Yes we all know that certain musicians in the past couldn't reach the heights of Elvis, no matter how talented or creative they are. Yes he did introduce "black music" to the general population, but to give him full and sole credit for starting it as the masses have done is a disservice and distortion of the history of the rock n roll genre.Quote:

I compared Elvis to Eminem, Justin Timberlake and the Beastie Boys in that he made a certain type of black music very popular to the white kids in the suburbs just like them. Isn't this true? SO what part of that statement is false?:confused:
I sure wonder if 30 or 40 years from now, if the masses will say Eminem is the king of hiphop or Justin Timberlake is the king of Rnb and give them sole credit for starting the genre? Just food for thought.
BTW, I don't have a problem with Elvis, for he did help make rock popular, but he's not the king imo. The masses usually don't know who Berry, Didley, and many great pioneers that help kick start this awesome genre, and they too should be given credit for it, but it seems like only hardcore fans know about them. I guess that is the problem I have.

I see both sides of the argument when it comes to Elvis. My take is that he was ultimately a great intepreter of songs in a vein similar to Sinatra. The difference being that Elvis could shake his hips and do rock and roll. Elvis was never an innovator and did not invent rock and roll, but he was extremely important in making it palatable for the radio and making it popular. There might have been some racism involved in it needing a white guy to break through, but it was what it was I guess.

He was beating Elvis in the charts, he was the darling, but when he started to date a minor, it all went to the drain and the medias, the church etc did everything they could to erase him from the surface of planetmusic.

To compare Elvis to those people essentially denies his talent. May I ask you why Elvis is THE Rock'n'Roll icon? Sure as miles said he "interpreted" most of the R&B portion of his arsenal that was more heavily routed in the black communities of the time but there has to be a reason why Elvis is called The King and why Chuck Berry, Bo, and all the rest of the black Rock'n'Roll Founding Fathers were kind of left in the shaddow of Elvis.Quote:

But hell in music everyone steals, borrows, or is "inspired by" the people that came before them. The thing is Elvis is Elvis and that puts him at the top of the list because....(and I wonder if anyone thought of this when I mentioned it before) did anyone think about how many TVs there actually were when Elvis did 'Aloha From Hawaii' when he got 1.5 BILLION people to watch that live? I mean that is CRAZY.

Sure everyone borrows or is influenced by someone. But the masses said he created rock n roll and that without Elvis there would not be rock n roll which is entirely false. He did not create this genre. He just made it popular for white kids in the suburbs kind of like Justin Timberlake and Eminem did for different genres of music. There would still be rock n roll without Elvis.
And the reason why Elvis is called the King and is more popular than Berry, Didley, Little Richard and the pioneers was that he was the right color and they were not. This was the 1950's we're talking about when rock exploded. And the 1950s is an era that wasn't too kind to blacks. They needed the right guy to market this musical genre and Elvis is the right guy.
Saying Elvis is the King of rock is like saying Kenny G is the king of Jazz, or Eminem is the king of hip hop or Justin Timberlake is the king of RnB.;D
The question is "who is the real King of Rock'n'Roll?" and the correct answer is ELVIS....end of discussion.
Who were the Founders of Rock'n'Roll might give us a different answer BUT Elvis would still be in there....disagree with me if you must but Elvis is THE KING.
