hopefully like one of his former opponents like SRL can come and help him
it really sad
Good point I would think Leonard or even as some said Trinidad or Cotto could help out. They must know his condition and situation. Sh@t even Don King could help him out. He is a legend, and he has done enough in his lifetime that his family should not have to worry about finances. It is a sadly common story though. That was a tough article to read, but it needs to be heard.Quote:

Even to a ten year old, it was obvious this guy was special. I don't think fighters today have an obligation to help him, but those from his era could do some kind of after-dinner speaking tour to help out maybe. Those with the biggest obligation are the people who lived off his earnings, without giving anything back. And they were probably his best friends at one point.
Well, i have taken a few moments to let that sink in. Surely The WBC and WBA owe it to their past champions to have some sort of fund on hand to cover such circumstances? If both Tinidad and Cotto donated just 5% of their earnings in their next fight then Benitez could be saved.
That is a fantastic sentiment, but a naive one. Do you honestly think that Wilfredo Benitez means anything to the WBA and WBC now? He Makes no money, so now he is redundant as far as they are concerned. Keep giving sc's out, however, as they really suit you.
I remember watching him fight Matthew Hilton I think in 86. He was totally shot and his reflexes were totally gone even before the fight. The knockout was a devastating one he suffered yet he continued to fight on. He suffered another brutal knockout against another fighter about two years later. He was not even a shell of his former self yet commission after commission let him continue to fight.
We see this sort of thing taking place with Holyfield now. With every fight he takes, he will lose more of his future even when he wins a fight.
Yea but i can not see Holeyfeild turning out that way he still sounds ok i just do not know why he does not retire and enjoy his castle.
Yeah he sounds OK now, but the damage may already be done. Once the "drunk" sets in, it gets worse and worse even when they no longer fight. It could already be too late with the wars he has been in, time will tell. Continuing to fight will only lesson his chances of getting away from the game intact.Quote:

Too much glory. I think if he hadn't burst Tyson's bubble twice, I believe he would have retired long ago. Lennox, thuogh brilliant, was not the conquest Tyson was. Maybe he still feels he can carry on, but even ordinary fighters would beat him now.
CC back. I know what you mean. He seemed like superman in there at times. He has so much money he can live it big and actually enjoy it now if he wanted to. I just think boxing has become so ingrained in his life and he cannot figure out what to do outside of it.Quote:
