Re: Do people REALLY do this?
I've done it plenty of times. When Lampley went on his little cocaine moment BANG BANG BANG. I said yeah that's enough of him. Usually I will watch it the night of with the commentating and sometimes the next morning if the commentating is horrible I will watch it without.

I can't imagine getting any enjoyment whatsoever out of watching a fight in absolute silence.
And even if you did watch it that way, how do you really think it makes it more accurate to totally switch off one of your main senses?
It's lunacy imo, turn off the sound and you lose 50% of the information available to you, I'm not talking about the commentators, but the sound of the punches, the atmosphere and feelings of the boxers.
If your ears pop you suddenly feel detached from the world, like it's less real. How can watching a fight in silence bring you closer to the purity of the action?
It's fuking ridiculous, and I bet nobody actually does it. Sitting in silence watching a fight in mute, come on really, nobody does that ;D
For big fights, of course not, because more than likely i'm with friends at a bar or their house watching the fight.
Yes for most fights that are in the English language I watch with the sound off if I'm alone. So I don't have to hear shit biased clueless commentary that ruins a good fight. It's one of my pet peeves.
Take for example this fight.YouTube - Bernard Dunne V Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym Part 1
You would have thought Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym was cheating and that there was a Muhammad Ali phantom punch by the way the idiot commentators were going on about.:vd:
And Jim Lampley's bang bang bang is another example. It's a pet peeve for some people like me. Some people may like the commentary, others don't. It's call personal preference and choice. Nothing wrong with it.
Re: Do people REALLY do this?
I do it sometimes after the original airing. I'd never turn the volume down to watch a PPV that's for sure.

That makes sense.
Kinda like trying to read a book with the radio on. One more reason I hate road trips.

Never done it and wont either, sometimes makes me laugh when the comentator is so bias, often happens quite often on sky lol so iam used to it.
Re: Do people REALLY do this?
Ok as it seems some people insist they do actually do this, I'm still baffled.
WHY do you do it? ;D
I mean, it can't be for entertainment right? I mean sitting watching anything in silence is no fun at all, just the atmosphere is all gone.
So I'm guessing you are doing it in order to study a fight round by round to come to an accurate assessment of what happened. But again, WHY? :D
I mean who cares, it's just entertainment, why do you need to go over it like it's some serious scientific analysis. Who are you trying to convince? I mean do you think if you are arguing on here about a decision, that somehow studying a fight in this manner gives you more credibility when you tell your verdict?
Or do you just need to know from a personal perspective that you have studied the fight in the most intimate detail and so your score is completely accurate?
Of course, it wouldn't be accurate anyway, as the whole point of judging a fight is that the judging is done live whilst watching and listening to the fight (I know the judged can't hear the commentary team). Judges, or the commentators don't get a chance for a second viewing in hindsight when making their decisions, so how is it fair that you statto's do?
You should make your decision on the night, live like the judges have to do, because that is how a fight is scored.
Anyway, that's just my two cents :p

Because it's a personal preference for some people.
I don't like to listen to shit commentary because it's annoying to me for the most part. And who cares what one person likes to do.
You do your own thing another man does his. What works for you doesn't work for another man.

Watching a fight on TV or in person lends itself to bias. On TV you're only seeing what they put on camera. A punch might not look solid from one angle, but from another it all but decapitates his opponent. And you can only see a fight from your side if you watch in person. That's why refs can have 3 different score cards.
So turning off the sound relinquishes you from one bias, but throws you right back into another.
Would you have had a better or poorer impression of the punch that turned Chris Byrd semi-retarded after Ibeabuchi smacked him in the head. Or after Roy Jones broke Virgil Hill's ribs.
Everything is bias. Live with your version.
Re: Do people REALLY do this?
Not me i love shouting out "WHAT FUCKING FIGHT ARE YOU WATCHING" at the telly...
The only thing i watch with the sound off is porn ;D

Re: Do people REALLY do this?
You've changed a mind here today, Bilbo. Never again will I rewatch a fight with the sound down to get some kind of "edge" in fair scoring.
I'm not bullshittin' you. I'm a convert.

You will come to know the truth Fenster ;)
Re: Do people REALLY do this?
I had the haye v Ruiz fight on a live stream and it was in German (i think);D
Put on 5 live radio and it was 20 seconds behind what we were watching.
Really fucked our heads up if im honest ;D
Re: Do people REALLY do this?
No I lose interest. I tried it when I was told Morales won the 1st Barrera fight but made no difference and I got fed up of the silence pretty quick. Wont do it again.
