I will never praise that style.
The intentional holding in boxing has to be stopped it's ruining the sport IMO.
Some people may like it, but IMO it's cheating straight up.
I can understand a fighter holding on for dear life, what I can't
condone is using it as a defensive strategy.
No cheating is Listons blatant eye gouges
Cheating is Holyfields at least once a fight headbut
And even then,if the ref didnt see it,werent cheating
Those are ALSO cheating.
When you hold excessively you get warned, and then you should lose points.
A warning aint a point deduction
Understood, however if you continue to excesively hold AFTER you get warned
you should lose points.

Up to the ref

Re: Why is Hopkins praised for his style and Hatton crucified?
It worked didn't it? Winky wasn't able to get off as he would've otherwise. The footwork with the clinching and quick hands would have been enough to give any fighter trouble.
Re: Why is Hopkins praised for his style and Hatton crucified?
Neither guy should be criticized. The ref is the guy who is in the ring to maintain control in a fight. If a point is taken or not is up to the referee.
Re: Why is Hopkins praised for his style and Hatton crucified?
I don't like hopkins fighting style when he holds. I just don't like holders at all.
Re: Why is Hopkins praised for his style and Hatton crucified?
CC.... I asked myself the same thing. Just like I asked myself how wlad was praised when he held Peter about 90 times in their fight and when Akinwande did it to Lewis, he was crucified and dq'ed and never taken seriously again.
Great Post

:beat:
all the time just hatin on Wlad....Sam wasn't doing shit trying to get out of those clinches and let them fight again I WANT Sam Peter to fight Wlad again so Sam can get knocked the fuck out and all his fucking fans can stop blaming Wlad for Sam's lack of effort in that fight....and yeah it was a lack of effort because if you have someone hurt (from punches behind the head) you finish them off.....but apparently Sam can't do that....he hasn't KO'd anyone (legit) since Taurus Sykes in 2005....the Julius Long one in 2006 IMO doesn't count because Julius didn't want anything to do with Sam or anyone else that night

How did I know you were going to appear? lol
Re: Why is Hopkins praised for his style and Hatton crucified?
Wladimir did nothing Lennox Lewis hadn't done vs Sam Peter...and hey if you get away with certain things you'll use them to your advantage....for example Evander and his head, Tyson and elbowing guys in the throat, and Rocky Marciano hitting guys when they were down, in the back of the head etc.
SMART Fighters use what the refs give them
Re: Why is Hopkins praised for his style and Hatton crucified?
I don't have any idea who is praising Hopkins style. As soon as this fight was made most people couldn't stop talking about how boring it was going to be. So much so that Hopkins addressed that very issue. Hopkins style is excruciating to watch.

I never would have thought that this would be effective against Winky, does this mean that Hatton has a better chance against the welters than previously thought?
who praise B-Hop i despice tha piece of shit

After what he did to the PR flag I would have paid anything to see him KTFO, but that was just promotion and he got his ass ran out of the building by the Rican's anyways, but you have to respect what he's done in the ring. As far as praise goes I consider being regarded as one of the all time great MW's pretty high praise but that's just me. ;)
Re: Why is Hopkins praised for his style and Hatton crucified?
I must be blind, cos I don't find anything ugly about how either Hopkins OR Hatton fights. I don't know, maybe it's what your eye has been trained on. People who grew up on Ali, Ray Leonard or Pernell Whitaker may see the inside game differently to people who grew up on Hagler, Benn, Duran or indeed Hopkins or Hatton.

If I could click you again then I would.
Those are my sentiments too. Excessive holding is inexcusable in a 12 round fight. If you are not conditioned to go 3 minutes per round then points should be docked for the holding incurred. If it is a strategy then its a drain on the fans who have paid good money to see something interesting, and again, points should be docked.

I won't praise Hopkins for his style. By the way... Sugar Ray Robinson applied the same holding tactics. :detective:
