Re: Champions that were smart with there money
It's pretty sad with all the champions in the past who made millions after millions in this sport that there are only a handful that have something to show for it. Most of these guys lived fight to fight and by the end of their career they were already in debt.

I was going to say, only in boxing would people be talking so admirably about someone who makes pots of cash and doesn't end up flat broke.. "Oh well this fighter invested in real estate, he must be doing well." I mean for christs sake, if you make MILLIONS of dollars, you invest.
Re: Champions that were smart with there money
....boxing isn't the only profession where people go broke....sure there are a lot of fighters who do wind up broke but look where a lot of fighters come from...so it's not THAT big of a deal IMO

Good point about where they come from, certainly that's a big part of it. If a kid grows up in the ghetto and becomes rich simply from fighting, which he is probably accustomed to anyways, there's no reason he would have learned anything.
Re: Champions that were smart with there money
George Foreman has gotta be up there on top or near to it. I wish George was my daddy.

I don't know about the all boys named George thing, that would confuse the hell out of me.

Yea, I've read he made much more from the Foreman Grill than he ever did in his entire boxing careeer... Makes me wonder if there is anyone who has done the same... Not just invested wisely and retained their earnings or whatnot, but actually gone on to make more money in another venture than they did boxing? Can't think of one for the life of me, at least not a top fighter.

I wondered why Leon Spinks was still working as a janitor with a multi-millionaire brother.
Maybe Leon's brother doesn't want to reward someone who frittered away his own money.

j.j. braddock used his little sum of money wisely.
Re: Champions that were smart with there money
Nino Benvennutti went into television after his retirement, made a tidy little sum to live comfortably on......
.....Then abandoned it all to live in poverty to help the struggling in Calcutta.
Re: Champions that were smart with there money
Well here in Aus Tszyu does VERY well, Fenech is loaded, Mundine and his entire family won't ever have to work, Danny Green is set for life. Some of the old time fighters made a load of money, but i can't remember them all just now. I'll do some drunken research and let you know. Les Darcy made a fortune but after he died his stupid alcoholic farmer father blew the lot because Les never made a will so it went to his dad not his wife. He actually drove one of a few motor cars in Aus at the time, a Buick it was. They used it in his funeral procession here where 200,000 people came from all over to see.

Tszyu seems to be doing well.
Naz won't be in any financial trouble soon.
I know Pintor house in Mexico is huge and he also has a gym he runs.
Eubank must be doing well if he's got money to fill up his truck. ;D
I'm sure Eubank went bankrupt not long ago.

Michael would employ Leon, hire him during training camps, Leon would never show up. Michael would pay Leons bills lend him money that would be spent on drugs and women.
You can only do so much brother or not. What is to do let Leon have access to his funds so he can blow Michaels money as well?
Leon made millions in the ring and blew it all. It is not like he was a brother who has been nothing but a working stiff his whole life at minimum wage and Michael came into a fortune and would not even throw him a few bucks to buy the kids new shoes.
