You can tell that 135 is more than likely his max. Plus consider that JMM will be 37 this year with a lot of wear and tear on his body who's giving up 4 inches in height and a few inches in reach and this smells like a massive bullshit fight in Khan's favor.
And enough with the "he's 23 years old" crap. Guys like Foreman, Ali, Tyson, Leonard, Pacquiao, Mayweather, DeLahoya had already achieved a lot of success in the fight game by being lineal champs in 1 division or moving up and dominating another division at the same age!
The kid is nothing but a hype and con job. And I was starting to be a fan of his when I thought he was going to take Maidana, but an old and possibly shot JMM as his next opponent is a laugh.
How do we know Marquez doesn't look good past 135? He was up against Mayweather....probably the most talented fighter of a generation. How do you think Maidana would look against him? Much worse would be my guess.
The thing is, you're rating him as a con job and a hype job yet your using all time greats as yard-sticks to who he should be fighting.
This forum is unbelievable at times.
I'm using all time greats as an measuring stick because you guys that are Khan supporters keep on using this mantra, "He's only 23" as if that's an excuse to fight powderpuffs and past their prime fighters. You guys are thinking that 23 is not good enough to step up in competition, but it's been done before in boxing, hence why I'm using those legends as examples. Salita? Kotelnik? A shot 1 eye Barrera? But hey he's only 23. Next year when he fights mostly bums and has beens again it's hey he's only 24, then only 25, then only 26, etc.
And yeah I seriously think Marquez can't handle 140. Why? Common sense man. If he was struggling at 135 to beat Casamayor and Diaz then it's common sense he's going to struggle at 140, especially at being 37 this year with a shitload of fights and wear and tear.
@Fenster
Yeah he's ranked 5th by the ring p4p but does this mean he takes Tim Bradley or even the Con boy who's not ranked at all in the top p4p lists? SO what's your point of bringing up the p4p list? ANd Hatton is a shot fighter, JMM may be on the decline but not shot yet, he has a chance there but against Bradley or Con boy? The chances are slim for the man.

Apparently he's really cocky.
He followed the Klitschko's around Germany demanding a fight but then pulled out through 'injury' when his TV deal collapsed.
Then he told the world that if Mayweather stood toe to toe with him in the ring he'd 'fucking eat him', ...before face planting into a turnbuckle.
Then he spent the rest of his career calling out Joe Calzaghe despite never really doing anything that warranted a shot. I believe that's how he made his name actually.

You said Marquez is "old and possibly shot"
If he's ranked 5 P4P his age is irrelevant. He is still clearly regarded as one of the best fighters on the planet. And I doubt it's even possible for a "shot" fighter to be regarded as one of the current best on the planet.
So the P4P ranking highlights that Marquez is still very highly thought of by most.
Now you consider Khan just "hype" and a "con," so how can the 5th ranked best boxer on earth be a weak opponent for him?

Why's it common sense? He stopped both Diaz and Casamayor in his only 2 fights at that weight. If you're going to use his performance against Mayweather at 147 to say he cannot handle it, then i am equally justified in using his performances at 135 to justify that he can handle it.
If you think a 23 year old fighting a top 5 pound 4 pounder is 'powderpuff' then you need to take your head for a shit. Seriously.
If you don't think Marquez is a step up from competition then i really don't know what to say.

It aint ridiculous at all. Khan nor his team want any part of Marcos Maidana. It's been said countless times by Freddie Roach. Why ? Roach amitted its a high risk fight. That is evident ducking.

Yeah he stopped Casamayor and Diaz but at 135 and he was going life and death with them, so you think he's going to do really well at 140?
Yeah he's fighting a top 5 p4p guy but at what weight? Why it's above his comfort zone where he looked like crap! Khan and Roach are hoping that JMM is another shot blownup featherweight like Barrera. Of course something like this will make Khan look good with the ignorant masses that say, "Why look at Khan he easily beats a guy that went life and death with Pacquiao and is ranked 5th p4p currently, this guy is awesome! He's about to be a legend! First he beats 1 legend in Barerra and now JMM. What a fighter!"
And seriously stop using the "He's only 23 excuse."
You Khan fanboys only have 2 excuses when someone calls him out to be a fraud. "He's only 23" and sadly the race card if anyone dares criticize him.

In all fairness, if Khan is a fraud, he's at a stage in he's career where he's going to get found out very soon either way.

Great thread so far, some valid points either side.
Bulldog answer me this please; what qualifies Khan, or any other boxer, a fraud as you so kindly put it ? he's only 23 ( not an excuse just fact ) and not really had a chance to be proved a fraud surely  ;D
Re: Who Would You Most Want To See Khan Fight Next??
I'm with Ono on this one 100%, everyones unfounded hatred towards Khan is clouding their view.
Marquez is a bigger name, a bigger draw and twice the fighter Maidana is yet Khan is a fraud for fighting him intstead? FFS give the kid his dues? He's 23 and fighting a top 5 PFP future HoF'er

He's fighting him at 140 if it happens which is the weight class Khan only moved up to to get a title shot. I'm not getting why you think JMM is shot. You're jumping the gun a little. He's still ranked in the top 5 p4p so unless your world boxing knowledge outweighs that of the many boxing experts and the majority of the posters on here (believe me, it doesn't), then i think you need to stop with the Barrera comparisons. Barrera was last seen fighting in gymnasiums before the Khan fight. Marquez was last seen sharing the ring with possibly the greatest fighter of a generation.
His age isn't an excuse. It's a fact. He's only recently turned 23 so hating on his career is a little silly when it's very debatable that there is another prospect with a better resume.
What you're failing to realise, is that Boxing is a sport that is aimed at the ignorant masses. Mismatched ppv's, mismatched mandatory title defences. Roy Jones made a career out of it.
Whether or not it all fits in with your "Rocky" ideology is irrelevent. Khan, along with the vast majority of all the other fighters in the world, will opt to take on the bigger named, lesser risk fight for much more money.
I'm also not a 'Khan Fanboy' nor am i a fan boy of any particular fighter. I just don't have irrational hate for him like a few people on here.

Alexander's resume is shit, he's got Witter & that's it (& truthfully Witter ain't much better than Kotelnik). Even if he beats Urango, I'd say Khan still has one that is debatably better. I think Alexander is the guy who really gets over-rated in the light-welterweight divisions.
Gonzalez maybe & Kameda certainly have better resumes in my opinion.

At least Haye gets shit for his cockiness, Froch & Hatton seem to get anything they say swept under the carpet (although since becoming World Champ, many seem to have taken Haye's arrogance as 'charm'). At least in Froch's case you might argue that no one knows who he is, but old witch-nose is probably the most arrogant fighter from these shores I can remember relative to his skill-set. Well, apart from Anthony Small :-X
Re: Who Would You Most Want To See Khan Fight Next??
It's crazy to me to think people would actually rather see Khan fight the very raw Maidana rather then Marquez, actually it blows my mind. And if Khan doesn't deserve a shot at JMM, who does? I mean fuck didn't Rocky Juarez fight Marquez, were people outraged then?
Re: Who Would You Most Want To See Khan Fight Next??
I'd like to see Amir Khan fight Devon Alexander or Timothy Bradley, as someone said in another thread. Amir Khan hasn't earnt his shot against JMM. And i sense something fishy about the fight aswell, like Freddie Roach knows JMM won't be effective at 140.
Of course Amir Khan still would deserve credit for the win, but Freddie Roach is a smart man. And IMO JMM looked to be pushing his luck at 135, and the fact he won actually shows how good he is. Because he clearly wasn't at his best at 135.
I don't think JMM has the frame to move up like Manny Pacquiao, he looked pretty fleshy vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. And at 140 being 37 it just seems to be all against JMM, plus all the advantages Amir Khan holds. Like being naturally alot bigger. And having a big reach advantage.
I'd rather see Amir Khan take on a legit 140 pounder, someone like Devon Alexander or Timothy Bradley, there title holders and as i said they would be good fights. Or even Marcos Rene Maidana just because he's a puncher, or what about a rematch vs Breidis Prescott ?
