The only person who needed to be 'protected' was Ortiz. At ALL times.

Lucian bute.. He needs to be stripped. It's ludacrious.

I don't think you can call a fighter protected when he's faced Sakio Bika, Librado Andrade, and Glen Johnson. None of those guys are a walk in the park.

They are for a supposed top tier world champion! Andrade was an ok contender who had already had his ass handed to him by Kessler. Bika is another perrienal challenger, already beaten by Calzaghe, and has always lost when he's stepped up to the top level.
Johnson, he hasn't fought yet, but again he's a relatively low risk guy coming off a staggering 5 failed world title attempts in a row.
Considering Bute was the Ring champion at 168 before the Super Six got past the knockout stage his record looks about the same as Felix Sturm's.
Basically he's been fighting guys the other guys in the division have already beat up. You can add Miranda and Magee to that list too.
Now, the Super Six tying up many of he best opponents has clearly affected him, and it may be lack of options rather than being over protected, but his resume isn't great. It's about the same as Jeff Lacy's was prior to fighting Calzaghe.

And it's better than Ward's was prior to the Super Six...

The difference though with what I'm saying is that Bute faced Andrade, Bika and will be facing Johnson. All of whom are perenial top ten fighters at 168. Because he's faced every single person worth fighting outside the S6, I don't think you can say he is being protected. I'll put it this way. What available opponent that Bute hasn't fought do you wish he had fought? For people like Sturm, Chavez Jr., and Chris John, there's at least three or four fighters for each that they haven't faced, but should have.

For a guy who's been a so called champion for nearly 4 years, his resume is a joke and it's not acceptable..
HIs fans would defend his lack of competition by bring up the Super6 but the fact is, he won his title at the end of 07 and the super6 started nearly 2 years later so what was he doing for those 2 years when many top fighters were available? You mean to tell me that he had no choice but to face mandatories for all those years? that's some bullshit.. Lucian Bute is a classic example of a pampered hometown fighter who fights overmatched opponents in his backyard.. He has huge fanbase in canada and sells alot of tickets so he's content on making big bucks in his backyward against nobodies..
So he beat Sakio Bika and Andrade.... and??? they are C level fighters and when you're a champion, you should be fighting guys who are alot better than that..
Lucian Bute has not beaten ONE elite fighter and that's ridiculous.. Might as well throw away that belt..
He's the epitome of a paper champion.. Im not saying that he's not a good fighter because he obviously is.. I like his style but the dude needs to fight someone already.. This bum tour must come to and end...
Glenn Johnson?? OK i guess that's slighter better than the bikas and the Joppys but c'mon.... We all know Johnson is coming in as another handpicked opponent.. It's a gimmie fight..
Just wake me up when Bute gets into an evenly matched up bout..

Humberto Soto - I even like the guy, but it seems he hasn't fought a top name as long as i can remember..
His biggest named opponents:
Antillon - Close bout, but still there is better fights out there...
David Diaz - Nothing to write home about
Joan Guzman - This was back in 2007

Bute was never the Ring Champion!

Does Zsolt Erdei still have a cruiserweight title or did he retire or lose ???
