It's hardly "pathetic" to take on the most economically viable opponent, especially when the dollars and cents are dramatically different from what he could get fighting guys already at 140. Honestly, Hatton will have to fight guys coming up in weight to get big fights (possible exception is Victor Ortiz, but he'll have to get a few more wins under his belt before he is economically viable). I suspect he'll eventually fight Juan Diaz, and I think that'd be a hell of a fight. Maybe Katsidis too if Kats can keep his momentum going.
Manny and Hatton have already made tons of money. What about the guys waiting in the wings, solid fighters trying to score a big name opponent to give themselves a good purse and make their name bigger? Hatton and Pacman were not big names at one time also, but someone gave them a shot. This is what is wrong with boxing. Everyone seems to be out for taking the easy ride, instead of proving their worth.
CC for ya, good point and very true... I will say I can understand why a fighter with a fast paced rugged style would chase the biggest money fights first and foremost... However, when two weight classes and about 10 other deserving contenders or champions stand in the way, it's becomes a shame for the sport that fight's like this are discussed. And it's not just the fact that it could possibly happen, what bothers me about it all is that it is planned out ahead of time, when Pac still has a megafight in front of him, and has never fought above 130 in his life. How the hell can this really be in the works when noone knows how Pac would fair at lightweight ??? I mean it's not inconceivable that Manny will move up and become a great lightweight. It's a long shot imo, I couldn't see him beating Diaz for the life of me... But, if it happens, then more power to him, and the sport. Not to mention that a Hatton Pacquiao fight would be a WAY bigger fight, should Pac prove he is a legitimate lightweight(and no, beating David Diaz doesn't prove this). IF he does succeed at 135, THEN Hatton and his camp should be looking towards getting the fight made. Not to mention by the time Pac would have beaten Marquez and Diaz, Hatton could have taken on Witter or Maglinaggi. At this point though, the fact that the fight is in the works, is pathetic... It simply allows each fighter to avoid the real threats, and waste months and months with nothing but a soft touch tune up type fight to hype this farce.

If he beats JMM he needs to fight Guzman and Juan Diaz rather than chasing the $$$. Fact is he looked aweful against Barrera who wasnt exactly at his peak and imo lost to JMM first time round so moving up to fight one of the very best LWW is just crazy talk.
Amen to that. It is at the point of being just plain stupid now. The reason we see the UFC gaining fans is because of the obvious corrupted money game boxing has become. 2007 was a year of promise with good matchups like Cotto/Mosley, Pavlik/Miranda, Pavlik/Taylor, Calzaghe/Kessler...etc. All this weight jumping is just sad and Hatton and Pacman should be ashamed of themselves for being sellouts. Yes I said it!

I see what you're saying, but honestly Pacman and Hatton don't owe it to anybody to take significantly less money to fight worthy but not economically viable contenders. They owe it to themselves and their families to take the biggest fights available. It's true that top guys gave them their shots, but only after each made themselves top money draws. Kostya went to England to fight Hatton because Hatton had become big in the UK and therefore promised a big purse for him in return. And let's not pretend that Hatton and Pacman duck anyone...both have fought tough competition. I mean, Hatton called out PBF when no one gave him a prayer of winning. Hatton probably gets 8 figures to fight Pacman...what does he get by fighting Paulie? $3 or $4 million? He probably triples that amount or better by taking on Pacman. And, honestly, I don't think it's necessarily a mismatch. I'd expect Roach to train Pacman to fight a stick and move sort of fight, taking advantage of his foot/hand speed, and if he were to stick to that gameplan and not let Hatton turn things into a brawl I could see Pacman winning a decision. I think it'd be a pretty cracking affair, honestly.

Don't get me wrong, fellas, I don't disagree that I'd like to see Hatton mix it up with Paulie or Witter, but you have to put yourself in the shoes of the fighter and their handlers. You can take a tough, risky fight with Paulie and maybe pull in $3 or $4 million, or you can fight Pacman and have one of the biggest events of the year pulling in $12-15 million. What in the world is wrong with taking that fight? And, again, while Hatton's size is certainly an advantage, Pacman could give him fits if he fights a stick and move sort of fight using his foot/hand speed to his advantage. I'd favor Hatton, but I wouldn't count out Pacman by any stretch and could envision him winning a points decision.

LOL no. I actually got dinged twice. I don't give SC's unless it was a personal attack. I see like everyone is entitled to an opinion and if I don't like what they say, so be it.
I gave you a CC just to neutralize them :-)
Re: Ricky Hatton serious about fighting Manny.......(pathetic)
I actually don't think it would be that much of a mismatch.
Re: Ricky Hatton serious about fighting Manny.......(pathetic)
Also, to add to what I've said, we're all assuming a fight with Paulie or Witter doesn't happen before a Pacman fight. It sounds like the plan would be for this to happen at the end of the year, so he'd probably fight at least twice before then.

Exactly, Hatton has the size advantage, true, but Pacman could conceivably give him fits with his hand and foot speed.

Yea but don't kid yourself... As long as Hatton's camp are seriously anticipating a Pac fight in 2008, you think they are going to put him in with Witter or Malignaggi first?? Hell I'm not sure he'd beat those guys, not to mention how he would look against either of their styles..
Re: Ricky Hatton serious about fighting Manny.......(pathetic)
You have to ask your self who is out of their mind more if this did take place...Hatton for fighting such a smaller man or Pacquiao for thinking he can actually jump that high up?...this is like PBF jumping to SMW and fighting Calzaghe....Yes your good but there are limits of Nature that noone can over come

You may be right. But, on the other hand, it certainly isn't a given that Pacman will get by JMM, so they might not wish to count their chickens and assume the fight will happen. I don't think he'll fight Witter. While the fight would probably be big in the UK, there would be about zero interest in that fight in the US, and Hatton is interested in making a big name over here, so I don't see that one happening, and the reasons are understandable from the business side of things. I could see the Paulie fight coming off, though. We'll see. I just don't see anything "pathetic" about him taking on Pacman given the $$$ involved. The purse dwarfs anything else he could make, sans a fight with De La Hoya.

And if Mayweather didn't KO him, he'd probably be fighting DLH next. It just seems like a bitch move to fight Pac, especially considering most would want to bounce back and reestablish themselves after a loss.. To do that he needs to beat a world class fighter his own size. If he doesn't think he can do it, then why fight at all.
