Well he makes comments which are questionable every once in a while just as all of us do. People forget,he was once one of the top commentators and has been watching and learning about boxing longer than most of us have been alive. He knows his stuff. And he enjoys boxing fights,I've seen plenty where he is waxing lyrical about the boxing match, but in this day and age, where boxing has much more competition with regards to it's fanbase(mma etc) he just wants to see more excitement. If you're on HBO,you're there to win AND entertain. Fans aren't paying $50 for nothing. They want entertainment for their hard earned money. That's the other side of the coin anyway.
I love Larry. All those people that diss him will miss him when he retires. He has charm. He has given us LOADS of memories. Him and Lampley throwing the HW paper titles in the bin,Hatton licking his hand and gelling Larry's hair,Larry grilling B Hop after the fight with Hakkar etc.

Roy Jones putting Larry Merchant in his place.

I don't think this is completely true.
Merchant was a huge fan of Pernell Whitaker, and I've heard him give respect to other non-brawlers.

In most cases from what i've seen he disrespects fighters who are not brawling he comes out with nonsense like wake me up when the fight is over.

Right... But he also has a job to do, which is largely promoting the sport to a younger audience and trying to draw new fans to boxing. Pernel Whittaker was also an exciting fighter if you ask me.. He had a very pleasing style to watch considering he was a light hitter and generally wasn't in tooth and nail type fights.. Truth is, that Merchant may very well appreciate a slow paced technical boxing match in his own right, but if a first time viewer tunes in to hear him praising fighters for what that person see's as boring, they are going to think, "yep, this is boxing, and I don't like it."

I know what you mean man..the pair of Jim and Larry is just the voice of 'Boxing'. I can't describe it any other way. You don't know how dissapointed I always am when I turn on ITV, Sky Sports or Setanta and hear the english commentating..Just doesn't sound right.
Re: Larry Merchant is THE MAN. Period.
That was good tv when it happened and I think Larry was ready to Roll on that dude.
I have due respect for Merchant and what he has gifted to the sport but sometimes he comes off like the crazy gooky ol' codger sitting on his porch yelling at the paperboy.
If I had to pick, give me Merchant well over "I see ghost punches" Jim Lampley.Larry was also savage in his berating and bias against hopkins although not so much latley.
Re: Larry Merchant is THE MAN. Period.
The man may talk slow, but he has some pent up agression. Lol, As bad as Larry can be, he has those moments that redeem him. I think this is one of them. CC Gamo for the hilarious clip.
