Re: How many fights does Cortez have to clearly mess up on for him to get fired?
why does there need to be blame? blame for what? the only illegal thing that happened was the deliberate head butt. everything else was legit. so why are we trying to blame anyone for anything.
ortiz was the only one at fault when he headbutted floyd. he was penalized 1 point as punishment. then the fight restarted. for some strange reason instead of walking forward with his hands up ready to trade blows ortiz walked forward and tried to hug mayweather. strange tactic in boxing match...but who am i to judge? then mayweather dropped him.
i don't even see what cortez has to do with any of this. he separated the fighters deducted the point. walked ortiz to the corner and said "Whats the matter with you, man? Don't be doing that. Don't be doing that!" and told them to resume fighting. cortez did so by swinging his arms together in unison, whilst backing out of from between them and can clearly be heard say the words "Lets go." Cortez then looks to the time keeper to confirm that the clock has started. all the while ortiz is trying to make out with mayweather. you know the rest...
why are you trying to blame cortez for ortiz' unorthodox strategy of fighting with his hands down?
there's no need to blame anyone for anything cause nothing happened.
Re: How many fights does Cortez have to clearly mess up on for him to get fired?
If he didn't call "Fight" then Mayweather should be disqualified and charged with assault!
If he did call "Fight" then Cortez should be fired for not watching the match he's reffing!
Simples!
Re: How many fights does Cortez have to clearly mess up on for him to get fired?
wrong. Cortez doesnt have to watch the fight every split second. Refs do plenty of other shit. Pick up mouthpieces, look for spilt water on the canvass, ask cornermen to wipe up water, look at the ring doctor, look at the judges, check the timekeeper, warn cornermen for too vocal coaching, etc.

He should have held up a banner that said "CONTINUE FIGHTING" instead of just saying it verbally. He should have leaped in the middle of Floyd's one-two and taken the punishment instead of the clueless Ortiz. The headbutt by Ortiz was Cortes's fault also. He should have seen the headbutts coming, and pushed Ortiz away or something. Hell.... in the dressing room, before the fight, Cortes should have said to Ortiz: "Hey listen... no blatant headbutts in there, or I'll have to deduct points away from you and maybe disqualify you. But if you DO headbutt... don't go kissing and hugging after I've told you to continue. You're liable to get clocked." That damn Cortes. He should be fired (like Merchant)."
It's so "in" to blame Cortes for everything.
;)
bro you're just blinded by the flag if you actually think that Joe did a good job on Saturday night, IMO the fight was no different than the Humberto Soto DQ, if he said BOX well he's supposed to be watching the action and not staring off at God know's what, it's not like it's the first fight he's fucked up
No flag here, bro. I could care less if Cortes was Japanese, Greek, Armenian, or from any other country. I'm just going by what he did RIGHT. He was quick to deduct a point from Ortiz. A warning just wasn't going to do. He signaled the fighters to continue. Why did he look to the side while Mayweather landed his haymakers? Who knows? I'm not letting idiot Ortiz off the hook THAT easy. It's too easy to dump on Cortes nowadays. But Ortiz was the one in there with the gloves on. He had been instructed to carry on, but yet chose to continue the smooch-fest with Floyd. Even when he gets tagged with the left hook, he's stupid enough to keep his hands down and look over at Cortes, like some kid waiting for the teacher to scold the bully. So Floyd knocked his ass out. They were legal shots... and everybody says so. Could Cortes have taken control of the situation a little better and maybe have been more assertive? Sure. Hindsight is 20/20. With instant replays, we're ALL geniuses.
So Ortiz getting KTFO'ed is nobody's fault but his own. To top it off... he didn't seem to be that broken up about it. (HE didn't blame the ref). He just said "It was fun." Go figure.
i disagree, i say all 3 are to blame, Mayweather (although it was a legal shot) should have had a bit more honor and desire to win cleanly, Ortiz for blatantly fouling then trying to make up for it by acting like a clown, and Cortes for wandering around and not taking full control of the situation, i can guarantee you that that shit wouldn't of happened if the ref was Kenny Bayless
Cortes has fucked up too many times and it's just getting to the point that you even cringe whenever you see he's taking part of a big fight (and that's exactly how i felt from the get go), that's exactly why i said that in a perfect world all 3 should get their paychecks pulled and given to the participants of the Morales/Cano fight seeing how they were more deserving of that type of money and displayed what boxing should be, two men willing to put it all on the line and try to out do the other not only with speed and strength but also skill and will and doing so with honor and class, end of rant
You may have seen a couple of posts down the line (ruthless rocco, brocktonblockbust) with arguments against the shit Cortes is getting, so I won't repeat their points. Very good points all, I might add. MY point is... and I hope you accept this with an open mind... you're already biased against Cortes. You even said so yourself. You "cringe" when he's announced for a big fight. So you're already looking for something to pin on the guy.
Granted, I've never said Cortes is the best boxing ref around. Not by any means. But he DOES do things right occasionally. You need to be objective about this. Like one of the posters said... he DID deduct a point right away... he DID admonish Ortiz about his behavior... he DID signal the boxers to continue fighting. Where's the blame here? Maybe he did look to the side to motion the timekeeper to make sure the clock was running. In that split second, Mayweather took advantage. But the fight had already RESUMED. Is it Cortes's fault Ortiz wanted to kiss and make up yet AGAIN? Remember, this is a boxing match, not a kindergarten recess. Ortiz blatantly fouled, then acted like a love-struck idiot in trying to make up with Mayweather a SECOND time.
Point is... even when you hate a ref (or a fighter)... you should be willing to give credit where credit is due, and not be looking for the first thing you can dump on the guy.
