I don't really know, because I don't know what I'm doing, I'd kind of like to spar and do bag work with them if that's not a problem. The main reason I wanted them though was to spar. I think I know someone who is into boxing who will spar with me.
I just don't know if it's better to do bag work with thicker gloves or thinner ones, heavier ones or lighter ones, etc. I kinda like the idea of using thinner gloves to toughen my hands more but heavier gloves work your arms more right?
Re: Wal-Mart $19.99 boxing gloves?
By the way if you are wondering what gloves I bought the first time these are the ones:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...32573917502498
See the bunched up vinyl at the fingertip? That stuff gives my fingertips blisters LOL... The Everlast ones I just ordered look like they have less bunch up at that part of the glove. I bet they have better padding inside too so I don't have to feel it so much. Also Vinyl feels icky to me, it never really breaks in to form to your hand better does it?
Funny story... Today I had the vinyl gloves in my car and I gave my co-worker a ride to get lunch at Jack In The Box. He had no money and asked me to buy him a burger. I said OK I will buy you lunch, but you have to wear the boxing gloves into the restaurant and eat with them on! He did... It was awesome, we got so many stares... He had a really hard time getting out his wallet and paying and stuff but he got it ready beforehand so he could reach it... Pretty funny stuff...

all of that is preference. and also you will have to consider things you will go through(like how your wrists will probably hurt and other things may hurt).
It depends on what kind of bag work you are doing (heavy, speed, double-end, etc.)
I mean it depends really on you. you said you dont know what your doing so you probably dont have the punches down pat? just walk through everything real slow and focus on everything that each part of your body is oing. I say to practice the punches because if your just an average person with no experience and start hitting a heavy bag, you'll probably hurt your hands. If this is the case then the bigger gloves would be better for you.

your right on what you said about the vinyl. I have never used vinyl gloves but I could definitly see that. Those gloves look more like novelty gloves to me, but like I said evarlier some would buy them to box with(not making fun of anyone, its just the truth). yeah the shape is real important and also the padding.
what was on the inside of the glove?
Re: Wal-Mart $19.99 boxing gloves?
Well these are the type of bag gloves I have been using so far
http://store.titleboxing.com/exwrisprobag.html
Actually the ones I have were my Dad's, they have about half as thick padding as the ones in that picture, but those are the closest I could find.
My heavy bag is an Everlast Nevatear 70 pound bag and it's black vinyl. It's not as big as I expected, I have seen other 70 pound bags that are bigger. It's really dense and hard.
When I first started my wrists would hurt a lot but after a week of hitting it every day, now I can almost hit as hard as I can... BUT there's one problem area, I hurt my left wrist every time I try to do a left hook. I can do a right hook fine and hit hard, but a LEFT hook feels so awkward and I bend my wrist and hurt it. Left jabs are no problem though so far. In fact, I can hit as hard as I want at shoulder level, it's the body shots I am having a hard time doing without hurting my wrists.
Another thing I am wondering about... My hands themselves don't hurt just my wrists, though my nephew who has been hitting the bag with me is getting some weird sores on his hands. He is getting cracks on the skin between his pinky and ring finger and after 4 rounds or so they start to bleed. Any ideas why this is happening? Will his skin toughen up, and what should he put on the cracked skin to help it heal?
Also the bag gloves gave him a blister on the top of his index finger, on both hands. Maybe he is doing something strange with his fist or his punching. Is there any guide to making a proper fist or punching form that we could go over to make sure he's not doing something wrong that would hurt his hands?

I don't know, it feels like some kind of polyester fabric or something but I don't think there's any padding at the fingertips so those wrinkles rub right on the tips of your fingers.
BTW it says on Wal-Mart's site, about those $19 gloves: "Top-quality gloves from the biggest name in boxing."
Wow... Top quality? For only $19? WOW! ehhe
Re: Wal-Mart $19.99 boxing gloves?

Re: Wal-Mart $19.99 boxing gloves?

I have the same heavy bag. my dad bought it for me for Christmas. Does yours have a stand with a speed bag platform on the other side? well he bought it so he could take down my old speed bag platform( a real good one) because it was nailed to 2 two by fours on a wall for part of the basement we had finished. the posts that were in the basemnt are still the and the 2x4's were on it. I broke both of the 2x4 from an exercise called killing the bag. well anyways my point was my dad bought this and didnt realize that it wasnt nearly as good as what i had. that heavybag i dont like because it is really hard in some places. I prefer water-based bags. but all you have to do is open it up and loosen up all of the stuff in there so it isnt bunched together. the reason it is softer at the top is because you hit it more there (probably) and it loosens the stuff and the stuff falls down. hitting it for a while will also loosen it up, but just open it up.
what type of hook do you throw? there are 2 ways to throw it, is your fist vertical or horizontal when it lands? also If I was you I wouldnt throw it at full force until you get you wrist right or it will coninue to hurt. the way most people's minds work they think it will toughen up after you do it long enough, well that may be true, but it will also toughen up by doing it correctly and you wont have pain.
I wouldnt know anything about the sore. I guys it might be a reaction to the vinyl. (sinces its so slick and it seems it could cause your hand to cut) just run your hands along the outside, like you said it doesnt feel good.
btw that isnt what i meant by hurting your hands (i was referring to bone and cartilage) but my guess would be if the inside is made of vinyl then thats is definitly it.
explain to me how you make a fist and how his knuckles are shaped and i'll tell you if you are making a fist wrong.

the top brands are winning, grant, reyes and everlast depending on your preference. so are better in certain areas than others are.
Re: Wal-Mart $19.99 boxing gloves?
I'll try that to loosen up the bag. I bought the bag separately, no stand, but it definitely sounds like the same one you have.
When I throw hooks to the body my fist is vertical, like as if I was holding a pole that was straight up and down. I feel like I'm hitting the bag pretty hard and Owww, that bag is so firm down there LOL... It feels OK with my right hand, I feel like I could HURT someone hehe, but with my left hand it's so awkward and I can hardly do it without hurting my wrist. Anyway is that the right way to do a hook to the body? I'm doing it about at the level of the bottom of my ribs, slightly higher than the belly button. I feel like when I do it with my right hand I can get my shoulder and hips into it and drive it in there hard, but with my left hand I feel like it's just a total mess..
I will have to take a look (or maybe a picture?) and see how my nephew is making a fist. I'll also try to find out more exactly how he is hitting. I notice he is hitting the bag kinda weird sometimes, it looks like he's making contact with the outer part of his fist first, like hitting the bag ring-finger knuckle first. I was taught differently... I dunno, I didn't realize making a fist or punching was so complicated LOL... Actually my dad taught me a little bit when I was younger, my dad used to be a lightweight boxer when he was in the army reserves. He actually was pretty good from what I hear tell, I wish I could get the guy to give me some help but he's really anti-boxing now. One of his friends died in the ring and he won't talk about boxing any more. In fact he's going to be extremely p***ed if he finds out I want to spar.
Re: Wal-Mart $19.99 boxing gloves?
Oh yeah by the way, let me explain how I am making a fist and you can tell me if this is OK.
I clench all my fingers as if I was squeezing a little rod in my hand, I clench them tight so there's no space there and the knuckls line up straight for the most part, then I put my thumb over the fingers, the thumb pointing towards my pinkie. My thumb ends up perpendicular to my fingers. I don't know how to describe it better. maybe I should take a picture.
One thing I noticed is sometimes after hitting the heavy bag, the lowest joint at the base of my thumb gets sore. It seems to happen when I squeeze too hard with my thumb and it pushes my thumb too far down towards my wrist, to where my thumb is then the thumb joint hurts. It doesn't seem to happen when I wear heavier gloves. Also if I make my thumb slightly less than perpendicular to the fingers, so it is angled slightly towards the front of my fist, the pain goes away but it feels awkward since I'm in the habit of squeezing it to perpedicular position.

I believe it is also. they said they got it at SAMS club and the bag gloves dont have the logo on the fingertipes, but beside that there the same.
yes that is the right way to throw hooks to the body. i think that you are just not use to throwing left hooks yet (probably the hardest punch to master). i was just saying because in close you can throw a horizontal hook to the head if you feel more comfortable with it.
btw dont throw right hooks unless you are in close. it rarely lands and is so easy for someone to counter you with a big shot.
my advice would to walk through everything slow and then focus to make sure you have everything right.
the height at which you throw the kook to the body depends on your opponent and his build height, etc.
but a left hook to the liver (on the right side, the organ is exposed a little right under the ribs)
do make sure that you know that leverage is the key to punching power
you wont to try and land with the whole fist

thats sounds right.
take a picture. the thumb may not be right due to the second part.
are you punching the bag without gloves?
in a glove you thumb will be seperated (i am sure you know)
