Re: Bracing myself for Saturday night....
I love both guys, all time greats but I'm not too high on this fight. I'll watch it because I'm a boxing fan. Is it me or is 170 the weight for the old timers/guys coming for retimrent to fight each other? Tito-RJJ,wINKY b hOP,Vargas Mayorga? I'm going for Roy on points. I don't think he's going to try to KO Tito and I dont think Tito can hurt Roy.
If I'm honest,the only 2 really intriguing thigs I see are :
* Can Tito hurt Roy and how will Roy react? Will he run, hold etc like he,embaressingly,in the third fight v Tarver.
*how much has weight making affected Roy and how does Tito look.
I have to be totally honest,I think Tito is taking this fight for one reason and one reason only:$$$ I saw a list of his sparring partners the other day on boxing scene,I can't find the article now, maybe in their archives,he' sparring with, for want of a better term...bums.0-2 guys.154 pounders if I remember correctly. That doesn't sound liek he's taking this fight seriously to me.

Especially if he gets caught cold in the first couple of rounds. Will he be able to shake it off and get into the middle rounds? If Jones Jr. sees that he has rocked Tito a bit... will he pounce on the opportunity and go for the early KO? Or would he hesitate thinking about a counter-punch?
Lots to consider in this fight.
I got a feeling that if Tito connects good on Jones than Jones might get gun shy. I don't think Tito will KO him but he may have enough to get Jones's respect. Wheather that will lead to a safety first close UD by Jones or give Tito the confidence to preasure Jones and get himself a decision I don't know. I think it will be a good fight with good shots being landed but I just don't buy into all the KO talk from Jones so I think it will go the distance or at least reach the late rounds.

It's crazy when you think about it.....a guy who campaigned at welter against a guy has fought at heavyweight.
I can't see how Tito has even a remote chance considering how inactive he has been. Doesn't sound like he's getting good sparring either. IMHO he's fucked.....but at least he'l line his pockets.

Yup,he'll line up his pockets for sure and I don't see RJJ trying to KO him,I think Roy will be too scared of getting caught with something himself. Even if it is an AMAZING fight,it still doesn't mean anything in the long term. Does it mean Tito will be able to compete effectively at 168?No. Does it mean RJJ is back to his best? No. It's an insignificant fight imo.
Re: Bracing myself for Saturday night....
Here are some of the guys TIto has been sparring with. Tell me if this indicates he is serious about this
fight:
According to El Nuevo Dia , Edgardo Santos, Eliécer González and Julio de la Cruz are the three men helping Tito :
Santos, who last fought in 2004, has a pro-record as a cruiserweight of 1-4-1
De la Cruz, who also last fought as a pro in 2004, has a record of 15-4 with 14KOs as a middleweight.
González, is said to be nothing more than a local gym rat and has NO pro fights.
Again, does it look like he has been serious for this fight?

I think it pushes whoever wins back into the limelight....in a sorta Peter Manfredo, Alfonso Gomez sorta way.
Re: Bracing myself for Saturday night....
I've always been a big Tito fan... but it's not looking good for him.
He's been off for 2.5 years, and he's facing someone who has remained active.
He's a former welter/middle fighting against a guy who's fought as high as 200 pounds.
When one guy is bigger, faster, stronger, and more active... he's always going to beat the smaller, slower, rustier guy.
I also don't like the attitude matchup. Jones seems like he still feels like he has something to prove, that he really wants to go out on a high note. And in my opinion, it seems like Tito is back just because he misses the spotlight and the energy of the arena. I don't get the feeling that he has the same chip on his shoulder that Jones has.
These guys are both wayyyy past their prime, but let's be honest, if they had fought in '01 when they both in their primes, Jones would have smoked Tito.

Gamo, you and I agree on a lot a things here. (look at the post I made after you) Tito did not impress me on the Countdown show. From what you said, it looks like he gathered his old buddies that use to help him train back in the day and said "hey, lets all get together for old times sake".
But this all might just be bad speculations on our part. I will give the proffecionals the benefit of the dough till fight night....but I ain't planning to put any money on this either.
I don't know much about how fighters choose sparring partners but I will say this, at least he is fighting a big guy in Santos and the 15-4 14KO guy does'nt sound that bad for a sparring partner. He should have some younger, up and cummers though to help him get sharp. Looks to me like these guys are journymen.

Sure, had a big guy in there but he also said a guy who's lost more than he has won and a guy who has never fought as a pro. And 2 of them have been more inactive professionaly than him. That's appaling imo. I prefer not to give the benfit of the doubt, especially in this day and age of PPV costing 50 bucks.
You are only as good as your preparation and that applies to most of your big tests in life. Most top fighters, for big fights, get at least semi decent sparring. Evne if Tito were fighting a bum, that would be inadequate sparring. It's poor imo bro, really poor.

You sure don't pull any punches do you. It hurts me to read this, more so when I agree with almost everything you just said. Still, I feel the fight might be entertaining as long as they both come to fight.
Re: Bracing myself for Saturday night....
This is terrible fight for Tito like i said in the other thread mental preparation is the most important in boxing. And like El Gamo pointed out in another thread Tito's sparring partner's look very questionable and it looks like Tito isn't take this fight very seriously. Plus Tito is coming off an embarrassing loss so his confidence can't be that high. Im a fan of Roy Jones Jr and i will be rooting for Jones obviously but i have always admired Tito and its a shame great fighter like Tito is going to yet again finish his career on a bad note. People may say Jones is past his prime but the difference is Jones has had a few fights to get his confidence back and he has been keeping himself busy. Everything about this fight looks terrible for Tito.
Tito has only fought 4 times in 7 years.
Tito is coming off an almost 3 year lay off.
Tito has never fought at LHW and he wasn't as effective at Middleweight let alone LHW.
Tito is coming off an embarrassing loss, and his confidence is going to be low which is bad.
Tito's sparring partners are questionable and it doesn't look like he is taking this fight seriously.
