Calzaghe does not deserve that record; he was not a legitimate champ until he beat Lacy. No way does he have any business beating Louis' record of 25 defenses as UNDISPUTED champ.
You're a misguided fool if you truly believe he was not legit until he beat Lacy. The only fighters that he could have fought that would have added anything to his super-middle career were Sven Ottke, who retired shortly after Calzaghe came to prominence, and Roy Jones Junior, who was already a light-heavyweight by the time Calzghe came to beat Eubank and claim the belt.

Calzaghe was definitely a legit fighter, but in all honesty people are misguided fools if they equal defending the heavyweight championship of the world with defences of the WBO Super Middleweight title. That is not to say that Calzaghe's feat is not astonishing - just that comparisons with Louis' record are pretty pointless.
And yes, I know the press - and Warren/Calzaghe - lap it up, but boxing fans should know better. And no matter what you think of Lacy, it does make more sense to count 'defences of the Ring belt' - which Calzaghe only won after that fight.
(Now, dont even get me started on Ottke's 21 defences... Can we at least agree that that feat is not worthy of being mentioned along with Louis?)

Sorry, I wasn't trying to say that Calzaghe's defences deserve to be put up there next to Louis record, I just felt that it was very wrong to say that Calzaghe was not legit.
And we can agree on Ottke :p

Well, no reason to say sorry :)
And I agree to all of your 3 statements...
Also, I would cc you for the Dunne thread, if only I had enough posts. Now I have to settle for plainly writing 'thanks'.
Unfortunately I dont have the option tonight of watching the fight myself, but I know that I will be reading your thread sometime tomorrow, and hopefully the rbr will be a pretty good substitute (they usually are).

You really think HBO would be interested in putting together a fightcard around Clinton Woods ???
Glen Johnson is a better fighter, more exciting to watch, is American and has beaten both of Americas best light heavies of the past 5 or 6 years and HBO and Showtime don't care about him, what chance would Woods have? ???
It's basically the same as asking why Adam Woodywatt (Ian Beale from Eastenders) hasn't moved on to bigger and better things and taken Hollywood by storm ::** :D
;D
Just a point of information, Johnson is Jamaican. But I take your point.

This is where I have to intercede, to say that the current Roy Jones would be able to beat Woods at present is crazy talk. Quite frankly, he looked vulnerable in his last two fights, and before then hadn't won in three. If Jones went in there today even an average champion like Woods would be able to outmuscle and outwork him. Jones is shot, and until he proves he still has any sort of quality, then Woods would gain no credibility from a revenge win, just a bit of satisfaction.
As for his career, he has been trying to take the Ricky Hatton bandwagon to international fame, but without exposure on undercard fights, then he'll never sell anything in the states. The reason he's fighting in the UK is just cause this is where he can sell tickets. Would hope he improves his opposition in coming fights though.
To say that Roy Jones could beat Woods is crazy talk???? You've got to be kidding. I meean maybe Woods would win, but when did he become some elite fighter who blows people over. Sure Roy jones has seen much better days, but I think he easily has a good chance at beating Woods again, simply due to styles. Watch their first fight, it's as one sided a fight as one will ever see. No matter how much woods has improved and Jones has declined, to say that Roy couldn't beat him again is what would be crazy talk... Clinton Woods is not some great fighter, he's very good these days, but still very beatable against an elite fighter.
Re: Clinton Woods: WTF is he doing with his career ???
Clinton is a good fighter but unfortunately, "good" fighters positioned as world champions is a huge problem in boxing.
