Well I guess its been made apparent that there ARE worse possiblities out there for a unification bout but this still is near the top of the list. If they don't have some respectable undercrads set-up, they better atleast have a fireworks show for everyone who bought a ticket.

I don't think they deserve that much credit really. It's a sad fact right now that apart from Wlad the remaining 3 'champions' probably arn't in the top 5 best heavies out there!
If I was Chagaev or Ibragimov, I'd rather fight the other than Sam Peter, Lamon Brewster, Wlad Klitchsko, Tony Thompson, Eddie Chambers, Chris Byrd, Calvin Brock, Oliver McCall, Sergio Lyakhovich, Chris Arreola and even Evander Holyfield.
I wouldn't put either Ibragimov, Maskaev, or Chagaev in the top 6 heavyweights out there. Well maybe Chagaev creeps in there but the fact remains there is nothing seperating any of the top 2-15 guys in the division and a title fight is no harder an opponent than fighting anyone in the top 10 or 15 really, Wlad aside of course.
Maybe so bro, but at least its two top 10 guys going at it. I'd rather see 1 match-up like this than 10 Wlad vs Austin type fights. I agree the division isn't the strongest but it is starting to get interesting!

This October, Seminole Warriors Boxing, Golden Grain Promotions and Sampson Lewkowicz, in association with Universum Box Promotions, will promote the
first heavyweight title unification bout in close to eight years :o when WBO champion Sultan Ibragimov faces off against his WBA counterpart, Ruslan Chagaev, in Moscow, Russia. The historic event presented by Nafta Moskva is not only the first unification bout between two European-born fighters and the first heavyweight unification bout held outside the United States, but it is the first heavyweight unification bout since 1999, when Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield engaged in two bouts with each fighter’s titles up for grabs. On Thursday, the two champions will meet the press for the official announcement of this historic fight.at the President Hotel in Moscow.
Finally,is the mess about to sorted out? Who do you favour?
YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
SULTAN WILL BE THE UNDISPUTED CHAMP :D

Well, credit where credit's due. They are unifying titles; this is definitely good for the division (and ultimately the sport). Also Chagaev has beaten Virchis, Sprott, Ruiz and Valuev in his last 4 figths - well, hardly an entrance ticket to HOF, but not too bad either. I dont think Thompson, Chambers or Arreola have beaten anyone of that class for example. Byrd or Holyfield haven't done it in 5 years.
And finally - they could do a lot worse than meeting each other. Just look at their respective rankings. Out of the WBA top 15 there are at the very least 10 names (and arguably 14), who would be a supposedly easier defense for Chagaev. The WBO rankings seem much stronger for some reason, but I'm quite positive Ibragimov could find an easier route anyway.
Finally - on a completely unrelated note - it seems like a bit of a stretch to call any of these fighters European-born, let alone promote the match-up as the first unification of that sort. I know they were both born in the Soviet Union, which I guess was an European country, but still - geographically they were born in Asia. I was just wondering if they are just calling them Europeans to make more money - and wondering if that marketing ploy actually works?

Holy shit I hope not. Sultan is the worst of our 4 Heavyweight champs right now. I like Chagaev, and I'd have to say if he was unified champ I wouldn't be disappointed. I dunno why Wlad didn't try to set up a fight with Chagaev though. He was all set for unification with Valuev before he lost it, so why not beat the guy that slayed the giant? You know whats a horrible thought? If Don King some how gets Valuev to meet the winner of this and he gets the win, then he could be unified champion :'(. What a sad day for boxing that would be!
Re: Ibragimov-Chagaev unification!
i dont see how people could think this will be boring, unless they have only seen sultan fight austin and briggs, sultan can be more explosive than pacqiao, and he WILL KTFO chagaev COLD

I saw the Austin & Briggs fight. I've also seen the warmup fight for Briggs in March, and another of his fights on Youtube. I wasn't really impressed with him as a whole. I don't think he has the tools to beat Chagaev.

watch his fights before he fought whittaker, and the whittaker fight himself, the man is explosive when he wants to be, but he knows when to box and he is good at it
also i am disgusted that you could even begin to think he is the worst of the champs, maskaev is fucking horrible
Re: Ibragimov-Chagaev unification!
I think Chageav will take this by KO. Should be quite a good fight.

The thing is both Chagaev and Ibragimov ARE Ray Austin level fighters that got lucky in world title fights. Was Shannon Briggs even in the top 20 when won his title over Lyakhovich? Was Masakev? Ibragimov fought to a draw with Austin last year.
Austin, Ibragimov, Briggs etc all pretty much on a par with each other so it's not a risk in the slightest to fight another 'champion' when that 'champion' is an absolute bum.
Why would you need to fight an Austin like fighter when the other world champs are no better?
Wlad has to fight guys like Austin because none of the other 'champs' want to meet HIM.
They are all bums, only Wlad is not. The real players in the division are Wladimir, his brother Vitali if he comes back, Sam Peter and Evander Holyfield.
All of the other 'champs' are just a sideshow
Re: Ibragimov-Chagaev unification!
This is good news for me I'm gonna take Chagaev in a close fight with a late stoppage.
One step closer to me having an interest in the heavyweight division again.

Harsh on Chagaev, he is a good solid fighter who can be a player in the HW division. I'd include Oliver McCall in your list as well. For me, it's Peter & Wlad though who are the elite.

It's ok, Peter will sort that out soon enough.

Yeah I did mention McCall in my first post, I'm likeing how he has continued to put a nice run together. His win over Simil Sam has definitely shown that he's serious about another title shot.
Chagaev isn't bad, he did do a good job against Valuev. Not seen much of him apart from that though. I tried to watch his fight with Ruiz but honestly it was hard going, especially being in German as well so I had to just flick through it.
Ibragimov is a bum who actually looked almost Floydesque against Briggs which really sums up just how immobile Briggs is.
I'd like to see Skelton have a crack at either of these.
