Olo Afolabi is not a bad one at all. But I have three in mind.

I've heard that he had a few amateur fights either right after jail or right before going in.
I thought he learnt inside, came out had a pro fight which he lost, and then he spent the next year and a half training up in the basics in amateur sparriing or something.
On prison boxers, I think Dwight Muhammad Qawi was another one because I remember hearing he came out of pen & went pro, altho I might have him mixed up with someone else.
I'm gonna go with Jake La Motta as one as well based on the "J". I think they showed Marciano did have a short ams career of 15 fights or so, so I'm gonna go as well with some of the guys from that era like Ezzard Charles or Archie Moore. As you can see I am spreading my bets ;D

Bernard Hopkins had an extensive amateur career, starting at the age of 10 and had reportedly 99 fights overall with a record of 95-4.
Just sayin'.
I think people like to glorify and romanticize it with the whole jail deal.

I stand corrected.

What about Matt Skelton? I heard he only had a few other fights.
What about Audley Harrison, his amateur career is far from stellar ;)
Re: What great fighters fought without having an amature career?
Earnie Shavers made his pro debut like a month after he joined a boxing gym.
Although he's just a great puncher, not a great fighter.

Check out Lt hvy James Scott for a prison story.Basically in and out since a kid and as far as I know he had little to no amatuer background.Had many sanctioned and televised fights from behind the walls of Rahway prison with some top calibur fighters,Qawi,Muhammed,Lopez among others.

Rahway is every boxer's favorite prison!!!

One more hint. One of the three I have in mind (there may be others) was from Mexico.
