It's his mandatory so he has no choice really. I don't think it's that,I just think Ponce really is tired and wants a break. If the $$$ is right, somewhere down the line,Ponce would fight him again and even though I'm a fan of Daniel's,I think Gerry wins the rematch.
i'm surprised that YOU would think that. personally i would have it as a repeat of the first fight but gerry seems to be extremely keen on having that rematch so maybe he knows something we don't and i'm hoping it's just not about the money. yeah, he just might surprise us.
Why are you surprised? I call it how I see it. I think if Gerry lets his hands go more and avoids Ponce's bombs/takes them as he did the first time,he wins.Remember,ALOT of knowledgeable writers had Gerry winning the first fight. They prefered his counter punching, which was harder, had more effect and cleaner than any of Ponce's shots. However,Ponce threw alot more.
i thought you'd go with ponce in a rematch cos you've been goin' about how you find it difficult to give gerry the decision with such a discrepancy of punch output in their first fight. so you think gerry could do better next around? personally i don't think so.
Yeah, that's the only reason why I would have given Daniel the W in the first fight,he threw and landed so many more BUT Gerry's punches were soooooo much more cleaner,he was more accurate and if you didn't look at the ko records going into the fight, you would think that Gerry was the harder hitter.
I think a rematch would be close and if Penelosa has 1 big weakness,it's that he just does not let his hands go enough. It would probably be his last big fight so I think he would give it his all and probably win.Man,Penelosa is 1 tough tough tough dude though.Has he ever been down in his entire career? I think I've read he's been down once!

i really don't recall any fight where he's been down before. you're right about the flaw in his game. he just doesn't take too many chances which is one of the reasons why he's so tough to take out. it's always been like that with gerry and has nothing to do with his age, that's why i don't think he can change anything this late in his career. but then you may be right, he might risk it all and try to go out with a bang in a swan fight with de leon. he'll try to win convincingly or i see him getting stopped for the first time. i hope he succeeds cos he seems to have a lot of confidence in clamoring for that rematch.

Man how the hell can you be a fan of Ponce de leons... He has THE most unattractive style of fighting that I've ever seen from a world champion. The guy is so fucking sloppy it's unbelievable.. I can't believe I sat through his last fight, ugliest prizefight I've watched in ages. I was begging for him to KO his opponent and get that fight over with, but it never even came close to happening, even though he throws for the fences and has wicked KO power. I don't expect Ponce will ever be in a great fight, it's almost physically impossible with how bad he is to watch. All he ever looks for is a one punch KO, and he either gets it, or you have an ugly fight. I thought Penalosa should have beaten him handily. Not to say I thought he did(thought it was very close and the scorecards were a complete joke), I mean he should have been more active and taken it to Ponce. Would like to see a rematch in the hopes that Gerry can really step it up and beat him down. However I would rather see Ponce fight the winner of Marquez Vasquez 3, just so I can see him get him ugly ass KTFO.

I totally understand what you are saying and the best part of your points is that it's true, when Ponce gets the KO,he looks superb, when he doesn't(which is not often) he all of a sudden becomes this volume puncher. I have seen about 12 of his fights and can say he has had some entertaining fights like the 1 v Caballaro(you should see that, although Ponce had his moments,he generally got his ass beaten and was swollen up), the fights with Sod Looknangymantoy or whatever his name was plus his fights with Seeger and guys of that ilk were interesting too. I don't find him boring at all except for his last fight,I actually think he's pretty entertaining to watch. He dam sure as heck has a horrible, horrible style though. Those wiiiiiide sweeping punches,no defence etc etc. but I find him interesting to watch. The guy has power heart and a chin too.
I'd favour the winner of the Rafa-Israel war over him for sure but we don't know how much those 2 will have left and if you are going to stand in front of Ponce,he is always going to have the chance to land the big punch,so imagine if beat either of those 2 :o :o
Re: Gerry Penelosa to defend v Ratanachai Sor Vorapin on March 2
Yeah, I realize that Ponce has an abundance of power, and he is tough with a strong will. But that's really about it. The man MUST have anvils for fists... If he didn't have absolutely awesome power, basically any good boxer would step it up and take it to him, since he's so unbelievably slow and wide open. I suspect he just gains his opponents respect very early on with his thudding power, thus making them reluctant to exchange at all. I don't pretend to be an expert on the guy, I feel if I watched much footage of him in one sitting I'd start having bad thoughts. Your right though I should look for his loss, I'd like to see someone take advantage of how uncoordinated he is. This guy literally leaves me thinking I could be a world champion if he can.

Oh crap,CC for cracking me up. :D :D :D Some of those lines are classic!Track down the Caballaro fight.Although if I remember correctly,he won not only because of Ponce's wide punches but also because of the ridiculous height disparity. In fact,Ponce has said in an interview that he would not want to fight Caballaro again, because of the height issue. ;D ;D
