I still go with the original recorded CD's, the sound quality is thousand times better than a compressed mp3. Though its expensive and have to change every now and then, CD's are great collections too.
I tried extracting all my Metallica CD's, compressed and burn the 5 albums into one and it's totally not as good.
But i envy X for having a 120G ipod which i cannot afford

You don't need to use compressed MP3's if you have enough space on your device. I have tons of album-quality MP3's; some are even ripped from vinyl, though I have no idea how that would work.
