Great post have your 4th CC on me.
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
I consider him a great fighter at lightweight and lower, but not at 140+ yet. I would consider him an enigma at this point as I want to see how he handles a bigger stronger guy like Cotto and see how/if he can overcome adversity. That will determine if he true all time greatness material and I will carve it into stone myself if he does it.
With what he has accomplished up to now, people will look back with fondness of him but many boxing historians will question the quality of his opponents, especially in the past 3-4 years. They will give him a place, but it will not be a place with someone of his talent deserves.
He deserves an all time top 5 super featherweight, top 10 Lightweight ranking right now I think. But his jr. welterweight and Welterweight adventures will actually hinder how he is viewed in the future unless he Meets up with the toughest Welterweights. If he does not, they will just say he coasted his way to other belts.

Deanrw that sums it up very well cc
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
I consider Floyd a great. But right now he's still at or near his peak, and there's some very good potential matchups out there to be exploited. If Floyd fights and beats some of those fighters out there, I'd consider him even greater still.
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
There is no doubt Floyd is an incredibly talented fighter. But he hasnt been in the position that many great fighters in the past have like regaining a title, avenging a loss, getting off the canvas to win, or making a mark on the sport that goes beyond ring accomplishments. Im not saying that has to lose a fight to be considered an all time great, though eventually he probably will as do most fighters cause after all he is only human. But, his career is not yet complete imo. I often wonder where Tyson would stand in the history books if he retired 37-0 before tasting defeat. There would probably be people saying that he was a top 3 heavyweight of all time today. Can Floyd retire after one or two more fights and be considered an atg, yes. Can he retire now and be considered an atg, sure, but I think its a matter of opinion and there are unanswered questions for some.
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
Man just have a CC on me for the time spent writing that up. I knew every bit of information you wrote about (barring some of his past opponents winning streaks) but I still read all of it lol.
Mayweather I think will be another guy more appreciated when he is gone. Even if some people don't see him as an all time great at light W or welter surely that can't take away from him being an undeniable ATG at every other weight he's competed in?? He has almost screwed himself over with critics by moving up the weight divisions and having more ambition. Something he's always accused of not having

He was world boxing champion in 1985 winning the IBF super lightweight world title and also won the WBF Welterweight division 1993, IBO Light Welterweight (aka Super Lightweight) division in 1994, IBO Lightweight division in 1995.
Ellis earned early success as an amateur, winning the Australian Bantamweight Championship before turning professional in 1983. The young fighter, now fighting in the Junior Lightweight division, went through 1983 and 1984 undefeated, finishing 1984 by winning the Commonwealth title from Zambian, John Sichula.
His rapid progress reached a peak on February 15, 1985 in Melbourne when he challenged the Korean, Hwan Kil Yuh, for the IBF Junior Lightweight title. After 15 gruelling rounds, Ellis was the new world champion.
However boxing can be a fickle sport, and his meteoric rise up the ranks was equally rapid on the way down. Just five months later, Lester Ellis, after one successful title defence against Rod Sequenan, lost the world crown to another Victorian, Barry Michael. Ellis fought on for a number of years and won another world title of sorts by securing the WBF welterweight belt.
An aggressive, hard puncher, he was always an attractive drawcard in Australia.
He attempted suicide on 27 May 2006 by attempting to jump in front of several cars and a train. He is currently facing three counts of assault and one count of affray.

Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
:coolclick: for a well thought out post buddy. I for one consider PBF as a great boxer. Only factor is how great? I put him at a push top 20 all time just maybe....not 100 percent sure without making a list but around there anyway. Which is a great feat in itself...just do not see him up with the leonards, robinsons, durans, ali's of this world thats all.
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
Initially after his win over Hatton I was a bit hastey in saying how great he is. When you look at Leonard, he fought Duran 3 times, Hearns twice and Hagler once. Although technically Mayweather is just as good as Leonard, until he has a mass of wins over greats, he can't go too high on the list. His fights have been very carefully chosen for him, but it is for the same reason that it is more difficult now to go down as a great in boxing because of this.
Ray Robinson had his first defeat to La Motta after 40 fights and avenged it, christ he fought three times in that month! He then went almost 100 fights with just three draws before losing at the age of 30 and after that he only really struggled with winning fighters 50-5 etc... and he was 40 years of age.
Mayweather might be a great, but it is actually impossible for him to be the greatest.
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
Just a question, is Hagler higher on people's lists than Mayweather? He is on mine.
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
I have decided that from here on out PBF is a topic I will avoid because if you make a valid point that is proven or not it ends up in a senseless argument and god forbid you even post you don't like his haircut...then you are a HATER automatically...
But ICB you made some valid points in your post and got a CC coming from me in 24
