Re: Am I the only one who thinks Olympic Boxing Scoring is beyond pathetic?
I think the same, I tune in every day at 5pm to watch the fights and usually last 1 fight, most of which I spend spotting punches that land and are not scored and mocking cuffs that are. It is so frustrating and must be a nightmare for the guys in there, just look at the scores in some bouts are they telling us that on most occasions in 4 rounds only 1 or 2 scoring shots are landed either the defence is amazing or the scoring is a load of crap, mmm wonder which that is. Some of these guys dreams are being ripped up in front of them.
The scoring is also forcing the styles between amateur and professional further apart making it even more difficult to make the transition. Sure amateur boxing is the building section of most boxers career as they progress to professional it is making it a joke and you might as well forget it and do it the way Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has done it, bore people to tears while you learn your trade in the pro ring, you will have more 20 year olds with 20-30 fights.
All in this is not boxing yeah it's a ring with two guys in gloves but it ain't boxing.
Re: Am I the only one who thinks Olympic Boxing Scoring is beyond pathetic?
What would solve the problem here would be for the judges to wear clkear glasses:o.I mean some of the clean flush shots that dont get counted are soo obvious that it miffs me to see that there dont get counted.Im really looking forward to watch my man "Price" get a medal i just hope the judges dont spoil his changes!!:-\;D
Re: Am I the only one who thinks Olympic Boxing Scoring is beyond pathetic?
The problem is that all the judges have different angles the rules stipulate that you have to see the punch lands cleanly with the correct part of the glove, and no be blocked in anyway. Then you have to hit the right colour button within a second of all the other judges. A natural reaction to hit the button from seeing a punch will probably take about 0.5 secs, then when you bring the thought process into it you are probably adding another 0.5 secs, therefore anything over that is not scored. then you have got 5 judges 3 out of the five have to hit the button within the 1 second. If you look at the ages of some of the judges they will probably have problems hitting the button in a second anyway, no wonder the scoring is so bad.
Re: Am I the only one who thinks Olympic Boxing Scoring is beyond pathetic?
Glad to see the blokes are in agreement. ;D
Re: Am I the only one who thinks Olympic Boxing Scoring is beyond pathetic?
Honestly Olympic boxing is so shit they may as well remove it from the Olympics altogether.
You can no more win the Olympics in boxing on merit than you can win the Eurovision song contest on merit.
It's all down to the whim of the judges.
I've stopped watching it altogether and will just stick to the athletics which they can't fuck up with bullshit interperations and scoring methods.
Re: Am I the only one who thinks Olympic Boxing Scoring is beyond pathetic?
Yesterday I was watching England vs Cuba (forgot the weight) and the English guy landed a clear body punch with great form just like a J.C. Chavez body punch where you can even hear the sound and guess what, CERO POINT! What the hell?! There are some clear punches I didn’t see anyone getting points on other fights.

I haven't seen a body shot score a point yet, I have not watched all the fights but have seen some decent ones dug in but they never seem to score. Seems to be an ongoing thing with amateur boxing.

Yeah I've seen guys get their heads snapped back and staggered and still no point, also I've see people get points for cerrar.

All the judges need is a helmet with wires attached so they get 240 volts :shocking:if they dont press a button when the other judges do!
and the reverse when they press it alone ;D.
Oh ok then ,just make it 220 :shocking:.
Seriously though a few volts would help but They also need monitors in front of their faces so that they can look at the screen when the ref or the other fighter is in the way of the action as happens with at least one judge in each combo.

I was thinking perspective is a big problem especially when they are close.
Re: Am I the only one who thinks Olympic Boxing Scoring is beyond pathetic?
olympic scoreing is way beyond pathetic
Re: Am I the only one who thinks Olympic Boxing Scoring is beyond pathetic?
It's a bad scoring system, and the judges are making it even worse by making bad use of the system.
Boxing is not about punch-counting, especially when the punch-counting system ignores jabs and body shots.

Same here, maybe they're blind to body shots or just retarded

They are not getting paid, they are there to represent there country.
To me Olympic boxing is like the Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard university of the noble art. If you can make it there you can make it anywhere You only need to look at past Olympics champions and past fighters that done well at the Olympics and then seeing how they fared in the pro ranks to realise that Olympic boxing is a brilliant starting point for any pro fighter.
I think this scoring system is the best out there rather than the old cloak and dagger (Hands in the cards at the end) scoring system of the past. With this system you ACTUALLY get to see what's going on. Besides when we are old and grey and you have your grand kids next to you, what do you think they would be more impressd by ? You telling them that you were a world boxing champion (But got beat later) or if you got your gold medal out and told them that you won this in the Bejing Olympics in 2008.
Open scoring often leads to boring fights and the scoring is not representative of what happens during the rounds.
Re: Am I the only one who thinks Olympic Boxing Scoring is beyond pathetic?
The problem is I see, other then the many pointed out in this thread already, is that the scoring system is designed to teach boxing. I think for the beginner boxer it is a good idea, as it rewards points based on contact, and usually proper contact. This promotes learning the sport from its basics.
I won't argue that what we are all seeing here is a farce. I'm disgusted watching it and can't believe my eyes. For giving true what I suggest in my first statement above, where are the points for the jabs, the body shots...the contacts? They just don't seem to be there. There is a obvious level of incompetence. As if maybe these fighters are too skilled for these judges to be able to interpret.
I don't know. I have defended the olympic style scoring based on my reasoning as stated in this post in the past...but after watching this debacle on the sport, I am losing faith, and fast.
