What about Floyd? He's got: Cotto, Margarito, Cintron, Clottey. All bonafide 147-pounders that would be itching at getting a shot at the # 1 p4p. Why Hatton? And at what weight would it be? Would Floyd go down to 140? Playing into Hatton's hands? Worse yet, would he go to 140, go to Wembley, and fight with a "hug-friendly" referee? A sure victory for Hatton, to be sure. And then what? Hatton would automatically vault to # 1 p4p? Why?
If you go strictly by division rankings right now, aren't there more logical matches out there to be made?
Just wondering.
Excellent question Titofan, one which no one has really answered yet.Hmm.I see it like this,Hatton is taking the fight because he is running out of options. Hatton is the best.....at 140....at 147,he has not done much, nowhere as much as Mosley,Cotto and Margarito. Hatton knows that he does not have the option of fighting these guys, they are too big and too strong for him. Floyd isnt'.
As for Floyd,it's easy,it makes business sense. Out of the 4 names(Cotto,Shane,Margarito and Hatton_) Hatton is the highest reward,$$$ wise is also the lowest risk. Styles make fights and his is easiest to handle for Floyd. Also,at 147,he looked far from impressive in his last outing against a guy nowhere as slick as Floyd.
This is far from the best v the best. I don't think Hatton is top
5@WW.However,I give some credit to Floyd for taking the fight.
Thank you!! Exactly what I'm trying to get across.
Well deserved....

Re: Why should PBF-Hatton be the next big fight?
It shouldn't be. IMO it is too much of a mismatch to be the next big fight. Hatton doesn't have anything that I can see to give Mayweather the potential troubles some of his last few opponents had Zab and comparable speed and power, Baldomir had size and consistency, stamina, great chin, Oscar had size, speed, and experience. I don't see Hatton having great speed, very much power, great chin, consistency or a whole lot of big fight experience(only had two). Also his stamina of late hasn't been amazing like it used to be, and he definitely didn't look sharp against the counter puncher Collazo.
Re: Why should PBF-Hatton be the next big fight?
CC back brother. ;D ;D What are your thoughts? I like the fact Floyd took the fight, because its a rare occasion in his adventures at 140&147 that he is fighting a dangerous opponent but it still does not detract from the fact that 147 is the hottest it's been for a long time and Floyd cleaning it out would increase his legacy exponentially. It would cement his legacy as an ATG. No one can deny he deserves credit but the other guys mentioned would gain him more credit imo.

Wow,do my eyes decieve me? You actually disagree with something Lil Floyd is doing?!?!?!

I just think Hatton is trying to short-circuit his way to #1 p4p contention with this bid to fight and beat Floyd. Even if he does, at 140, and a "clinch-friendly" ref, it doesn't necessarily vault him over several more deserving fighters, IMO. Some people have mentioned JMM. Others (including me) mention Cotto and Margarito. Why Floyd-Hatton, I keep asking?
Re: Why should PBF-Hatton be the next big fight?
You gotta look at it this way TitoFan. Floyd is at a point right now where he doesn't really belong to any particular division. He can fight anybody from 140 - 154 with no problem of making weight. Hatton just happends to be the biggest name in that weight range. He might not be the best fighter but he is the biggest name and he just had a big win (even if it was against a badly worn and slow Castillo).
I agree with pretty much everything else. I said it once in another thread. Of all the guys he could have fought (Mosley, Cotto, Margarito, Spinks, Clottey, heck even Tito was mentioned as a possibility). Hatton is IMHO the easiest fight for Floyd, especially if it is at 147. And, with the possible exception of Tito or a rematch with DLH, Hatton is by far the biggest money fight for Floyd.
If I can change the subject a little, Does anybody have any clue what the hell is Shane Mosley doing????????? Here is a guy that should be without a doubt the 147 king and all these big fights going on around him and he's just standing there letting opportunity slip by him. WAKE UP SHANE AND TELL YOUR BOY DLH THAT YOU ARE NOT A SPARRING PARTNER AND YOU WANT A BIG NAME FIGHT NOW BEFORE TIME CATCHES UP WITH YOU.

I see your point, Rookie Fan. And a well-made point it is. However, I'm gonna play devil's advocate and question whether in fact Floyd-Hatton would be the biggest money fight right now. It all depends, doesn't it? It depends, for instance, on where the fight is made. If you make it in England, of course it will make huge money. If you make it in Vegas, maybe Margarito would be bigger. And if it was made in Madison Square Garden, what bigger fight than PBF-Cotto?
And for the die-hard fight fan, of which I consider myself included, a PBF fight with either Cotto or Margarito at 147 would be more competitive and more fan-friendly than a fight between Floyd and Hatton at 147. And if Floyd gets lured into a fight with Hatton at 140, particularly in England, he's playing with fire.
Re: Why should PBF-Hatton be the next big fight?
No doubt Margarito would be the toughest fight for PBF, even more so than Mosley or Cotto just because of the physical attributes. Margarito is tall, he's got power and all out bigger and badder than the rest. The problem is he just does not have any big name on his reccord. Ask the average guy, they just don't know who Margarito is. Even if he beats Paul Williams people are just going to say, well who the heck is Paul Williams?
Cotto is now starting te get known to the general public. His fight with Judah didn't just draw a good sized crowed, but it was also a great fight which gave him loads of good publicity. But I'm really concerned on whether he will be able to get passed Margarito.
Hatton has done what nither of the 2 mentioned above has done yet. He cleaned out his division (with a lot of help from Cotto who beat the rest and then moved up). He also took on and beat a future HOFer in KT when he was still relatively close to his prime. He is a lot better known in the general public than the other two and PPV wise he would make much more money.
Bottomline, Cotto and Margarito are pretty much set for the rest of the year, Mosley is.... well I don't know what the hell he is doing honest and Hatton is willing, available and calling him out in national TV. It just makes since in the end.

ther eis no point naming names when they are busy tho titofan...
both hatotn and mayweather are free, i could be wrong but last i read Cotto has to fight williams/magarito next...
mayweather aint retired, once he has whooped hatton he will fight again... cotto or magartio will get their turn to get beat by floyd, don't worry...

Dlh wasnt #2 p4p and it was reguarded as the biggest fight since lewis-tyson...
first.. hatton has been a ring p4per for two years cotto just made it to 10th a month ago margo, mosely isnt even ranked...
second..hatton-mayweather at wembley is far bigger than cotto-mayweather at MSG.....hatton is obviously bigger name than cotto right now or we would be on the cotto-mayweather thread...
el gamo said a good explanation hasnt been made for hatton-mayweather... was you saying the same about Dlh
you might not like or respect hatton but p4p top 10 for two years and highest rated ring fighter that mayweather has to face currently is reason enough.... to all the nonbiased boxing fans... not saying he would beat PBF,Cotto, or margo but saying the hatton isnt even fight worthy??? i wouldnt b*tch and moan if cotto or margo got a shot at mayweather, they are justifiable compitition... so is hatton

Last time I checked, Hatton was NOT # 2 p4p. And that being the case, "the best fighting the best" just doesn't apply here.... now does it.
;)
it does since winky id fighting at LHW and pac is at 130... that leaves guys like hatton and cotto - since hatton is a former champion at WW its the best v the best for that fight...
That's a pretty shaky argument, to say the least. Hatton had one very questionable victory at WW, thought about it better, and scurried back down to Jr. WW. Cotto, meanwhile, is a natural 147-pounder and is also undefeated.
Now, and try to follow here.... what makes more sense: a 140-pound champion fighting a 147-pound champion? Or two 147-pound champions fighting each other?
was a time when everyone in the world wanted the 160 chamop (hopkins) to fight the 175 champ (rjj) - bet u were one of the ones wanting it too;)
..... and that supports your argument how?
:headscratch:
But no, I was never keen on Hopkins vs Jones Jr. While I admire BHop as a fighter, I've never liked his fighting style. And 15 pounds is a lot to lose or make up.
Seriously Preme.... blind fanaticism aside. Doesn't it make more boxing sense for Floyd to go after OTHER champions in his own weight division?
because there were other champions at hopkins weight at the same time... everyone wnated hopkisn to gain 15 pounds to fight RJJ whislt there were other champs at middle weight...
Yet now there are two undisputed champions with only 7 pounds the difference - both champions at 147... and since all the other ones are busy there apart form mosley who is a non champion, you tell me what makes sense...

This has nothing to do with me not liking or respecting Hatton. In reality, I both like and respect him. He's a classy guy, in and out of the ring. But truth be told.... I dislike his fighting style. I think if he fought with a ref with enough balls to call his clinching and mauling tactics, things might be a little different.
Your point on DLH is invalid. DLH may not have been p4p #2 at the time of the Floyd fight but (and I hate to admit this, as I'm not a DLH fan) he's by FAR a bigger name than Hatton is or will be in any conceivable future. Thus, the huge draw.
And the fact remains..... Floyd is supposedly on this quest to be a "legend." Hey legend, there's some good and dangerous fighters in your OWN damn division that you haven't even bothered to take a second look at. Deal with them, and THEN go on your little quest for immortality.

As of yet cotto has showed almsot no interest in fighting mayweather - if he wnats him why isnt he calling him out? he does't have toslag him off and get into a verbal war like ahtton has, but there is no reason why he can't come out in public and call mayweather out, or question him fornot taking the fight - hell he just whooped a guy like no one whooped him before, mayweather couldn't finish him inside the distance, had some shakey moments - but cotto has kept queit on the subject of a mayweather fight.

It's not really Cotto's style to call guys out. He has never done so in the past and I highly doubt he would change that in the future. And even if he did call Floyd out,I don't think it would make a difference, not yet anyway. Margarito called Floyd out more times than Hatton,it didn't work for him. Heck,he even called FLoyd a faggot for not fighting him in an interview, and it still didn't work.

That's a fair enough question, and I'll answer it. If you've followed Cotto throughout his career, you'll note that he has never made it a habit of calling out potential future opponents. He always says the same thing... that he'll fight whomever they put in front of him. This may be endearing to some and maddening to others, but at least he's been consistent on this point throughout his career. Why change now? Hatton's calling out Floyd isn't going to all of a sudden change Miguel's way of doing things. (Secretly, I wish for once he would, but what the hell). Also, I gotta admit... Miguel has to have his sights right now on the winner of the Margarito-Williams fight. Assuming Floyd beats Hatton and Cotto beats the winner of Margarito-Williams....... THEN we might be looking at a mega Cotto-PBF fight.
Re: Why should PBF-Hatton be the next big fight?
thats cool, i was going after cotto for not calling him out... but you gotta look at it like this, mayweater is the shit, he is the p4p king - shit the chip hes got on his shoulder prolly has its own fucking pillow... So, cottos style or not, that fight aint gunna happen unless cotto calls him out, mayweather sure as hell aint going after cotto, he "retired" whislt not one single eprson in the world believed it was true or he would last long, you are gunna have to call him out to get him in the ring...
since cotto aint doing that, magartio is busy, citron is busy to aint he? that leaves hatton...
I don;t really like hatton, shit if im honest the most part of me wants this fight to happen so we can get rid of ricky for good, or get rid of his tiresome excuses and the hype... but end of, right now he deserves the fight more than anyone else whos free right now..
