When Did Hattons Punch Resistance Go?

His chin is something that has been built up solely on the back of the Tszyu fight because he took a couple of solid looking shots without looking hurt. Thing is even Tszyu's power seem to have been hit or miss. It lookes spectacular when he ko'd Judah....but Judah's china chin obviously helped in that dept. Seen a few interviews (only yesterday as it happens - old boxing monthly mag) with Tszyu's past oppnents - some say he hits hard, some say he can't really punch. I'd guess the truth is somewhere in between but the power is hyped because his best win resulted in a spectacular KO. Anyway getting back to Hatton....


I've watched him his whole career and he has been stunned or hurt on numerous occassions. Gilbert Quiros seriously hurt him in the first round of their fight back in 2000. Eamonn Magee had him down and then badly hurt in the 2nd round, Vince Phillips shook him up big-time. Hatton even admitting that his legs had completely gone at that point in the fight. Tackie also tagged him and hurt him. Then there was the Urango fight where a body shot doubled him over and then Collazo hurt him several times before Lazcano had him in trouble twice. His punch resistance has just been pretty average. Against all of the above he could get away with it because they weren't quite good enough to finish him off and as such let him off the hook. He just wasn't that lucky against Mayweather or the Pacman.

Hatton, after goin over the question of the post in my head loads since the pac loss, has never been the same since Luis Collazo. I'm quite a Collazo fan, as well as Hatton, but I think Collazo gave Hatton a real good hiding in that fight towards the end, that was the first time i've really seen Hatton all over the place and hanging on for dear life. That has to be the turning point for me coupled with the shots he took from KT.

Agreed. Plus its worth noting that prior to signing for the Collazo fight, he was probably bigger than he'd ever been.

Having said that, iv'e never thought Hatton was tough. (Iv mentioned it before). Hatton is very brave (borderline stupid) but he's not tough.

In the Tszyu & Castillo fights he was clearly troubled by body shots.

Yes. He was on Queer Street for the first time in the last round of that one and visted it several times thereafter.

I think his life style caught up with him.

He never had any defense so that could be another reason or it's that reason and the one above combined.

It is the accumulation of punches over 50 fights and having even less of a defence against the world class boxers he has faced. That would shorten anybodies career.

I think Ricky's punch resistance has something to do with this logo...

They say its the ones you don't see that hurt you. Tszyu's punched weren't hard to see coming (unless you did something stupid like drop your hands and lean back with your chin in the air). Even still he hit like a ton bricks. Hatton was young at that point and absorbed the shots better. Allowing him to stand and trade.

Looking at the Pac and Mayweather fights. Those were the same type of shots. Beautiful short inside shots that an aggressive fighter often never sees coming. One put him on his back and the other probably worthy of 3 concussions from a single punch (if you count the ring post and his head hitting the canvas). Mayweather probably figure Hatton would be a sucker for the punch as did Roach and Pac (if not before watching tape of the Mayweather fight, definitely after). That unfortunately solves Ricky every time apparently. Malignaggi is probably wishing like hell he tried throwing those. Even with limited punching power, he probably could have scored a flash or two.

Now I'm not saying Rickys isn't damaged goods now as far as punch resistance goes. But I think the quality, placement and timing of those shots have a lot to do with it.

I think Hatton yo-yoing his weight so much may have finally cost him. You could tell even vs Urango and Lazcano he was getting a little more tired at the end of fights....fattening up and trying to make weight is soooo counterproductive, I think that hurt him more than the change in trainers and everything else.

Hatton should have been able to fight at 147 better as well....shame really

Which also explains why Roy Jones lost his jaw.

What you do today affects tommorrow, its an ongoing thing that caught up.

That could be all true, I always thought Hatton had problems with shots he didn't see. Collazo, Mayweather, Lazcano all hit him with shots that he didn't see. The final KO against Pacquiao he just didn't see, he was blind to it and you can see that in some of the avatars here, the earlier punches I don't know. But that was always my impression, all that leaping in from the outside it's hard to see a short shot like the ones they all caught him with.

Well obviously it went away gradually and not all at once, like it usually does with fighters.
It's not like one day he had a granite chin, the he got KTFO and he the has a glass jaw.

I think it was a combination of the Tszyu fight and his unofrtuante fondness for alcohol and grease.

Mayweather finally cracked his chin with accuracy and the accumulation of clean shots.
