Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
That's okay. I was just generalizing, then again maybe you're right, but can you say the same for everyone else? There's a few guys around here that really know there stuff, everyone else just has opinion or is interested in what's going on in boxing world now.

Yea you can't put match ups on the main board anymore which is a shame.
Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
Man then this might take a long time to get some opinions but yet again Ice you know a lot about the web know were i can get some Tunny fights they used to have more on the you tube but now they do not they only have the Dempsey fight i guess Tunney has a copyright or something.
Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
I'd favor Tunney, I think he'd be to slick.
Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
Yeah I know what you mean, it can be hard to find fight footage if you look solely on the internet. I was fortunate enough to find a DVD in a bargain bin for a few bucks that contained 40 clips, a bunch of them are hard to find. Among the treasures were a couple other Gene Tunney fights. His fight with Carpentier, and the one with Tom Heeney. The Tom Heeney fight was perfect execution on Gene's part.
Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
Do you have any of Gene Tunney fights when he fought Greb that is a Tunney fight i want to see if they have it recored i don't think they do though. Also if you have them on your computer or burnt and can send them to me or give me the name of the tape either would be great if you could.
Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
I'm afraid not, the only fights I have of Tunney are the two that I mentioned along w/ his fights with Dempsey. You ought to look up a tape collector, that I can't really help you there. I might be able to ask a friend if he knows any tape collectors.
You might want to check out the boxing bittorrent sites and megadownload.net/google first just in case you haven't already.
Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
Tunneys crowning glory was indeed winning the championship (conspicuosly) against Jack Dempsey, he had four wins an d a loss to Harry Greb, thus showing he was a highly effective in his era.
However i feel that his era was trademarked by rough tough sluggers such as Dempsey and Greb and that Louis skill wise was above those men in terms of skill. In addition his calculated punching power was a different scientific formula than what Tunney encountered. Joe wins for me, although I liked the fighting marine and his theory on the sweet science.
Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
Tunney also beat excellent boxers such as Loughran and Carpentier, both of those fighters had the footwork and skills that would have given Louis a headache, but I don't think that either of them would have been too much for him.
Looking at the records, I don't consider Louis's opposition being better, the Baer brothers, Carnera, Tony Galento, an old James Braddock and an old Jack Sharkey. His punching power depended on getting set to punch, and being in the range to land his punch. However he wasn't slow and like Tunney, Louis would pick his shots. He was a quick counterpuncher especially with his short hard punches.
Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
Tunney is one of the great technical boxing HW's. I think he could box to a close UD, maybe have to get off the mat to do it though. Unfortunate he retired at 31 there were some good fights on the horizon.
Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
Louis was a very calculating fighter, always closing the distance to land his very fast and very hard combinations. He was not quick on his feet and he did not vary his game plan. Tunney was the smarter fighter, more mobile, and a very underrated puncher. I think that he would, as Conn did, give Louis fits with his movement.
But he would bring a few extras to the game that Conn simply did not possess. Tunney was a tremendous body puncher, and not in the modern sense of wading in and taking one to give one. If you read the accounts of his fights there is frequent mention made of both his left hook to the body and his straight right to the body. This would slow Louis in a way that Conn's arm punches could not. Also, Tunney was a much, much harder puncher than Conn. Again, in the stories about his fights, his powerful left hook is referred to nearly as much as his straight right. Dempsey said that the hardest blow he ever took was a right to the heart from Tunney at the end of the "Long Count" round.
My feeling is that Tunney stops Louis in the late rounds of a 15 round fight. Remember, the Dempsey fights were 10s and Dempsey said he did not believe that he could have finished a 15 round fight.
Oh, one more thing. Tunney had a ramrod of a jab. Sonny Liston was known for his hard jab and many writers of that era said it was "almost as hard as Tunney's."

Re: Gene Tunney vs Joe Louis
Joe Loius pulverises Tunney for 15 rounds.
