Re: Oh no call the boxing police we've got another catchweight!
Miguel Cotto needs those extra pounds a lot more then Mayweather does. I would hate to see Cotto fight below 147, it just seems like it's the right weight class for him and he looks much better and fights much smarter at 147.

I agree with this. I'd like to see the Pac-Cotto fight at 147 as most fairly neutral fans would, considering what is on the line. But I have to hand it to Roach, love him or hate him for it, it was a nifty smoke and mirror trick to bring up the 143 possibility to have the fans take kinder to 145. He wants his guy to win, and is obv trying to get any edge.
Also agree about the no belt on the line making a diff. in the negotiations too for the Mayweather fight, plus his ability to fight leaner.
Re: Oh no call the boxing police we've got another catchweight!
I could care less about the belts tbh. Boxing fans should disregard the alphabets entirely, and not just bring them up when it's to their advantage. Is this Cotto's WBO title people are talking about?

I'm not sure how Floyd will possibly be able to compete being this drained and I hope there is no honour in the victory for Marquez when he predictably wins due to Mayweather's dehydrated state.
Marquez is just a coward, move up to 147 and face the best if you can, don't drag them down to you.
Come on people, show your outrage here.
LOL
Do I detect some sarcasm from you Mr. Hobbit?
Re: Oh no call the boxing police we've got another catchweight!
This is awesome now itz more fair then ever.
Re: Oh no call the boxing police we've got another catchweight!
Exactly. It will attract more fans.

A guy that fought at Middleweight ? i think you mean Jr Middleweight, and Floyd Mayweather Jr still couldn't make the limit. Which is why he was only 150 pounds.
Floyd Mayweather Jr is a small Welterweight, much smaller than guys like Miguel Cotto. Who i wouldn't be suprised could walk around at 160 or close to it.
Which is why Miguel Cotto was weight drained at Jr Welterweight, because he was even getting stunned, by fighters like Paul Malignaggi for crying out loud. Ever since he's moved up he's looked so much more durable and stronger, that's not even comparable to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

How exactly? Since moving up he's been ktfo by Margarito, was backpeddling furiously in the later rounds against Shane Mosely and was in all kinds of trouble against Joshua Clottey.
This 'he was so much more vulnurable at 140' assumption is totally unconvincing.
It's so annoying people just claim a statement as fact and then keep repeating it as if that makes it so.
Cotto was never knocked out at 140 lbs so the idea that he was more vulnurable there is a long way from being proven.
It basically follows a single fight, the Malignaggi bout, but Paulie fought out of his skin that night and maybe Cotto wasn't 100% for reasons other than being too big at the weight. He's only 5 ft 7 and hardly built like a brick wall.

Bilbo im not actually sure believing, all of what your saying. I know this is just a sarcastic thread but again im not sure how much your being serious, but all i know is that Miguel Cotto was getting rocked all over the place by DeMarcus Corley, Ricardo Torres, Paul Malignaggi, and he was hurt by Lovemore N'dou.
As soon as he moved up he looked stronger, and if your actually going to tell me. He didn't just because you want to defend Manny Pacquiao, then your just being another Xadu.
If the Jr Welterweight version of Miguel Cotto, would of fought Shane Mosley, Zab Judah. He would of been put down or KO'ed by atleast one of them.
Infact i remember at the time he first moved up, and fought Carlos Quintana, and he never looked better. And he looked so much more solid and stronger.
Come on Bilbo your really counting the loss to Antonio Margarito ? when theres strong evidence to prove Antonio Margarito was using loaded gloves ?
Joshua Clottey is a big Welterweight i thought he's been as high as 170 ? and considering most people considered it to be a tough fight, before the fight i don't really see your argument here.
And i thought he was just cruising against Shane Mosley in the later rounds, because he knew he had a points lead and he was just. Protecting his lead.
Again im not really sure what your trying to prove here, people have been saying Miguel Cotto was drained at 140, long before a fight with Manny Pacquiao was announced.
So its not like people are using it as an excuse, just because he's fighting Manny Pacquiao. Again i see your argument about Manny Pacquiao, moving through so many weightclasses.
But again Bilbo you also have to realize he was like 16 or 17, when he started pro boxing. And in 14 years or so, putting on 30+ pounds is normal. Especially with all the help he's got with dietitians, trainers, ETC.
I was able to put on quite alot of muscle mass, in only a few short years. Obviously i put it on easier because im naturally alot bigger than Manny Pacquiao, at 6'1. And i was skinny for my height at 140+ pounds.
But my point i was able to get up to low 180+ pounds, and i've lost a few pounds now and im at my peak weight-wise. So a teenager Manny Pacquiao in a span of 14 years being able to put on 30+ pounds, and still be healthy is pretty normal IMO.
So it isn't quite as unreal as you think it is, yes what he's accomplished is great but you understand what im saying i hope. Floyd Mayweather when he was a teenager was only a Featherweight, and he started his pro career at Super Featherweight.
And with his frame it's pretty obvious he isn't a big Welterweight, and that proves my point when he couldn't even make the Jr Middleweight limit. So him moving down in weight will not effect him as much as it will Miguel Cotto.
Re: Oh no call the boxing police we've got another catchweight!
No more catchweight !!!
Solution: a new weight class “Super Jr. Welterweight” at 143.5
Re: Oh no call the boxing police we've got another catchweight!
these catchweight posts are about the dumbest things I've read since I've been on this site. So if you fight for the Welterweight title and you weight 146 your not a legit champion? What difference does it make any ways, these guy all put on weight after the weigh-in anyways!!!. Most boxers are a minimum 1 or sometimes 2 weight classes over the limit when they get in the ring. A catch weight is just another issue to negotiate, just like brand of gloves, size of the ring, etc etc. If Cotto can't beat Pacman at 144 or 143 or 147 then he won't beat him period!!!This such a non-issue if you ask me.

the issue is, time he (Cotto) spends trying to lose the weight is time he takes away from actual training and getting him in fighting shape

Sure Cotto was rocked at Jr Welter!!! See Torres & Malanaggi.
What fights were you watching? He barely made it out of round3 against Torres!
He started packing on muscles and filled out and moved up. He was not as cut as he is not when he was 22 years old. He's obv grown
Cotto gets rocked all the time. But he wins. So no one can put his lights out without loaded gloves.

Right:rolleyes:
What weight did those Two start at? Was either Welter?
No true welter could fight any lower than welter, Ricky Hatton is a true light welter and couldnt fight any lower, doesnt mean hes the best though but he couldnt fight any lower, whereas Cotto and Mosely both fought at lower weights, infact Mosely needed steroids to get to the higher weights;)
