Turn around and I see Paul Gonzalez, someone who I read a lot about and heared a lot about growing up in East L.A.
For those who don't know Paul was part of the 1984 US Boxing team and the Light Flyweight gold medalist. He was team mates with Steve McCrory, Pernell Whittaker, Mark Breland, Tyrell Biggs, Meldrick Taylor, Frank Tate, Henry Tillman and Holyfield.
As a pro he did not have the same success as he did in the Olympics having a short lived career. He did get a shot at the title vs. Orlando Canizalez but lost via TKO on cuts as Canizalez was able to catch him early on and cut him up to force the stoppage.

There I 1st met "cut man" Miguel Diaz I'm sure you've seen him. He's one of the best around. I couldn't stop telling you how many times I've seen him in a corner. He's been with Cotto for yrs. and he will be working Pacquiaos corner vs. ODLH come Dec.
Diaz was great man, we spent easily about an hour talking about boxing and some of the worst cuts he's had to work on. He talked to me about how he got started and were it's taking him. He really is great to talk with and was all laughs.

I believe Miguel Diaz was adarn good fighter as well.

It was Danny "Little Red" Lopez, wow! what a treat it was to talk with him about his fights with Salvador Sanchez I probably talked to him for another good hour, asking him about the fight and how he felt as the fights went on. He said he felt he had enough to come on strong late in the fight but that his body just did not respond to him like he would have wanted. I aksed him about his fight Olivares he smiled and said what a fight that was, I said I agree it was a sweet battle he said the Forum was just jammed packed to the top that night. He said Olivares shots were hard but he said he knew he hit harder them him and that he knew if he caught him with the right shots he'd win.

I had Lopez sign one of my gloves...

They have been stiffing this great warrior for years by not inducting him into the IBHF. If Saad was Gatti before Gatti, Little Red was Saad before Saad!!

You know he did mention that he fought but did not go into details...
He mainly talked about the Pac-ODLH fight.
Re: * CutMeMick visits the World Boxing Hall of Fame 2009 *
Wow, looks like you had a great time!!
It's too bad that Lennox and Pernell were no shows, that would have been nice to meet them as well, but it looks like your were in heaven without them anyways.
Meeting Emile must have been pretty emotional, it would have been for me. I'll admit, I didn't know much about him or his career until I watched Ring Of Fire, and what an amazing story. I got emotional, and felt the torment he felt about the death of Benny Paret, and I was a crying mess when he met Benny's son at the end. I only hope that he is more at peace with what happened.
Thanks for sharing. ;D

Rumors had it that Lennox was there in the hotel but did not want to participate in the Memorabilia event. I'm still not even sure if he was there for the ceremony or not...
Also Pernell I know was not there at all, story goes that he wanted to fly 1st class. But the WBHF is a non-profit orgnization and gettting Pernell a 1st class plane ticket would be steep for them. They gave him a flight number for his flight incase he changed his mind but he said he did not fly coach...
Now how true that story is I'm not sure. But that's what was being talked.

Really was emotional for me seeing him and sitting there next to him and talking with him you could see it in his eyes and you could hear it in his voice when he talked that there was soo much history there and so much to still know about him.

Thanks, mate.
Re: * CutMeMick visits the World Boxing Hall of Fame 2008 *
It was Miguel's father who was the good fighter. Junior only had one pro fight. I had that wrong.
Re: * CutMeMick visits the World Boxing Hall of Fame 2008 *
Holy crap man. I bet you hated to see that day end. Awesome stuff there.

Simply put, these are absolutely out-f!!!!-standing Mick.Great pics and it sounds like a blast.Count yourself lucky my man, many would give a lesser limb to have that experience.Your enthusiasm comes through, love the Norris Pic especially.Glad he is doing well after a career of excitement.
I love to see these events,The past older greats meshing & blending with the current greats really puts the huge greatness of this sport into one focus....and why we love it ;D.Anything On Marvin Johnson,Did he show up for induction?Love watching his battles with Saad,Lopez etc.Just classics.
Griffith looks great...Happy!!Good to see Gonzalez as well.I thought he got shafted a bit in second fight with Canizales, butting heads like billy goats.Seemed injury prone but solid, just did not pan out.Just noticed Danny Lopez...man he looks like he is ready to answer the bell in that one ;D. Thanks for sharing dude.Awesome insight as always.
