of stuff going on there.
Angles he's covering and options he's leaving the other guy with. I've done it and it's no where near just a case of holding your arms up. you've got to be aware of where you're open and where the other guy is etc... you can't completely cover yourself just by keeping your guard up... this isn't fight night!!! :P
It might not look as pretty as bobbing and weaving... but it's very technical.

Foreman did,it didnt work
No he didn't maybe sometimes during the fight but he was just swinging wildy trying to get Ali out of there but he wasn't getting any power into his shots in later rounds because he was swinging wildy and Ali would lay on the loose ropes and it would take the damage away.

Or to put it another way,if thats ALL he was doing Foreman would have started clobbering him with uppercuts and big overhand crosses

Whenever I show it to any of my fighters,I caveat it with "If you ever try that,Ill kill you,Ali can do that,you cant"
He pounded Alis arms like mad,almost none of those shots land clean
