I think people expect too much out of the contender fighters and expect that they are supposed to be world beaters. They participate in a tournament and receive a reward for winning and just the participation. It's a business and they get a big jump in their business from the exposure. I don't think Mora deserves a title shot, but most titlest are more interested in high profile fighters than they are tough competetion. He's fairly high profile and will draw a larger purse for both fighters because of it. Overall I don't think he's overrated in skill, cause he's not widely thought of as being skilled. However he is overrated in proportion to his skill and popularity. He's obviously more popular than skilled, so I can't think of a word to describe it better than overrated, but it just doesn't seem to fit.????
Maybe we need a new word to describe it. Anyone got an idea????
???
Hyped??? ;D
Overhyped!!!!!
That's it. Fits perfectly in my opinion.

But overhyped by whom though?
Certainly not anybody on this board, or I suspect any other boxing fan board except the Snake Pit.
Certainly not by the commentators either who always give an impartial and accurate assessment of a fighter.
He won the first Contender series which obviously put him in the public consciousness and now his fights get televised. That's hardly a case of being overhyped. I've never heard a single boxing commentator or analyst say that he is a future champion of the world, have any of you?
I think his boxing ability is underatted by the vast majority of hardcore fight fans who would have no qualms about rating a fighter whom they had never heard of let alone seen fight above him in the middleweight rankings.
He's a decent slick boxer who is on the fringe of breaking into the top 10 middleweights and is almost within reach of a world title shot. That's not overrating him that's just stating the facts.
I've never heard a single person ever say he's a future world champ or a p4p star, he is what he is, an ermerging talent in the middleweight division who may or may not become a factor in the division.
I've never heard any boxing analysist ever claim anything more.
Re: Sergio Mora Overrated
Mora will be OK if he fights more. I had him winning by a round last night, and he basically gave the first three rounds away. He's got a strange style...he's rangy and a boxer, but he does his best fighting using his handspeed and odd angles on the inside. Usually fighters like that are pretty busy or powerful, but he's neither. He picks his spots, and when he lets his hands go, he looks pretty good and lands accurately, but then he goes into a shell for a while. It's a bit puzzling.

The expectations were/are too high and the Contender people tried to make the kid run before he could crawl. You don't win a softball tournament and then think you are going play and beat the Rockies or the Indians. Unrealistic expectations, if you know what I mean. I hope this removes any "I am ready for a world title shot" from Mora's head and I hope he goes about his career the way any other fighter does and that is work your way up. I think that Alfonso Gomez has benefited more than anyone else because he is going about his career in the right way. Alfonso is staying busy and he is taking fights to help him gain some more experience in the ring. Sergio lacks experience big time. Do I think he is all that? I like him and I think he has potential but his lack of inactivity is killing him. I hope this is a wake up call. He needs to put his foot down and tell the Contender people to stop trying to get him title shots he does not deserved or is not prepared to take. I said he was not ready for Taylor and I know he is not ready for Pavlik. It's a no brainer.
I agree with your summation. He's not ready for the top level, he might not ever be, but don't throw him to the wolves. Gomez is being mentored and groomed for a solid career. While I doubt he will ever be a long reigning champ, he will probably get a shot and have a very solid and well paid career. Whether he ever becomes a champion or remains a perinnial contender, you can still earn a solid living off of hard work, and likability.
I don't agree with everyone who thinks these fighters are overrated. I think they are as advertised....contending..... They are trying to make a career out of boxing and they got an early jump in the publicity department. Most of them are solid average fighters. More power to them to get a decent payday. Most of the opponents on FNF's have little experience and usually fight on short notice, don't even train full time, etc... So what if you take a few of those guys and give them a shot to be a full time fighter.
I like the show, generally like the fighters. Mora is one of my least favorite, but I don't hate the guy. Just feel the "overhyped" title fits.

See my earlier comments. I generally agree with you. Which is why I was looking for another word to replace "overrated" which I feel doesn't fit.
Overhyped is the winner of my tournament of words to replace "Overrated" for contender stars. Now how's that for irony.
;D

And I think he's underrated by boxing fans who don't hold contender contestants in high regards.
Imagine that ;)

So Pavlik is the world destroyer now for stopping Jermain Taylor who hasnt looked much better then Mora looked last night and at times even worse ???
Just starting up some debates here :)

Great sharp point ;) But when You lable anyone or anything as"best" It should be the highest of calibur among the many. CC for lawer-istic turn Lol.
Marketing indeed is often known to take libertys with accuracy and facts.Semantics and subjectivity abound. If your one of the "best" Middles you can climb in with any of the top 10 and hold your own. There has to be a cutoff somewhere. The best are high calibur....The rest are "contenders".....or pretenders
