Re: Rocky Marciano---like or dislike
like - great heart great determination. the only thing against him was that his high profile fights were against fighters past their prime - louis, walcott twice, archie moore, ezzard charles twice. not sure how hed fare nowadays as a cruiserweight but his work ethic was 2nd to none.

It's crazy to think that Layne was the betting fav. when he faced Rocky being that he had previously beaten Jersey Joe. That Layne KO was brutal in the sense that when Rocky hit him it took Laynes body about 5 more seconds before he actually felt the effect of the punch and he fell forward.
Love his fights with LaStarza I know people always talk about the second fight but that 1st one was back and forth all night.
The Ezzard fights were both great fights IMO.
One things for sure about Rocky if there was doubt of him actually wining a fight he'd go back in there and dance off with them again. He also won all of his rematches by KO/TKO.
Great Summery Mick.. your a an encyclopedia of boxing knowledge, ..cc
Marciano was a fantastic watch. the blue print of how to fight short and be successful. its funny though, now every time someone say Marciano i think of that larry holmes ESPN clip someone sent me, and I start laughing my ass off.. .. hold on , ill find it.. Larry Holmes was one funny MUTHF#$2#$. I always a get a chuckle from this clip.. What the hell he was on about I haven’t a clue ? Whatever it was , its some damn funny right there.

Ezzard Charles was really old, and a naturally smaller guy in the first place, Joe Louis was comming out of retirement and he was really old. Walcott was already very old as well, and I might add that he was really outboxing Marciano, but he just was too old. IMO Marciano was in one of the weakest divisions the heavyweight has seen probably third after the heavyweight division a couple of years ago, and the holmes reign division.
I agree that he broke down guys over time with pressure like Cotto, but Suzy Q had more 1-punch KO power than Cotto's left hook. Like you said, Walcott was pretty much outboxing Marciano until Rocky set him up with that little feint jab and put Suzy Q flush on Walcott's jaw. I'm not sure Cotto has that kind of nuclear bomb in arsenal, but Miguel Cotto is probably all around boxer than Rocky was. He did fight in a weaker era, for sure, but he had one of the all time great right hands and chin to go with it. That makes him a threat in any era.

well charles was 32--marciano was 30---not much of a big difference---2 say charles was very old--is a bit of an exaggeration. and rocky looks really small next to charles -yes walcott gave him a boxing lesson--but rocky was also blind 4 rounds-the 4 rounds which he lost to walcott --then got his eyesight back and won rounds.
louis heavyweight divion was the same quality as marciano's-

does that fight exist on film--i could never find it anywhwere
Re: Rocky Marciano---like or dislike
I like Rocky Marciano I think he's a lock top 3 Greatest All-Time heavyweight....he never lost, he fought with great heart, he never ducked anyone, he never let off the gas from 3:00 to 0.00 of every round, and he has an amazing KO ratio to have won every fight he fought as most punchers end up getting outboxed, but not Rocky

LG and thanks for the video I had seen that on one of those ESPN:Classics funny as fuck... ;D
Re: Rocky Marciano---like or dislike
I am not trying to say he isn't great, but IMO its just hard to stand by and let people put him in the top 5 best heavyweights when there are guys like Johnson, Louis, Tunney, Demspey, Langford, Ketchel who had already fought before him and then guys like Ali, Holmes, Frazier, Foreman, Holyfield... I just can't see him being placed higher than them or even Lennox Lewis who some might find suprising but I think he does well against almost anyone who ever fought at heavyweight.

Who knows why he didn't fight those two but I don't think it was because he was worried. As soon as he caught Patterson he would have KO'd him..Patterson would have had to make him miss for 15 rounds. He also probably would have taken Ingemar's best shots and come back with his own..that would have been a great fight!
I guess I like Rocky, he's not an inspiration to me or anything. Things that impress me :- His weight:power ratio, his chin, his determination and the fact he remained undefeated even though he was quite limited as far as boxing goes. Definitely not top 5 ATG for me..purely based on opposition but thats not his fault.
Re: Rocky Marciano---like or dislike
Ambivlent towards him
He was the best fighter of a weak field who knew to get out while the getting was good
Wont say he wouldnt have succeeded at say Cruiser in another era, cant tell one way or the other, all the big names on his resume were well and truly spent when he got them, and he got out before he had to deal with big bruisers like Liston

i think hes 1 of the greatest cuz his best attribute:heart
he was undefeated cuz of heart--doing whatever it takes 2 win the fight, not giving up. he reperesents the true spirit of boxing--
he was a cool fighter 2 watch because his punches looked like he was throwing fast balls -throwng haymaker after haymaker
his stamina was unbelievable-like the energizer bunny--just keeps going and going
y people dont like him--his opposition--which wasnt all that great but it was what it was. if u look at it joe louis had the same quality opposition. marciano never lost a fight--never took a fight lightly--and no1 can ever take that away from him.
the main reason i put this guy in my top 5--is because of heart.
Marciano was the best of his era. Its anybodies guess how fighters of different eras really compare, but to be the best of your generation and to never be beaten is special.

That sentence sums it up for me. If he were to be in an imaginary tournament with all the other legends, IMO he wouldn't fare to well as he'd be beaten by a fair number of the others, but then that's not the fair way to judge.
The way I see it is what would each of the greats have done if they were born in each others eras with their opportunities, e.g. what would Tyson have achieved if he were born in Marciano's time and stepped into the same gym at the same age?
Rocky showed tremendous heart, stamina and determination to overcome fighters who were technically superior to him, he may very well be considered as the greatest competitor the division has ever seen, and p4p considered more than a match to most of the other greats to in hypothetical match ups. Put me in the like category.
Re: Rocky Marciano---like or dislike
Definitely like, but then I am working on a biography of the champ title Redemption: The Life & Death of Rocky Marciano...
Re: Rocky Marciano---like or dislike
There's nothing to really dislike about the Rock IMO. So Like

I'll keep an eye out for your book. I have a question though...how will your book be different from the other Marciano books out there?
Re: Rocky Marciano---like or dislike
Love Marciano, defies physics. The saying goes there is no replacement for displacement does not work for him, he is like car with a 4 cylinder engine but put out 400 bhp. I love lil guys that packs a punch.
