Boxing as a sport outdates nearly all other forms of competition and athletic endevours. This alone is an indication that the group you speak of, lobbying for boxing to dispand are outnumbered greatly by suporters, competitors and a large number of the general public.
Boxing for hundreds of years has provided a source of hope for people in disadvantaged situations. Where other sports require a team (supported by consistent sources of revenue,) boxing is an individual, low budget sport whwere one can achieve as much as the work to attain.
Should boxing be banned do you really think that would help?
Hundreds if not thousands of youths and men train every day in the British Isles alone. A ban would merely force their sport of choice underground, where injury statistics would greatly increase due to the lack of supervision and adequate medical advisors.
Why not work in co-ordination with the main men in the sport now to improve safety standards and make the current game better rather than ban it and create a monster.
Holy shit... So wait...
Read all of this thread... Now go back and read that article...
I think we just took those naysayers to school...
No seriously they just got taken to school.
CC's all around to ya all! ;D ;) ;D :D

I am a huge American football fan. :cheerleader:(Patriots still undefeated at 10-0) Since 1931 American footabll has recorded over 1600 related deaths while Boxing, a worldwide sport has recorded over 500 in 100 years. That's over 3 times more. Football players aren't punching each other in the head but they are causing broken necks, backs and brain damage. This argument will always save the sport of boxing. More people die per year hunting for God's sake...
Not only pro, but college football as well has a higher number of deaths per 100,000 people than boxing. More people die/get injured driving a car on a daily basis than boxing has in a year yet you see them still contently cashing in on newer models and higher gas prices. How many people die/get permantly injured when a surgeon messes up a surgery? Tell them to work on their stuff before coming after something else.

Re: BMA calls for boxing & UFC ban... (Can a MOD sticky this please)
If boxing and the UFC are banned they will just go underground and continue without any regulation. Why not ban super size fast food, cigarettes, etc., they are responsible for more deaths than anything. It's the typical knee-jerk reaction. Instead of accepting the fact that combat sports will continue to exist and try to make them safer and better regulated the medical community instead sticks its head in the sand and hopes legislation will solve the problem by eliminating it.
